Social Determinants of Health in Trauma.

Social determinants (SD) refer to a variety of environmental factors that can influence certain clinical outcomes. SD that affect clinical outcomes in trauma patients are largely understudied. We hypothesized that patients with an "at risk" (AR) classification for any SD will have a greater frequency of negative outcomes when compared to their "not at risk" (NAR) counterparts. A retrospective review was performed (1/2021-2/2022) of all trauma patients that met the inclusion criteria. 2225 patients were included. SD included (based on collection rates) for analysis were: tobacco use, stress, an

Determinants of MSK health and disability--social determinants of inequities in MSK health.

Even in most egalitarian societies, disparities in care exist to the disadvantage of some people with chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders and related disability. These situations translate into inequality in health and health outcomes. The goal of this chapter is to review concepts and determinants associated with health inequity, and the effect of interventions to minimize their impact. Health inequities are avoidable, unnecessary, unfair and unjust. Inequities can occur across the health care continuum, from primary and secondary prevention to diagnosis and treatment. There are many ways

Social determinants of health in multiple sclerosis.

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances are the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. Evidence indicates that health behaviours, comorbidities and disease-modifying therapies all contribute to multiple sclerosis (MS) outcomes; however, our knowledge of the effects of social determinants - that is, the 'risks of risks' - on health has not yet changed our approach to MS. Assessing and addressing social determinants of health could fundamentally improve health and health care in MS; this approach has al

Social Determinants of Health, Diabetes, and Pregnancy.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) or non-medical social needs are the conditions in which individuals are born, grow, work, live, and age. SDOH can explain, perpetuate, and exacerbate disparities in health outcomes and can be measured at both individual and neighborhood levels. Increasing evidence in pregnancy demonstrate that SDOH are associated with diabetes, glycemic management, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Further research is needed to characterize the relationships between SDOH and pregnancy outcomes with diabetes, and to determine whether interventions that mitigate adverse SDOH ca

Menopause and the Social Determinants of Health.

This clinical perspective examines how social determinants of health (SDoH) such as economic stability, education and health literacy, health care access and quality, and social and community contexts shape menopause experiences and outcomes through a health equity lens. Menopause is not experienced uniformly: Black, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+) individuals and those with low income often face earlier symptom onset, greater symptom burden, and reduced access to evidence-based care due to structural inequities, economic barriers, and cultural stigma. Menop

Social Determinants of Health and Preoperative Care.

Preoperative care exists as part of perioperative continuum during which anesthesiologists and surgeons optimize patients for surgery. These multispecialty efforts are important, particularly for patients with complex medical histories and those requiring major surgery. Preoperative care improves planning and determines the clinical pathway and discharge disposition. The role of nonmedical social factors in the preoperative planning is not well described in anesthesiology. Research to improve outcomes based on social factors is not well described for anesthesiologists but could be instrumental

Social Determinants of Health: Housing and Income.

Social determinants of health such as housing and income have a large impact on mental health. Community-based initiatives have worked to address access to housing, prevent homelessness and assist people who are homeless with mental health problems. There have been several large research projects to tease out multiple subgroups such as youth and veterans and other individuals experiencing long-term homelessness. The issue of poverty has been addressed by exploring issues related to employment. The use of social enterprises is a promising practice to address issues around poverty, social inclus

Comprehensive social determinants of health and brain health in midlife.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are increasingly recognized as important drivers of cognitive outcomes. However, most existing evidence focuses on individual SDOH components and older populations. OBJECTIVES: To develop a comprehensive SDOH index and examine its association with subsequent changes in cognitive function and structural brain measures in midlife. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study with repeated measures of cognition and brain imaging. SETTING: Community-based cohort from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. PARTICIPANTS: A total

Social Determinants of Health and Early Brain Development.

In this article, we review recent research linking prenatal Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) to fetal and neonatal brain development, highlighting their deleterious impact on neurodevelopmental outcomes and the need for early interventions. We summarize (1) the role of social risk factors in prenatal SDoH related to very preterm birth, (2) links between prenatal SDoH risk factors and neonatal brain structure and function, and (3) the multiple mechanisms postulated to underlie these links. Finally, we discuss promising randomized control trials that directly modify SDoH risk factors and mak

Social Determinants of Health and Injury Among Children.

IMPORTANCE: Pediatric physical injuries have lasting effects on child mental and physical health and social outcomes. Little is known about social determinants that increase the odds of injury in children. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between 14 social determinants of child health (SDoCH) and odds of pediatric injury. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Population-based retrospective case-control study in Winnipeg, Canada. Cases (children aged ≤17 years admitted to the hospital from 2002 to 2019 with physical injuries) were linked to their mothers using a unique identifier and matche

Social Determinants of Health and Diabetes in Pregnancy.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age. SDOH are systemic factors that may explain, perpetuate, and exacerbate disparities in health outcomes for different populations and can be measured at both an individual and neighborhood or community level (iSDOH, nSDOH). In pregnancy, increasing evidence shows that adverse iSDOH and/or nSDOH are associated with a greater likelihood that diabetes develops, and that when it develops, there is worse glycemic control and a greater frequency of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Social Determinants of Health in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) disproportionately affects women from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, but specific social determinants of health have not been examined. METHODS: We used data from the National Institutes of Health's All of Us Research Program, an ongoing nationwide study of more than 300,000 diverse individuals in the United States. Height and weight were measured at baseline, and participants completed questionnaires about demographics, health care access, and quality of life. Women aged 18-50 years with IIH were identified through electron

Social Determinants of Health and Hirschsprung-associated Enterocolitis.

BACKGROUND: Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with Hirschsprung disease (HD). The objective of this study was to examine the association of social determinants of health (SDOH) with HAEC. METHODS: A review of patients who underwent primary pull through for HD at our institution from 2014 to 2021 was performed. Clinical, surgical, and SDOH data were collected. HAEC was defined by an international scoring system. Categorical variables were analyzed via Fisher's exact tests and continuous variables with Mood's median test

Assessing social determinants of health competencies among nurses.

BACKGROUND: Multiple national nursing organizations have advocated for improving health professionals' understanding of social determinants of health (SDOH) to enhance healthcare access, quality, and outcomes. PURPOSE: This project developed a self-assessment questionnaire to evaluate nursing professionals' self-perceptions of competencies in addressing SDOH, as few tools exist to measure this. METHODS: A total of 690 nurses completed the 23-item questionnaire. FINDINGS: In total, 690 nurses answered the SDOH self-assessment questionnaire. Cronbach's Alpha was 0.99. Nurses reported the high

Evidence Review-Social Determinants of Health for Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is committed to providing high-quality care and addressing health disparities for vulnerable Veterans. To meet these goals, VA policymakers need guidance on how to address social determinants in operations planning and day-to-day clinical care for Veterans. METHOD: MEDLINE (OVID), CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Sociological Abstracts were searched from inception to January 2017. Additional articles were suggested by peer reviewers and/or found through search of work associated with US and VA cohorts. Eligible articles compared Veterans vs non-Veterans,

Social Determinants of Health and Health Confidence: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Research shows low health confidence predicts poor involvement in self-care and is associated with increased use of costly healthcare services. To improve overall health and reduce health inequities, the relevance and urgency of identifying the relationship between social determinants of health and health confidence are great. OBJECTIVE: This study explored relationships between social determinants of health and health confidence in adults at an urgent care center in southern California. METHODS: The descriptive cross-sectional study collected data via survey from 240 English-

Social determinants of methadone in pregnancy: violence, social capital, and mental health.

Mothering and methadone can occur together with the right resources and support. Methadone mothers need to be seen in the context of their social risks and environment. Societal attitudes, social capital, and other contextual variables can be changed through policy. The purpose of this article is to describe the contextual risks experienced by drug abusing mothers in order to direct further research and policy changes that protect their children. Research has focused on biological or genetic determinants, but now social risks and environmental factors are shaping current literature about subst

Social aspects of chronic transfusions: addressing social determinants of health, health literacy, and quality of life.

Chronic monthly transfusions are a lifesaving preventative therapy for many patients with sickle cell disease; however, the burden of this therapy for patients and families is high. In the United States, there is overlap in the population affected by sickle cell disease and those with the greatest burden of social needs. Hematology providers caring for patients with SCD have an opportunity to screen for and mitigate social determinants of health, especially in those receiving chronic transfusion therapy given the frequent interactions with the healthcare system and increased demand on already
