An experiment on the social facilitation of gambling behavior.

Research and theory regarding the social facilitation effect generates the expectation that the presence of other gamblers (or co-actors) in a gaming venue is likely to intensify individual gambling behavior and magnify losses. Fifty male and 66 female participants (116 total) played a computer-simulated electronic gaming machine with a fixed winning sequence, followed by an indefinite losing sequence. Measures of the intensity of gambling behavior included the final payout (a direct measure of losses), average bet-size, number of trials played, and the speed of play. Some participants receive

Social Presence and Social Facilitation in Gambling: Some Comments on Yokomitsu et al. (2022).

This brief commentary adds to the recent study by paper by Yokomitsu, Kono and Takada (2022). Their study examined social presence in gambling by experimentally investigating the effects of the presence of other people on risky betting among high-risk gamblers. This commentary argues that the paper by Yokomitsu et al. provided a highly selective review on available studies and omitted many of the key studies in the area of social presence and social facilitation in which their findings could have been compared. The commentary also briefly outlines a number of studies that have I co-authored in

Virtual and live social facilitation while exergaming: competitiveness moderates exercise intensity.

Grounded in social facilitation theory, this study compared the impact on exercise intensity of a virtual versus a live competitor, when riding a virtual reality-enhanced stationary bike ("cybercycle"). It was hypothesized that competitiveness would moderate effects. Twenty-three female college students were exposed to three conditions on a cybercycle: solo training, virtual competitor, and live competitor. After training without a competitor (solo condition for familiarization with equipment), participants competed against a virtual avatar or live rider (random order of presentation). A repea

Conditioned food aversions: principles and practices, with special reference to social facilitation.

Conditioned food aversion is a powerful experimental tool to modify animal diets. We have also investigated it as a potential management tool to prevent livestock from grazing poisonous plants such as tall larkspur (Delphinium barbeyi), white locoweed (Oxytropis sericea) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) on western US rangelands. The following principles pertain to increasing the strength and longevity of aversions: mature animals retain aversions better than young animals; novelty of the plant is important, although aversions can be created to familiar plants; LiCl is the most effective em

Facilitators and barriers to neighborhood social integration.

Social isolation has reached concerning rates, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social integration is critical to combatting social isolation and loneliness by promoting a sense of community and belonging. Yet, most existing research centers on fostering close personal relationships within family and friend networks. Social integration within the neighborhood context (e.g., chatting with neighbors, participating in local organizations) is another tool that can be used to combat loneliness, but less is known about the process of social integration for residents situated in dif

Facilitation of biological motion processing by group-based autism specific social skills training.

Abnormalities in neurophysiological correlates of social perception are a well-known feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known if and how ASD specific behavioral interventions may affect neural processing in ASD. The aim of the current study was to investigate for the first time, whether the group-based social skills training SOSTA-FRA would elicit changes in neurophysiological correlates of social perception in high-functioning ASD individuals aged 8-17 years. Event-related potentials (ERPs) of a facial emotion recognition (FER) and a biological motion perception tas

Adolescent wellness. Facilitating compliance in social morbidities.

The establishment of a well adolescent schedule needs to be developed similar to the scheduled clinical visits in pediatric care. However, providing adolescent wellness visits without appropriate financial reimbursement for time expended and without increased provider training may make "well" adolescent visits an unrealistic expectation. However, two major trends will significantly impact on the future of adolescent health care. These include a sharp increase in numbers of adolescents beginning in 1990 and the poverty within the adolescent population. These data suggest that obstacles, whether

Stereotypes as dominant responses: on the "social facilitation" of prejudice in anticipated public contexts.

This article challenges the highly intuitive assumption that prejudice should be less likely in public compared with private settings. It proposes that stereotypes may be conceptualized as a type of dominant response (C. L. Hull, 1943; R. B. Zajonc, 1965) whose expression may be enhanced in public settings, especially among individuals high in social anxiety. Support was found for this framework in an impression formation paradigm (Experiment 1) and in a speeded task designed to measure stereotypic errors in perceptual identification (Experiment 2). Use of the process dissociation procedure (B

Reappraisal facilitates extinction in healthy and socially anxious individuals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) combines cognitive restructuring with exposure to feared stimuli in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Due to the complexities of cognition–emotion interactions during ongoing CBT, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, which hinders treatment optimization. METHODS: We created a laboratory analogue by combining reappraisal, a key ingredient of cognitive restructuring, with Pavlovian conditioning, a key ingredient in behavioral treatments. The novel differential Pavlovian acquisition and extinction task featured social stimuli a

Social psychological analysis of facilitated communication: implications for education.

Despite lack of empirical support, facilitated communication was rapidly adopted and used with individuals who have severe communication disorders. An overview of the psychological literature was provided here to support theoretical explanations for this rapid adoption. The literature suggests that cognitive biases, ambiguous stimuli, and biases in data may be associated with a tendency to adopt interventions such as facilitated communication. Psychosocial influences associated with autism, the helping relationship, and the professional career cycle may enhance a readiness to adopt alternative

Artificial intelligence-enabled social robots for facilitating social interactions in patients with dementia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The global rise in dementia, closely linked to aging populations, necessitates innovative interventions to address care challenges. Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Social Robots (AI-ESRs) present a promising approach by leveraging multi-modal communication to enhance social engagement and alleviate isolation. However, evidence regarding their efficacy remains inconsistent and fragmented. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of AI-ESRs in enhancing social interactions among people with dementia, examines factors contributing to outcome variability, and provides recomme

MDMA alters emotional processing and facilitates positive social interaction.

BACKGROUND: ±3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy") produces "prosocial" effects, such as feelings of empathy and closeness, thought to be important to its abuse and its value in psychotherapy. However, it is not fully understood how MDMA alters basic emotional processes to produce these effects, or whether it produces corresponding changes in actual social behavior. Here, we examined how MDMA affects perceptions of and responses to emotional expressions, and tested its effects on behavior during a social interaction. We also examined whether MDMA's prosocial effects related to a

Facilitating a benign interpretation bias in a high socially anxious population.

Previous research has shown that high socially anxious individuals lack the benign interpretation bias present in people without social anxiety. The tendency of high socially anxious people to generate more negative interpretations may lead to anticipated anxiety about future social situations. If so, developing a more benign interpretation bias could lead to a reduction in this anxiety. The current study showed that a benign interpretation bias could be facilitated (or 'trained') in a high socially anxious population. Participants in the benign training groups had repeated practice in accessi

Social isolation stress facilitates chemically induced oral carcinogenesis.

Social isolation has affected a large number of people and may lead to impairment of physical and mental health. Although stress resulting from social isolation may increase cancer progression, its interference on tumorigenesis is poorly known. In this study, we used a preclinical model to evaluate the effects of social isolation stress on chemically induced oral carcinogenesis. Sixty-two 21-day-old male Wistar rats were divided into isolated and grouped groups. After 90 days of age, the rats from both groups underwent oral carcinogenesis with 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) for 20 weeks. All

Using telemedicine to facilitate social distancing in otolaryngology: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: As the coronavirus 2019 pandemic puts strains on current models of otolaryngology practice, telemedicine is an attractive way for otolaryngologists to reduce in-person appointments while still addressing the health of their patients. This systematic review of the literature aims to identify the evidence basis for using telemedicine in otolaryngology practice to limit person-to-person interactions while achieving comparable quality to in-person services. METHODS: The authors gathered articles from three databases (Embase, PubMed and Web of Science), performed a comprehensive litera

Fostering the Facilitator: Promoting Clinical Educators' Interprofessional Education Facilitation Skills and Socialization Using Exclusively Online Learning.

Health professions educators can benefit from continuing education to more effectively facilitate interprofessional education (IPE) in clinical settings. Online learning formats enable broader participation and overcome barriers to in-person events, though few studies describe the most effective platforms and methods of online continuing education for this purpose. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed a 6-week interactive online program implemented via an integrated online educational platform (OEP) to equip participants with knowledge and skills to better facilitate IPE in cl

"I didn't know what I could do": Behaviors, knowledge and beliefs, and social facilitation after distal radius fracture.

BACKGROUND: Biomedical models have limitations in explaining and predicting recovery after distal radius fracture (DRF). Variation in recovery after DRF may be related to patients' behaviors and beliefs, factors that can be framed using a lens of self-management. We conceptualized the self-management process using social cognitive theory as reciprocal interactions between behaviors, knowledge and beliefs, and social facilitation. Understanding this process can contribute to needs identification to optimize recovery. PURPOSE: Describe the components of the self-management process after DRF fro
