A primer in genomics for social and behavioral investigators.

Genomics is being increasingly utilized in medical research and health care. Countless opportunities exist for social and behavioral scientists to answer novel and important research questions. Evidence that will be produced from such enquiries can help ensure appropriate use of genomic information and realize the potential of genomics to improve patient care and medical outcomes. Here, we provide an accessible overview of different types of genetic and genomic tests and the resulting information produced. There are important nuances that distinguish genetic from genomic tests and different in

Genome Evolution in Social Insects.

Sociality is a complex phenotype which has evolved multiple times across the tree of life, particularly in the insects. Insect sociality likely arises via the evolution of the genome, with changes in specific genes, gene families, and gene regulatory mechanisms linked to social traits. In turn, sociality itself can influence patterns of genome evolution through the effects of smaller effective population sizes, longer generation times, and reproductive division of labor. Moreover, particular social insect lineages have some noteworthy genome features which may influence both trait and genome e

Cognitive genomics of learning delay and low level of social performance monitoring in macaque.

Cognitive skills and the underlying neural architecture are under the influence of genetics. Cognitive genomics research explores the triadic relationship between genes, brain, and cognition, with its major strategy being genotype-driven. Here we show that an inverse strategy is feasible to identify novel candidate genes for particular neuro-cognitive phenotypes in macaques. Two monkeys, originally involved in separate psychological studies, exhibited learning delay and low levels of social performance monitoring. In one monkey, mirror neurons were fewer compared to controls and mu suppression

Genomics and social practices at Mogou and other Gansu sites during prehistoric trans-Eurasian exchange.

Beginning approximately 4,000 years ago, southwest-Asian-originating domesticated crops and livestock began appearing in Gansu, a key crossroads in northwestern China, yet the population dynamics and social practices underlying these historically transformative events in the region have not been fully explored. Despite the adoption of western domesticates, genome sequences of 149 individuals from the large Mogou cemetery and ten other sites in Gansu, dating between 4,700 and 3,000 years ago, revealed migrations within East Asian regions but no detectable evidence of genetic influence from west

Geographic and Social Equity in Population-Wide Genomic Screening.

IMPORTANCE: Genomic screening for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tier 1 conditions, ie, hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC), Lynch syndrome, and familial hypercholesterolemia, enables early detection of these rare, but highly penetrant disorders and supports timely, evidence-based interventions. However, states with large rural and socially disadvantaged populations, such as South Carolina, face substantial structural and access-related barriers that limit the reach of population-wide genomic screening (PWGS). OBJECTIVE: To examine whether combining implementation

Genome-wide analysis of social behaviour across social domains, reporters and developmental stages: a meta-regression approach.

Social behaviour is a heritable trait linked to well-being and mental health, yet it varies across social context, including social domains, informants and development, which may shape its underlying genomic architecture. Here, we conducted a genome-wide meta-regression meta-analysis of social behaviour from infancy to early adulthood, studying ~500,000 repeated measures in European-ancestry cohorts (N = 73,321). We modelled heterogeneity in single-variant associations across social domains (low prosocial behaviour and peer/social difficulties), multiple informants (parents, teachers and self-

Mom genes and dad genes: genomic imprinting in the regulation of social behaviors.

Genomic imprinting is an epigenetic phenomenon in mammals that affects brain development and behavior. Imprinting involves the regulation of allelic expression for some genes in offspring that depends on whether alleles are inherited from mothers compared to fathers, and is thought to provide parental control over offspring social behavior phenotypes. Imprinted gene expression is prevalent in the mammalian brain, and human imprinted gene mutations are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodivergent social behavior in Prader-Willi Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, and autism. Here, w

Genomic ancestry and social dynamics of the last hunter-gatherers of Atlantic France.

Since the early Holocene, western and central Europe was inhabited by a genetically distinct group of Western Hunter-Gatherers (WHGs). This group was eventually replaced and assimilated by the incoming Neolithic farmers. The western Atlantic façade was home to some of the last Mesolithic sites of mainland Europe, represented by the iconic open-air sites at Hoedic and Téviec in southern Brittany, France. These sites are known for the unusually well-preserved and rich burials. Genomic studies of Mesolithic European hunter-gatherers have been limited to single or a few individuals per site and ou

Update on autism spectrum disorder: vaccines, genomes, and social skills training.

Despite making significant progress in understanding autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its genetic underpinnings, controversy remains regarding ASD and its historical, erroneous association with vaccines. This controversy includes the latest anti-vaccine movement that caused a recurrence of the almost vanquished measles and mumps diseases. The history of ASD, complexities of research involving ASD genetics, and benefits of social skills training are explored.

Genomics, social media and mobile phone data enable mapping of SARS-CoV-2 lineages to inform health policy in Bangladesh.

Genomics, combined with population mobility data, used to map importation and spatial spread of SARS-CoV-2 in high-income countries has enabled the implementation of local control measures. Here, to track the spread of SARS-CoV-2 lineages in Bangladesh at the national level, we analysed outbreak trajectory and variant emergence using genomics, Facebook 'Data for Good' and data from three mobile phone operators. We sequenced the complete genomes of 67 SARS-CoV-2 samples (collected by the IEDCR in Bangladesh between March and July 2020) and combined these data with 324 publicly available Global

Rapid public health genomics capacity building during the COVID-19 Delta crisis driven by a transnational private, public, and social alliance.

When the COVID-19's Delta variant spread globally during late 2020, Public Health Genomics (PHG) capabilities were missing in several cities, significantly impairing the ability of policymakers and public health systems to rapidly identify COVID-19 variants and effectively respond, with tragic human and economic consequences. In this community case study, we retrospectively studied the dire situation during the Delta wave 5 years ago when we rapidly constituted a transnational public, private, and social, pro-bono alliance to establish PHG capabilities in Mumbai, a mega metropolis that lacked

Genomic signatures of divergent selection are associated with social behaviour for spinner dolphin ecotypes.

Understanding the genomic basis of adaptation is critical for understanding evolutionary processes and predicting how species will respond to environmental change. Spinner dolphins in the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) present a unique system for studying adaptation. Within this large geographical region are four spinner dolphin ecotypes with weak neutral genetic divergence and no obvious barriers to gene flow, but strong spatial variation in morphology, behaviour and habitat. These ecotypes have large population sizes, which could reduce the effects of drift and facilitate selection. To ident

Improving Cardiovascular Health Through the Consideration of Social Factors in Genetics and Genomics Research: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) is affected by genetic, social, and genomic factors across the life course, yet little research has focused on the interrelationships among them. An extensive body of work has documented the impact of social determinants of health at both the structural and individual levels on CVH, highlighting pathways in which racism, housing, violence, and neighborhood environments adversely affect CVH and contribute to disparities in cardiovascular disease. Genetic factors have also been identified as contributors to risk for cardiovascular disease. Emerging evidence suggests t

Expanded Newborn Screening and Genomic Sequencing in Latin America and the Resulting Social Justice and Ethical Considerations.

Newborn screening (NBS) has widely been utilized in developed countries as a cost-effective public health strategy that reduces morbidity and mortality. Developing countries, however, are new to the NBS scene and have their own unique challenges, both in instituting the program as well as effectively acting on the results. NBS offers numerous ethical issues on a global scale, however, here we argue that there are unique ethical issues surrounding the development and expansion of newborn screening in Latin America given its highly heterogenous population. Once a NBS program is effectively insta

Genome-wide association study of social isolation in 63,497 Japanese individuals from the general population.

Social isolation, characterized by a lack of social connections with family, friends, and others, is associated with adverse health outcomes. However, the genetic contribution to the susceptibility to social isolation remains unclear. This study aimed to identify genetic loci associated with social isolation using the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6) in a Japanese population. The Tohoku Medical Megabank Community-Based Cohort Study was conducted between 2013 and 2016. The participants were genotyped using the Affymetrix Axiom Japonica Array. The LSNS-6 was used to assess familial and frien

Ancestry-associated social and genomic hallmarks linked with inferior outcome in elderly acute myeloid leukemia.

Recent literature reports inferior outcomes for patients of African ancestry (AA) who develop acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We herein present a cohort of 396 patients with 116 patients of AA (29%) who show inferior survival outcomes for patients of African ancestry ≥ 60 years (p = 0.008). Our cohort also demonstrated significantly increased rates of monosomy 7 and 7q deletions in the patients of AA (p = 0.04, p = 0.03), suggesting association with genomic instability and loss of chromatin stabilization protein EZH2, DNA repair function mediated by CUX1, and SAMD9L anti-proliferation effect. A multidimensional social risk atlas of depression and anxiety: An observational and genome-wide environmental interaction study.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are largely socially determined, yet the combined impact of multidimensional social factors on the two most common mental disorders, depression and anxiety, remains unclear. METHODS: We constructed a polysocial risk score (PsRS), a multidimensional social risk indicator including components from three domains: socioeconomic status, neighborhood and living environment and psychosocial factors. Supported by the UK Biobank cohort, we randomly divided 110 332 participants into the discovery cohort (60%; n = 66 200) and the replication cohort (40%; n = 44 134). We test
