Social marginalization of overweight children.

BACKGROUND: Overweight is the most common health problem that faces children and adolescents. Although the correlation among overweight, low self-esteem, and depression is well known, social isolation among overweight children and adolescents has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To investigate social networks of overweight and normal-weight adolescents in a large, nationally representative sample. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, nationally representative cohort study. Population A total of 90 118 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years who were enrolled in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health,

Drug-abusing women in Sweden: marginalization, social exclusion and gender differences.

A quantitative epidemiological prevalence study of problem drug abuse in Sweden is the basis for a study of differences between drug abuse among men and women. A significant difference between genders was that, of those who come to the attention of the authorities, fewer women than men abuse drugs. The women were younger than the men. A greater percent of women abused amphetamines and injected heroin, as well as abusing tranquilizers/soporifics. A larger proportion of women than men were unemployed. The men had a significantly longer history of drug abuse than the women, a greater percent of t

Contested and neglected: Social and medical marginalization in severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

This study addresses the persistent invisibility of people with severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) in research by centering their voices and examining how social and institutional forces shape their lives. As a medically contested illness, ME/CFS-especially in its severe form-renders patients both physically incapacitated and socially invisible. Drawing on qualitative content analysis of 342 tweets under the hashtag #severeME, we identify how contested legitimacy, gendered stigma, and systemic marginalization structure the daily realities of 161 individuals with

[Oral Candida in Mexican children with malnutrition, social marginalization, or HIV/AIDS].

OBJECTIVE: Determine the frequency of candida in the oral cavity of children with a risk of developing opportunistic infections, and establish if there is an association between the frequency of this oral colonization and three categories of at-risk populations. METHODS: Four infant population groups in Mexico were studied: an HIV/AIDS group undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy (35 girls and 25 boys); a malnourished group (26 girls and 29 boys); a group from the Tarahumara indigenous people, one of the poorest ethnic populations in the country (37 girls and 20 boys); and a control

Police in the rearview mirror: Social marginalization, trauma, and fear of being killed.

An online sample of 528 people was asked to respond to a hypothetical scenario: If a police car came up right behind you with its lights flashing, how much would you worry that you would be killed? Participants also reported on whether they experienced aggressive behavior by police in the past (provoked or otherwise) and, if so, completed a measure of associated posttraumatic stress. At least some fear of being killed by police (FKP) in the rearview mirror scenario was reported by the majority (56%) of Black participants, 39% of those self-describing as "other or mixed" race, and 31% of Hispan

Health of Young Adults Experiencing Social Marginalization and Vulnerability: A Cross-National Longitudinal Study.

People who experience social marginalization and vulnerability have uniquely complex health needs and are at risk of poor health outcomes. Regression analyses using longitudinal data from a cross-national, population-based sample of young adults participating in the International Youth Development Study, tested associations between social marginalization and vulnerabilities and physical health, mental health, and substance use outcomes. Participants from Victoria, Australia, and Washington State in the US were surveyed at ages 25 (2014) and 29 years (2018; N = 1944; 46.7% male). A history of a

Mixed Methods for Research on Support Networks of People Experiencing Chronic Illness and Social Marginalization.

Substantial research has focused on how social networks help individuals navigate the illness experience. Sociologists have begun to theorize beyond the binary of strong and weak social network ties (e.g., compartmental, elastic, and disposable ties), citing the social, economic, and health conditions that shape their formation. However, limited research has employed mixed social network methods, which we argue is especially critical for examining the "non-traditional" social support networks of marginalized individuals. We employ quantitative social network methods (i.e., the egocentric netwo

RE-MAKING SELVES AND SOCIAL WORLDS: EXPERIENCES OF LIVE-IN SUBSTANCE USE TREATMENT AMONG ADOLESCENTS EXPERIENCING SOCIAL STRUCTURAL MARGINALIZATION IN VANCOUVER.

Across many settings in Canada and the US, overdose is now a leading cause of death among 10 to 18-year-olds. In the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC), there have been increased efforts to connect adolescents with substance use treatment, including live-in programs. While much previous work has focused on barriers to treatment among youth, less research has examined how adolescents, and in particular those experiencing high levels of residential instability, homelessness, and institutionalization via child protection, criminal legal and housing systems, understand and experience these

The role of social, economic, and medical marginalization in cancer clinical trial participation inequities: A systematic review.

Extant literature reveals how patients of marginalized social identities, socioeconomic status (SES), and medical experiences - especially patients of color and older adults - are underrepresented in cancer clinical trials (CCTs). Emerging evidence increasingly indicates CCT underrepresentation among patients of lower SES or rural origin, sexual and gender minorities, and patients with comorbid disability. This review applies an intersectional perspective to characterizing CCT representativeness across race and ethnicity, age, sexual and gender identity, SES, and disability. Four databases wer

Social marginalization and access to publicly funded home care in Ontario: a population-based retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults experiencing social marginalization may face inequitable access to publicly funded home care services. In Ontario, Canada, the Ontario Marginalization Index (ON-Marg) provides a multidimensional measure of area-level marginalization. This study examined whether ON-Marg dimensions were associated with access to publicly funded home care among community-dwelling adults aged 75 years and older. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using linked administrative health data from Ontario, Canada, for the year 2019. The cohort included individual

Finding Max's wolves: Literacy socialization in the margins.

For decades, language and literacy scholars working within a sociocultural framework have laboured to bring attention to the strengths of marginalized students in an effort to create more inclusive and equitable learning environments (e.g., Cummins, 2000; Dyson, 1997; González et al., 2005; Heath, 1983). While this work has moved the field forward in invaluable ways, it has not consistently engaged with processes of marginalization as a complex practice, which has produced gaps in our understanding of how we can best address it in research and practice to the benefit of all learners. Marginalization and social change processes among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in Swaziland: implications for HIV prevention.

Swaziland has among the highest national adult HIV prevalence globally. There is limited knowledge of HIV vulnerabilities and prevention engagement among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons in the context of Swaziland's criminalization of consensual same-sex practices. This study explored social processes of marginalization to assess how they could potentiate HIV vulnerabilities and limit engagement in HIV prevention services. Additionally, we assessed positive change to better understand existing strategies employed by LGBT persons to challenge these HIV prevention barriers.

A study of vulnerable student populations, exclusion and marginalization in Sierra Leonean secondary schools: a social justice theory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sierra Leone faces challenges in ensuring equitable and inclusive education for all its citizens. Certain groups, including pregnant students, student mothers, students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students, and those without family support, are particularly vulnerable to exclusion and marginalisation. These groups are identified as vulnerable based on criteria established by organisations such as the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which highlight the interplay between health, socio-economic statu

Opportunistic screening for COPD among socially marginalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common disease associated with premature death. Tobacco exposure is the main risk factor, but lower socioeconomic status, early life insults, and occupational exposures are also important risk factors. Socially marginalized people, facing homelessness, substance use disorder, and mental illness, are likely to have a higher risk of developing COPD, and, furthermore, experience barriers to healthcare access and consequently poorer outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess COPD prevalence and the impact of opportunistic screening

Socioeconomic marginalization, social exclusion, and engagement in transactional sex among transgender women living with HIV: the role of multidimensional gender affirmation.

Gender affirmation (GAF) is a multidimensional (psychological, social, medical, administrative) social determinant of health for transgender individuals. Transactional sex (TS) is prevalent among transgender women living with HIV (TWLH), who face intersectional discrimination. GAF's relationship with TS is understudied. ANRS-Trans&HIV(2020-2022) was a French cross-sectional, community-based, life-event study of TWLH. We used clustering analyses to identify patterns of GAF among TWLH and compared TS engagement across clusters. 331/506 (65%) were currently engaged in TS. Most reported income <10

Nowhere to go? A study of marginalization, social connection, and mental health outcomes among young adults experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic onset necessitated large-scale closures of third places, potentially exacerbating social barriers experienced by young adults in the United States. To better understand the role of urban form in facilitating socialization, we examine the effects of pandemic-based third place closures on mental health outcomes as mediated by changes in social connection. Because identifying as a racial, gender, or sexual minority can compound baseline disadvantages rooted in systemic inequities, we investigate outcome differences for non-white, woman/nonbinary, and LGBTQ+ young

Syndemic theory and HIV-related risk among young transgender women: the role of multiple, co-occurring health problems and social marginalization.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed whether multiple psychosocial factors are additive in their relationship to sexual risk behavior and self-reported HIV status (i.e., can be characterized as a syndemic) among young transgender women and the relationship of indicators of social marginalization to psychosocial factors. METHODS: Participants (n = 151) were aged 15 to 24 years and lived in Chicago or Los Angeles. We collected data on psychosocial factors (low self-esteem, polysubstance use, victimization related to transgender identity, and intimate partner violence) and social marginalization indicators (

The Impact of Social Determinants of Maternal Mental Health in Marginalized Mothers.

Background: A deeper understanding of the key determinants of maternal mental health is important for improving care for women, especially women who are at an economic disadvantage. Objectives: To explore the associations of select social determinants: access, social support, and stress, with the onset of antepartum depression in low-income mothers. Participants: The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is an ongoing, population-based surveillance system with selected data from 2016 to 2019, establishing a randomly selected sample of women with a recent live birth at most 4 mont

The technology-dependent child and the socially marginalized family: a provisional framework.

The aim of the grounded theory investigation described in this article was to begin to develop an explanatory model of the transition of technology-dependent children to home- and community-based care that would account for variation in process and outcome. To study the transition process prospectively, the investigation was initiated during discharge planning and continued for 1 year following discharge. Data sources included participant observation at discharge planning meetings; interviews with family caregivers, health professionals, and community informants; videotapes; conceptually relev

Social and economic marginalization in the context of a public health emergency: HIV care disruptions experienced by black sexual minority men (BSMM).

BACKGROUND: HIV in the United States disproportionately affects Black sexual minority men (BSMM), including disparities in HIV care engagement and outcomes. During public health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, marginalized populations such as BSMM may face additional barriers to HIV care engagement. METHODS: We examined associations between HIV care engagement (current antiretroviral therapy use, healthcare visits for HIV, viral load testing, viral load suppression) and experiencing COVID-19-related disruptions to HIV care in a sample of BSMM living with HIV in 2022 (n = 172).
