Unpacking the Social Media Happiness Paradox: How Social Media Stressors Undermine Subjective Well-Being Through Social Media Fatigue.

With the increasing embeddedness of social media in everyday life, digital platforms have become important spaces for interpersonal connection, self-presentation, and emotional experience. However, continuous social media engagement does not necessarily enhance users' happiness; instead, it may coincide with psychological strain and lower subjective well-being (SWB), forming what this study refers to as the social media happiness paradox. In this study, the paradox is positioned as the focal phenomenon to be explained rather than as a standalone empirical construct. Drawing on social compariso

Problematic Social Media Use or Social Media Addiction in Pediatric Populations.

With the advent of smartphones and the popularization of social media sites at the beginning of the twenty-first century, children and adolescents have been exposed to a world of virtual interactions in social networking sites that are designed to increase engagement of the user for profit. In this article, we review the epidemiology of use of social media, its addictive features, and potential negative consequences of problematic use, and the research on current interventions known to reduce use. We also give recommendations spanning from the policy to the individual level for children to bui

Social media users' perceptions about health mis- and disinformation on social media.

This study used recently released nationally representative data with new measures on health information seeking to estimate the prevalence and predictors of adult social media users' perceptions of health mis- and disinformation on social media. Most adults who use social media perceive some (46%) or a lot (36%) of false or misleading health information on social media, but nearly one-fifth reported either none or a little (18%). More than two-thirds of participants reported that they were unable to assess social media information as true or false (67%). Our study identified certain populatio

[Social media, are they necessary?].

OBJECTIVES: the aim of the present monograph is to update the estimation of the number of people living with cancer in Italy, to describe geographic variability, and estimate the number of long-term survivors, i.e., people living five years or more after a cancer diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: the study included the data of the AIRTUMdatabase. Twenty-four Cancer Registries (CRs) (covering 27% of the Italian population) collected information on the incidence and vital status of 1,275,353 cases diagnosed between 1978 and 2005. For each CR, the observed prevalence was calculated up to the max

Social Media Friendship Jealousy.

A new measure to assess friendship jealousy in the context of social media was developed. This one-factor, seven-item measure was psychometrically sound, showing evidence of validity and reliability in three samples of North American adults (Study 1, n = 491; Study 2, n = 494; Study 3, n = 415) and one-, two-, and three-year stability (Study 3). Women reported more social media friendship jealousy than men (Studies 2 and 3) and younger women had the highest levels of social media friendship jealousy (compared with younger men and older men and women; Study 2). Social media friendship jealousy

The social media manifesto: a comprehensive review of the impact of social media on emergency management.

Over the past five years, social media have impacted emergency management and disaster response in numerous ways. The emergency management professional must begin to accept this impact not as an arbitrary consequence of an uncontrolled disaster, but rather as a tool to help coordinate, manage and facilitate a safe and expected response during emergencies and disasters. This paper will explain the power and purpose of social media as well as how social media systems have equalised capabilities for all levels and sizes of government. Moreover, this paper will also highlight the social media syst

Salience and tolerance are not indicators of problematic social media use: Evidence from the Social Media Disorder Scale and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The components model of addiction outlines six criteria shared by all addictive disorders. This proposal has been widely applied to conceptualize behavioral addictions, including problematic social media use (PSMU). However, certain criteria can be defined as "core" (e.g., mood modification, relapse, withdrawal, conflict), reflecting problematic involvement, while others as "peripheral" (e.g., salience, tolerance), reflecting non-problematic involvement. We evaluated whether a two-factor model distinguishing between core and peripheral criteria provides a better fit than t

Nudging Social Media toward Accuracy.

A meaningful portion of online misinformation sharing is likely attributable to Internet users failing to consider accuracy when deciding what to share. As a result, simply redirecting attention to the concept of accuracy can increase sharing discernment. Here we discuss the importance of accuracy and describe a limited-attention utility model that is based on a theory about inattention to accuracy on social media. We review research that shows how a simple nudge or prompt that shifts attention to accuracy increases the quality of news that people share (typically by decreasing the sharing of

Sharing Antivaping Social Media Messages.

PURPOSE: Positive vaping portrayals and marketing from influencers receive billions of views on visual-based social media. Strategies are needed to counter these appeals and encourage sharing about health harms. METHODS: We recruited 712 US young adults (ages 18-25 years) through Cloud Research for our between-persons experiment. Participants were randomized to view four social media messages in one of the following three conditions: health harms, health harms with a social impact, or control. Participants first viewed and interacted with their condition messages on a simulated social media f

The limited effects of social media use on misperceptions Social media's limited role in misperceptions.

Social media use has the potential to promote misperceptions, but evidence is mixed. Despite social media characteristics that include homophilous social networks, algorithms that can reinforce biases, and social bots that promote falsehoods, there is no evidence of a strong association between social media use and misperceptions. This project offers the strongest empirical test of this relation to date, providing additional evidence of the minimal effects of social media use on misperceptions. Data come from two independent large-N panel studies, each paired with online tracking data, one foc

Social media & subjectivity: Adolescent lived experiences with social media in a Southern California middle school.

The widespread use of social media (SM) platforms among adolescents has raised concerns over its role in increased adverse physical and mental health conditions. However, current research linking SM use with adolescent health relies on tenuous correlational associations, disproportionately focuses on harmful effects of its use, and seldom examines the perspectives of youth themselves (Odgers and Jensen, 2020; Schønning et al., 2020). This article examines adolescent lived experience in relation to SM platform engagement. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2018-2019 and 2021-2022

Social media addiction, self-concept clarity, and social media fatigue: a two-wave longitudinal study.

Although social media addiction has been linked to numerous negative psychological outcomes, the self-level processes underlying the connection between this addiction and psychological burnout have not been sufficiently elucidated. This study examined whether self-concept clarity plays a mediating role in the longitudinal relationship between social media addiction and social media fatigue in a sample of Turkish adults. Conducted using a two-wave cross-lagged panel design, the study collected data from 344 adults (Mage = 34.06, SD = 8.81; 68% female) at two different measurement points three m

Transgender Adolescents' Uses of Social Media for Social Support.

PURPOSE: Transgender adolescents are at higher risk for negative mental health outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality, compared with cisgender adolescents. Social media may be an effective venue for addressing these health disparities because most adolescents have access to online information and socialization. This study used qualitative inquiry to explore transgender adolescents' uses of social media for social support. METHODS: Transgender adolescents between the ages of 15 and 18 years with a social media profile were recruited from a pediatric gender clinic in the Midwest

Misrepresentation of semaglutide in social media.

In recent years, semaglutide has repeatedly attracted attention in the press and on social media due to its effects in weight management. The social media hype led to off-label use and global supply shortages. Our goal was to identify differences in the presentation of semaglutide on individual social media platforms. Additionally, we aim to investigate the mentioning of various aspects such as adverse drug reactions, drug indications, supply shortages, and costs. Current social media trends regarding semaglutide were also included in the analysis. We collected semaglutide-related posts from t
