How social status shapes U.S. children's beliefs about social mobility.

Children grow up within social hierarchies that shape their everyday lives. Social mobility is a core mechanism through which societies either challenge or maintain existing inequalities. The present study examined how U.S. children's social status-both experimentally manipulated and measured at the neighborhood level-shapes their beliefs about social mobility for themselves and their high- and low-status peers. Children (N = 130; 3-8 years; 70 girls, 59 boys, 1 non-binary; 12.3% Asian, 6.9% Black, 11.6% Latine, 20.7% Multiracial, and 48.5% White) were randomly assigned to either experimentall

Unpacking Indigenous Social Mobility: Entrepreneurs, Social Networks, and Connections to Culture.

In settler societies, upward social mobility by Indigenous people is seen in the growth of successful professional and entrepreneurial classes where both wealth creation and social power are significant resources. Yet, public and academic discourses perpetuate the belief that social mobility impacts negatively on Indigenous people by placing cultural identity in conflict with capitalist business practices. Using data from an international comparison consisting of interviews with 220 Indigenous entrepreneurs in research sites across three countries, this article shows that the belief is unfound

Belief in Social Mobility Mitigates Hostility Resulting From Disadvantaged Social Standing.

Comparing economically unfavorably with similar others has detrimental consequences for an individual, ultimately resulting in low physical health, delinquency, and hostility. In four studies ( N = 2,032), we examined whether believing in a mobile society-one offering fair chances and opportunity-mitigates hostile emotions resulting from disadvantaged social standing. We find that with increasing mobility belief, negative comparisons have gradually less impact on hostility. Specifically, measured (Studies 1 and 4) and manipulated (Studies 2 and 3) social mobility belief moderated the link betw

Social mobility and gonorrhoea in Germany during 2020.

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of STIs is likely to be related to levels of social activity and mobility. Novel datasets detailing levels of social activity were made widely available during the COVID-19 pandemic. These allow the relationship between activity and STI incidence to be examined. METHODS: The correlation between social activities and the reported number of gonorrhoea cases between March and December 2020 in Germany was studied. Regression through Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) time series modelling identified those activities associated with case numbers. RESULTS: A

Mobility, disability, and social engagement in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: To examine cross sectional associations between mobility with or without disability and social engagement in a community-based sample of older adults. METHODS: Social engagement of participants (n = 676) was outside the home (participation in organizations and use of senior centers) and in home (talking by phone and use of Internet). Logistic or proportional odds models evaluated the association between social engagement and position in the disablement process (no mobility limitations, mobility limitations/no disability, and mobility limitations/disability). RESULTS: Low mobility

Rising and falling on the social ladder: The bidimensional social mobility beliefs scale.

Recent works in the field of Social Psychology have shown the importance of studying subjective social mobility from different perspectives. In the literature about subjective societal mobility, most of the research is focused on the mobility-immobility framing. However, several authors suggested studying social mobility beliefs effects differentiating according to mobility's trajectory, that is, upward (i.e., improving status over time) and downward (i.e., getting worse in status over time). The present research was motivated by the lack of measures that discriminate between beliefs in upward

Social capital I: measurement and associations with economic mobility.

Social capital-the strength of an individual's social network and community-has been identified as a potential determinant of outcomes ranging from education to health1-8. However, efforts to understand what types of social capital matter for these outcomes have been hindered by a lack of social network data. Here, in the first of a pair of papers9, we use data on 21 billion friendships from Facebook to study social capital. We measure and analyse three types of social capital by ZIP (postal) code in the United States: (1) connectedness between different types of people, such as those with low

Intergenerational social mobility and self-rated health in Canada.

A growing body of research seeks to reveal the health effects of 'falling from grace' or 'rising from rags,' i.e., experiencing downward or upward mobility relative to one's family socioeconomic background. In this study, we mobilized a unique dataset, the 2012 Longitudinal and International Study of Adults linked to historical income data from the Canada Revenue Agency, to investigate associations between both educational and income mobility and self-rated health in a national sample of approximately 2500 women and 2300 men aged 25 to 50. Compared to educational immobility, extreme downward e

Mobility and social resilience in the Cuvette Centrale peatlands.

The cultures and livelihoods of communities whose customary lands include areas of the Cuvette Centrale peatlands are deeply entangled with seasonal rains and flood pulses. We conducted a mixed method qualitative study in a peatland-adjacent fishing camp in Équateur province in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Cuvette Centrale. Mobility is one way that local residents of this fishing camp cope with and adapt to a dynamic hydroclimate. Here, we explore the outcome of different mobility and livelihood strategies on resilience. We first show how local livelihood activities respond to seasonal v

Neighborhood social capital and achieved mobility of older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate associations of neighborhood social capital and mobility of older adults. METHOD: A community-based survey (Philadelphia, 2010) assessed mobility (Life-Space Assessment [LSA]; range = 0-104) of older adults (n = 675, census tracts = 256). Social capital was assessed for all adults interviewed from 2002-2010 (n = 13,822, census tracts = 374). Generalized estimating equations adjusted for individual- and neighborhood-level characteristics estimated mean differences and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in mobility by social capital tertiles. Social networks as pathways of political mobility in Portuguese governments.

Political mobility in executive appointments is often explained through party affiliation and career trajectories, yet relational embeddedness across institutional arenas may also characterise those who reach ministerial office. We examine, retrospectively and in an exploratory manner, whether the social networks formed by co-participation in Portuguese governmental and parliamentary venues are associated with ministerial appointments. Using web-scraped data on the composition of the Constitutional Governments and the Portuguese Parliament between 2015 and 2024, complemented with the Registers

Social capital and career choices among rural Chinese youth: The mediating role of social mobility perception.

BACKGROUND: In the digital age, the influence of social capital on youth employment has grown increasingly intricate, with the mechanisms of online and offline social capital, particularly for vulnerable groups like rural youth in China, remaining underexplored. AIMS: This study investigated the association of social capital with rural Chinese youth's career choices and explored the mediating role of social mobility perception. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2017 Chinese General Social Survey, including 489 rural youth. Social mobility perception was measured by MacArthur Scale of Subj

Social inequality in onset of mobility disability among older Danes: the mediation effect of social relations.

OBJECTIVE: This article investigates social inequality in onset of mobility disability and in measures of social relations and whether social relations mediated the effect of socioeconomic status on mobility. METHOD: A total of 2,825 nondisabled older men and women, enrolled in the Danish Intervention Study on Preventive Home Visits, constituted the study population. Data were obtained by mailed questionnaires in 1998-1999 and 2001-2002 and by merging analyses to registers at Statistics Denmark. RESULTS: There was a social gradient in onset of mobility disability, with odds ratio of 1.11 (1.

Determinants and health outcomes of trajectories of social mobility in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate trajectories in socio-economic position (SEP) and the onset of a range of physical and mental health outcomes and commencement of treatment. METHODS: The Household Income and Labour Dynamics Australia (HILDA) study, a nationally representative prospective cohort study over the period 2001 to 2020 was used to define trajectories of SEP. Trajectories of low, low-middle, upper-middle and high SEP and decreasing (low-middle to upper-middle SEP) or increasing (upper-middle to lower-middle SEP) SEP were identified using k-longitudinal means. Assessing factors associated with social connectedness in adults with mobility disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with mobility disabilities are likely to report limitations in community participation and social connectedness for a variety of reasons, including inaccessible physical environments, health issues, transportation barriers, and limited financial resources. Improving social connectedness is a public health issue and research shows its relation to overall health and life expectancy. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to (1) assess social activity, isolation, and loneliness among people with mobility disabilities compared to those with non-mobility disabilities and (2) u

Life-course Social Mobility and Reduced Risk of Adverse Birth Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Higher adult socioeconomic position (SEP) is associated with better birth outcomes. However, few studies incorporate life-course or intergenerational SEP, which may inform etiology and targeted prevention efforts. This study tested whether life-course social mobility from childhood was associated with lower risk of adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: Data were from the Life-course Influences of Fetal Environments (LIFE) retrospective cohort study among black women, 2009-2011, in metropolitan Detroit, MI. This study (analyzed in 2014-2016) examined whether social mobility was associ
