Social and sexual networks of newly diagnosed people living with HIV: a qualitative social network analysis.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of HIV transmission dynamics is needed to further reduce the number of new HIV diagnoses in Belgium. As environmental and social context play an important role in explaining HIV acquisition despite the availability of effective HIV prevention, this study investigated how social and sexual networks may have influenced HIV prevention and risk behavior among a group of people newly diagnosed with HIV, including their perceptions of how they acquired HIV and their ability to disclose their HIV status. METHODS: We used an ego-centric social network approach, gene

Social network analysis to characterize women victims of violence.

BACKGROUND: In Europe, it is estimated that one third of women had experienced at least one physical or sexual violence after their 15. Taking into account the severe health consequences, the Emergency Department (ED), may offer an opportunity to recognize when an aggression is part of the spectrum of violence. This study applies Social Network analysis (SNA) to ED data in the Lazio region with the objective to identify patterns of diagnoses, within all the ED accesses of women experiencing an aggression, that are signals for gender-based violence against women. We aim to develop a risk assess

Social Network Influence on Syphilis Testing for Black Sexual Minority Men in Baltimore, Maryland: A Cross-sectional Social Network Analysis.

Black sexual minority men (BSMM), including those with HIV, have disproportionate rates of syphilis infection. This study examines the associations of social network characteristics on syphilis testing, given that social network approaches are well established as effective methods to establish health-promoting social norms. We analyzed baseline data from a sexual health behavioral intervention. Using multivariable logistic regression, we modeled individual and social network characteristics on syphilis testing. Of the 256 participants, 37% tested for syphilis in the past year. In the adjusted

Using social network analysis as a tool in action research.

The following paper presents case examples of one research team's use of social network analysis (SNA) with three different collaboratives in South Florida: (a) a Collective Impact initiative seeking to end youth homelessness, (b) a university collaborative of campus organizations working towards Black students' concerns, and (c) a movement network of local social justice organizations. The research team used SNA to assess the level of connectivity of three different community coalitions. While research questions were slightly different for each collaborative, each project asked about the freq

Impulsivity and problematic social network sites use: A meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic Social Network Sites Use (PSNSU) has been defined as the inability to self-regulate one's use of social networks that adversely affects the user's interpersonal relationships, work or academic activities, and psychological well-being. Among PSNSU risk factors, impulsivity has gained attention. Evidence has emerged about the importance of considering impulsivity from a multidimensional approach since specific dimensions of impulsivity were found to be involved in specific addictive behaviors. Therefore, the present meta-analysis aims to examine the association between

Potential benefits and harms of a peer support social network service on the internet for people with depressive tendencies: qualitative content analysis and social network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Internet peer support groups for depression are becoming popular and could be affected by an increasing number of social network services (SNSs). However, little is known about participant characteristics, social relationships in SNSs, and the reasons for usage. In addition, the effects of SNS participation on people with depression are rather unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to explore the potential benefits and harms of an SNS for depression based on a concurrent triangulation design of mixed methods strategy, including qualitative content analysis and social network analysis. Using Social Network Analysis to Measure Social Inclusion for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

The aim of this perspective is to describe the theory and practical steps of using principles of social network analysis to help measure the social inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Social inclusion for those with disabilities has become an important area of focus of rehabilitative professionals in the past decade. Social inclusion is comprised of the domains participation and social interaction. Decreased social inclusion can negatively impact quality of life and health. Individuals with IDD continue to experience barriers to social inclusion suc

Behavioral Characteristics of Medical Students on Social Media Platforms: Topic Modeling and Social Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Medical students experience sustained academic, clinical, and psychosocial pressures. Online forums provide an informal space where students seek information, express concerns, and exchange peer support. However, few studies have analyzed these interactions longitudinally based on real-world data from online social platforms. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to integrate topic modeling, temporal topic analysis, and social network analysis (SNA) to investigate evolving concerns, network positions, and influence structures within the bulletin board system of a medical university over a 7

Network Characteristics of Social Support Sources for People Living with HIV Under Community Follow-Up: A Social Network Analysis in Luzhou, China.

For people living with HIV (PLWH), the configuration of social support networks may shape access to support, yet the structural position of support sources remains poorly understood. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 446 PLWH receiving community follow-up in Luzhou, China, from March to May 2023. A two-mode network (participants × 10 support-source categories) was analyzed in UCINET to describe support-source degree and core-periphery structure. Community Health Service Centers, hospitals, and family members occupied core positions. Overall support scores differed by gender (female vs

Integration of Spatial and Social Network Analysis in Disease Transmission Studies.

This study presents a case study of how social network and spatial analytical methods can be used simultaneously for disease transmission modeling. The paper first reviews strategies employed in previous studies and then offers the example of transmission of two bacterial diarrheal diseases in rural Bangladesh. The goal is to understand how diseases vary socially above and beyond the effects of the local neighborhood context. Patterns of cholera and shigellosis incidence are analyzed in space and within kinship-based social networks in Matlab, Bangladesh. Data include a spatially referenced lo
