Happiness and social participation in aging.

This paper reports on a 4-year longitudinal study of 60 elderly women. Data about their happiness and social activities were collected using the Affect Balance Scale and nine measures of socially relevant activities, including three measures of media use, three of interpersonal interaction, and three of activities in voluntary associations. Direct relationships between happiness and social activity among elderly people were found in analysis of these data. This finding was not spurious according to longitudinal data: activity increments were associated with happiness and decrements with unhapp

Role of social capital on edentulism, social participation and cognition.

OBJECTIVES: The role of social factors in the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function remains underexplored. This cross-sectional study investigates whether social participation mediates the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function, and whether contextual social capital moderates these associations among older Chinese adults. METHODS: Data from 7796 Chinese adults aged ≥65 was obtained from the 2017-18 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Tooth loss was self-reported and cognitive function was measured using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental

Association between participation in social network service groups and offline social networks.

AIM: Although some previous studies have suggested using a social networking service (SNS) to create and maintain offline social networks among younger generations, whether similar outcomes would apply to middle-aged and older individuals is uncertain. This study aimed to examine the association between participation in groups via SNS and greater offline social networks among middle-aged and older individuals. METHODS: We conducted a web-based questionnaire survey on 3106 respondents from September to October 2021 among members of "the Shumi-to Club," an SNS in Japan. They indicated the numbe

Sports Participation, Social Networks, and Sexual Violence Perpetration.

Adolescent sexual violence (SV), which includes non-contact verbal sexual harassment (SH) and forced sexual contact (FSC), is a significant public health problem with long-term impacts on health and well-being. Understanding how sports participation is linked to SV can inform prevention efforts; however, the current literature is unclear about the nature of this association. Using data from 20 high schools, we investigate whether athletes in certain sports are at higher risk of SH and FSC perpetration than either other athletes or sports non-participants, and whether the risk is moderated by g

Neural processing of social participation in borderline personality disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are known to be highly sensitive to social rejection. Social information processing is assumed to play a key role for this shared psychopathological phenomenon. The first steps in social information processing are to encode social cues and to create a mental representation of the social situation. The aim of the current study was to test whether the perception of social participation in patients with BPD and patients with SAD is biased in this initial stage of social processing. Focus was on the

Influence of personalised citizen assistance for social participation (APIC) on health, social participation, and life satisfaction: Perspectives from older adults and attendants.

INTRODUCTION: The personalised citizen assistance for social participation (APIC) is promising to foster health and social participation of older adults with disabilities, especially when working in collaboration with occupational therapists. When implemented by community organisations, little is known about the influence of APIC on older adults, including perspectives of older adults and attendants. This study aimed to explore the short-term influence of APIC on physical and mental health, social participation, and life satisfaction of older adults with disabilities by considering the perspec

The Adolescent Concept of Social Participation-A Qualitative Study on the Concept of Social Participation from Adolescents with and without Physical Disabilities.

PURPOSE: The construct of social participation is still not clearly defined. To reach a better understanding of social participation, the perspectives of adolescents must be taken into account. This study explores the adolescent concept of social participation and expands knowledge of the meaning of subjective components of the term. METHODS: Thirty-four semi-structured interviews were conducted with adolescents with and without physical disabilities or chronic diseases between the ages of 12 and 17 and analyzed according to grounded theory. RESULTS: Adolescents describe social participation

Aspects of social participation and neighborhood perception: ELSI-Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of the physical and social surroundings of the neighborhood, which are presented as facilitators or barriers for the social participation of Brazilian older adults. METHODS: The study was conducted in a probabilistic representative sample of the Brazilian population aged 50 years and older and who lived in urban areas (n = 7,935). The response variable was social participation, which was defined from two questions about activities performed with other persons: visited friends or relatives in their homes in the last 12 months (yes, no); went out with other pe

Perceived impacts of a first wheelchair on social participation.

PURPOSE: To document perceived impacts in users' daily activities and social roles (social participation) following the acquisition of a first manual or powered wheelchair. METHODS: A qualitative design with a phenomenological approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. An interview guide was developed based on the 12 social participation categories in the Disability Creation Process (DCP) conceptual model as themes underlying the questions: 'What has changed in your daily life since you got your new wheelchair?' and 'What has not changed in your daily life that you thought

Electrophysiological evidence of processing social threat words in social anxiety participants.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with social anxiety (SA) tend to show heightened attentional biases toward socially threatening information. However, it remains unclear at which stages of neural processing these biases emerge. This study aimed to clarify how social anxiety modulates the temporal dynamics of processing social threat words. METHODS: Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded while participants performed an emotional Stroop task, in which neutral and social threat words were presented in sequential blocks (neutral followed by threat). Participants were divided into high-social-anx

Mental health, availability to participate in social change, and social movement accessibility.

People with illnesses and disabilities routinely face obstacles to political participation, including participation in social movements. Conventional social movement studies primarily theorize impediments to social movement participation in terms of personal constraints, as implied by the term "biographical (un)availability." However, studies in disability, health, and illness resist locating disability-related constraints solely within the individual, pushing fields to ask how environments can be disabling in and of themselves. Thus, by extending social movement theory through this Disabled/C

Social networks, social participation, and health among youth living in extreme poverty in rural Malawi.

Extensive research documents that social network characteristics affect health, but knowledge of peer networks of youth in Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa is limited. We examine the networks and social participation of youth living in extreme poverty in rural Malawi, using in-depth interviews with 32 youth and caregivers. We describe youth's peer networks and assess how gender and the context of extreme poverty influence their networks and participation, and how their networks influence health. In-school youth had larger, more interactive, and more supportive networks than out-of-school youth, a

Resilience, social support, and participation among adolescents in conflict situations.

INTRODUCTION: Conflicts, such as the October 2023 Israel-Gaza war, constitute stressors that may affect individuals' daily participation and resilience, particularly among adolescents. The socio-ecological resilience perspective emphasizes that effects of adversity are not uniform, but vary according to individuals' access to, and capacity to utilize, contextual resources. However, research in this area is scarce. This study examined the contribution of social support (family and friends), and participation in daily activities at school, home and the community, to adolescents' resilience in th

Social factors related to participation among people with Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Parkinson's disease (PD) significantly impacts participation in daily activities, affecting the quality of life of individuals living with PD. While impairment-level factors have been extensively studied, the influence of social factors on participation remains less explored. This study investigated the contribution of social factors, including social resources and social isolation, to participation in instrumental, leisure, and social activities among people with PD. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 86 community-dwelling adults with PD (Age: 65.02 ± 9.63yrs). Pearson cor

Smartphone technology, social network maintenance, and social participation among Mandarin-speaking older immigrants in Canada.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The rapid global expansion of digital technologies has reshaped everyday life across generations, yet the role of smartphones in older immigrants' social well-being remains insufficiently understood. Drawing on the sociotechnical perspective that ageing and technology are co-constituted; our study examines how Mandarin-speaking older immigrants in Canada use smartphones to overcome social isolation and sustain social participation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were obtained from 102 qualitative interviews conducted across seven Canadian cities as part of the In

Impact of social support on participation after stroke in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Participation which entails involvement in life situations and represents a higher level of functioning can be severely restricted after a stroke. This study investigated the impact of social support on participation of stroke survivors in Nigeria. METHODS: Ninety-six community-residing stroke survivors were recruited from physiotherapy outpatient departments of two tertiary care hospitals in Northern Nigeria. Socio-demographic, clinical, participation (London Handicap Scale), and social support (Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support) data were obtained. The impact of
