Social Prescribing and the Welfare State.

Current public policy does not create the conditions people need to be healthy. In this context, social prescribing, which identifies unmet needs in clinical care and links individuals to community-based resources that help meet those needs, can help mitigate the health consequences of poor public policy. This is important, and social prescribing programs should be expanded. However, social prescribing does not fundamentally reconfigure the power relations and distributive institutions that create the problems in the first place. On the other hand, the welfare state, by publicly providing nece

Digital social prescribing: a concept analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Digital Social Prescribing (DSP) represents an innovative paradigm that integrates digital technologies into traditional social prescribing frameworks to address the social determinants of health (SDOH). However, persistent conceptual inconsistencies and a paucity of theoretical clarity have constrained its systematic application and evaluation within public health and nursing practices. AIMS: This study aims to clarify the definition of digital social prescribing, distinguish it from traditional social prescribing, and identify its core characteristics through a systematic conc

Social Prescribing as a Catalyst for System Transformation.

Rising social, health and healthcare challenges in Canada signal a need for a paradigm shift. This issue centres on the case for social prescribing - connecting patients to community resources via "link workers" - as strategic infrastructure for improved population health. The papers in this issue lay out a vision for the future, building on this social prescribing model, and offer implementation lessons, such as prioritizing high-complexity clients and maintaining an equity focus. They also raise some important cautions, such as the need to maintain a strong welfare state, to avoid narrow Nat

Development of social contact and loneliness measures with validation in social prescribing.

AIMS: This paper describes two patient-reported measures of social contact and loneliness, which are closely related concepts. The first measure (R-Outcomes Social Contact measure) was developed from scratch, based on customer needs and literature review. It covers emotional and social aspects using positive terms. The second measure (R-Outcomes Loneliness measure) is adapted from the GSS Loneliness Harmonised Standard. Both measures are patient-reported outcome measures, based on patients' own perception of how they feel. METHOD: This development started in 2016 in response to customers' req

Understanding and advancing nurse prescribing in social care.

BACKGROUND: Non-medical prescribing (NMP) is a relatively new and underutilised addition in social care nursing settings. AIM: To gather insights from prescribers and stakeholders regarding the implementation of NMP in social care organisations. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five prescribers and a stakeholder with experience of NMP in social care settings across England. Data were generated and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. ANALYSIS: Four themes were constructed; working in collaboration; demonstrating the impact of NMP; constructing professional ident

Implementing social prescribing in dentistry: perspectives from community organisations.

Aims Social prescribing is a collaborative approach in which health professionals connect patients with community organisations to improve their health and wellbeing. Before implementing it in dentistry, it is essential to understand how community organisations perceive partnering with dental professionals. Our objective was to explore how community organisations perceive social prescribing and its implementation in dentistry. Methods We conducted a qualitative descriptive study in Montreal, Canada, based on 12 semi-structured interviews with key informants from local community organisations. Training for social prescribing link workers: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing involves connecting people to community-based resources to address non-medical determinants of health. Central to its delivery are link workers; their effectiveness depends, in part, on the availability and quality of training. Despite rapid expansion of the link worker role on an international scale, training provision for this workforce remains fragmented and poorly mapped. AIM: To identify and describe training programmes for link workers reported in the published and grey literature. METHODS: We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology on scoping re

Impact of social prescribing on general practice workload and polypharmacy.

OBJECTIVES: Social prescribing has emerged as a useful tool for helping patients overcome some of the social and behavioural determinants of poor health. There has been little research on the impact of social prescribing on use of primary healthcare resources. This study sought to determine whether social prescribing activities influenced patient-general practitioner (GP) contacts and polypharmacy. STUDY DESIGN: Quality-improvement design with social prescribing activity interventions from an urban general practice in Northern Ireland. METHODS: Patients over 65 years of age with a chronic co

Prospects and Aspirations for Workforce Training and Education in Social Prescribing.

BACKGROUND: A social prescribing (SP) link worker (LW) is responsible for enabling and supporting individuals, by assessing their personal goals and co-producing solutions to make use of appropriate local non-clinical resources or interventions. As an emerging new role, LWs are not regulated by professional bodies associated with SP. Therefore, currently there is no standardised training for LWs who are from varied backgrounds. As such, LWs have varying knowledge about how to deal with individuals with complex needs, which can impact on their decision-making capabilities to seek solutions and

Under pressure: Socially prescribed perfectionism, social evaluation, and stress in middle and late adolescence.

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by stressful life transitions and changes in social environments. Research indicates that socially prescribed perfectionism is a mental health risk factor. This study examines the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism, daily stress, and acute social stress in middle and late adolescence, drawing developmental comparisons between these stages. We also explore social processing factors that help explain the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and stress. Finally, we examine self-oriented perfectionism to see

Social prescribing for socially isolated older adults in rural Japan: a qualitative case study.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing (SP) has not yet been officially introduced in Japan. This qualitative case study aimed to identify the challenges and facilitating factors in the implementation of SP among the socially isolated older population in Akita Prefecture, Japan, based on the perspectives of general practitioners (GP), link workers (LW), and patients. METHOD: We conducted a qualitative case study using semi-structured interviews and Braun & Clarke-informed thematic analysis in seven medical districts in Akita, Japan, with GP (n = 7), LW (n = 10), and older patients (n = 4). From Innovation to Infrastructure: Embedding Social Prescribing in Canada's Care System.

Social prescribing connects people to community-based supports that address the social determinants of health before crisis becomes the entry point to care. More than a service innovation, it is a systems-change strategy that challenges the assumption that families and communities can provide care indefinitely without support. Drawing on the experience of Waltons Trust and the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence, which was founded by the Azrieli Foundation, this paper explores how philanthropy can test, evaluate and scale promising approaches while catalyzing sustainable public investmen

Co-Design for Equity, Inclusion and Engagement: Strategies for Social Prescribing.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing is increasingly promoted as an integrated care strategy that connects individuals to non-clinical community resources to improve health and well-being. Co-design is frequently recommended for developing social prescribing pathways that are acceptable, feasible and responsive to local needs. However, how co-design is operationalised in inclusive and equity-centred ways remains poorly understood. This narrative review synthesises health-related literature on co-design strategies that promote equity and foster inclusion in the development of social prescribing ini

Consensus-based framework for assessing social prescribing schemes in primary healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Social Prescribing Schemes (SPS) incorporate community-based activities (Health Assets, HAs) into primary healthcare (PHC) to address social determinants of health and enhance well-being. Structured evaluation frameworks are needed to ensure equity, accessibility, and measurable outcomes. This study aimed to develop a framework to assess SPS in the Spanish public healthcare system using key stakeholder input. METHODS: A mixed-method approach was applied, including five nominal group discussions (NGDs) with 48 national stakeholders (public health officials, PHC teams, HA providers,

Caring for the lonely: an ethical case for social prescribing against loneliness.

Social prescribing to mitigate loneliness has been gaining traction worldwide in the past two decades. Patients found to be lonely by their clinicians are linked with social services and are encouraged to engage in non-clinical, social activities such as painting and music classes, Tai Chi, outdoor excursions etc. The science grounding the cost-effectiveness of these interventions, however, has been scarce. From a justice perspective which prioritizes resource allocation based on desired outcomes, social prescribing may be hard to justify. Care ethics, however, may be more adept at justifying

Effects of Social Prescribing for Older Adults: An Evidence and Gap Map.

BACKGROUND: Many factors such as declining physical function, low socioeconomic status and unemployment play a role in the complex health and social needs of older adults. While healthcare providers can assist in treating health conditions, non-clinical interventions are most likely needed to meet their social needs and improve wellbeing. Social prescribing has been introduced to help primary care providers and other connectors meet patient's social needs that contribute to poor health and inequalities. With the increasing recognition of these complex challenges, decision-makers need to know w

Models, implementation, and reported outcomes of social prescribing interventions: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing has gained international attention as an approach that connects individuals with community-based, non-clinical resources to address social determinants of health and support well-being. Despite growing use across health and community systems, the evidence remains fragmented, with variation in intervention models, settings, target populations, mechanisms, and implementation conditions. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to map the characteristics of social prescribing interventions, including models, initiation and coordination settings, referred community asse

The future of U.S. social prescribing: foundations, implementation, and leadership summit insights.

The U.S. healthcare system is confronting at least three converging crises: a rapidly aging population with complex needs, rising prevalence of mental illness, and an epidemic of social isolation that contributes substantially to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Current clinical approaches cannot meet demand due to persistent workforce shortages, limited treatment capacity, and variable patient adherence. Social prescribing (SP), which systematically connects patients from healthcare settings to community-based non-clinical supports, including social, cultural, physical activity, an
