Latent structure of social fears and social anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Despite its high prevalence and associated levels of impairment, the latent structure of social anxiety disorder (SAD) is not well understood, with published studies reporting inconsistent results. Furthermore, it is unknown whether the latent structure of social fears in individuals with and without SAD is the same. METHOD: Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis followed by multiple indicators multiple causes (MIMIC) analysis were conducted on 13 commonly feared social situations assessed in a nationally representative sample including individuals with

Factor structure of social fears: The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

In the assessment of social anxiety, investigators often differentiate between social interactional anxiety and performance anxiety. The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), a clinician-administered measure of social anxiety and avoidance, was originally developed with separate subscales for the assessment of fear and avoidance of situations involving social interaction and performance/observation by others. Separate confirmatory factor analyses of the LSAS fear and avoidance ratings demonstrated that this two-factor model did not provide an adequate fit to the data, suggesting the need to f

The structure of social-evaluative threat detection in social anxiety disorder.

The integrated aetiological and maintenance (IAM) model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) conceptualises four social-evaluative cognitive processes (anticipatory processing, attention to the self, attention to threat in the environment, and post-event processing) as facets of a social-evaluative threat detection construct. The current study tested this by examining potential factor structures underlying the four social-evaluative cognitive processes. Baseline data from two randomised controlled trials, consisting of 306 participants with SAD who completed measures of the four social-evaluative

Early insight into social network structure predicts climbing the social ladder.

While occupying an influential position within one's social network brings many advantages, it is unknown how certain individuals rise in social prominence. Leveraging a longitudinal dataset that tracks an entirely new network of college freshmen (N = 187), we test whether "climbing the social ladder" depends on knowing how other people are connected to each other. Those who ultimately come to occupy the most influential positions exhibit early and accurate representations of their network's general, abstract structure (i.e., who belongs to which communities and cliques). In contrast, detailed

Social determinants of brain structure and cognition.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic disadvantage is recognized as a risk factor for cognitive decline, yet its associated neural pathways remain unclear. We investigated whether neighborhood disadvantage, measured by the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), was associated with cognitive performance in older adults and patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), and whether structural brain differences explained this relationship. METHODS: Participants included 822 older adults (478 cognitively unimpaired [CU], 271 with MCI, and 73 with AD). Associations between ADI, cognition,

Social phobia: further evidence of dimensional structure.

OBJECTIVE: Social phobia is a common mental disorder associated with significant impairment. Current research and treatment models of social phobia rely on categorical diagnostic conceptualizations lacking empirical support. This study aims to further research exploring whether social phobia is best conceptualized as a dimension or a discrete categorical disorder. METHODS: This study used three distinct taxometric techniques (mean above minus below a cut, maximum Eigen value and latent mode) to explore the latent structure of social phobia in two large epidemiological samples, using indicator

Factor structure of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale.

In the study of social anxiety, it is common to differentiate between social interaction versus performance anxiety. The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale was designed to assess social interaction anxiety, and the Social Phobia Scale to assess fear of scrutiny by others (Mattick and Clarke, 1989). In common use, these scales are typically administered together and treated as subscales of a larger measure. However, the joint factor structure of these instruments has never been examined; therefore, it is unclear whether or not the items on these scales actually represent distinct aspects of socia

Molecular advances in understanding social insect population structure.

Social insects present many phenomena seen in all organisms but in more extreme forms and with larger sample sizes than those observable in most natural populations of vertebrates. Microsatellites are proving very much more informative than allozymes for the analysis of population biological problems, and prolifically polymorphic markers are fairly readily developed. In addition, the male-haploid genetic system of many social insects facilitates genetic analysis. The ability to amplify DNA from sperm stored in a female's sperm storage device enables the determination of mating types long after

Inferring social structure from continuous-time interaction data.

Relational event data, which consist of events involving pairs of actors over time, are now commonly available at the finest of temporal resolutions. Existing continuous-time methods for modeling such data are based on point processes and directly model interaction "contagion," whereby one interaction increases the propensity of future interactions among actors, often as dictated by some latent variable structure. In this article, we present an alternative approach to using temporal-relational point process models for continuous-time event data. We characterize interactions between a pair of a

The structure of vulnerabilities for social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder symptoms are generally proposed to be related to broad temperamental vulnerabilities (e.g., a low level of approach and high level of avoidance temperament), specific psychological vulnerabilities (e.g., fears of negative and positive evaluation), and additional disorders (e.g., major depressive disorder). However, existing tests of such a model have either not considered depressive symptoms or relied on samples of undergraduates. We examined these and related questions via a latent variable model in a large dataset (N=2253) that combined participants across a variety o

Social Order: Using The Sequential Structure of Social Interaction to Discriminate Abnormal Social Behavior in the Rat.

Social interactions form the basis of a broad range of functions related to survival and mating. The complexity of social behaviors and the flexibility required for normal social interactions make social behavior particularly susceptible to disruption. The consequences of developmental insults in the social domain and the associated neurobiological factors are commonly studied in rodents. Though methods for investigating social interactions in the laboratory are diverse, animals are typically placed together in an apparatus for a brief period (under 30 min) and allowed to interact freely while

The factor structure of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale.

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) are two compendium measures that have become some of the most popular self-report scales of social anxiety. Despite their popularity, it remains unclear whether it is necessary to maintain two separate scales of social anxiety. The primary objective of the present study was to examine the factor analytic structure of both measures to determine the factorial validity of each scale. For this purpose, we administered both scales to 577 patients at the beginning of outpatient treatment. Analyzing both scales simultaneous

Social support: its structure and impact on marital disruption.

Availability of social support has been hypothesized to play a role in influencing adjustment to marital disruption either directly or by moderating the debilitating effects of stress. Yet previous research has not adequately conceptualized or measured the nature and availability of social support. In an effort to learn more about the structure and impact of social support as it relates to marital disruption, 50 newly separated men and women were interviewed at 2 months and again at 8 months after their separations. The structure of social support was found to include (a) several important sou

Understanding the relationship between cerebellar structure and social abilities.

BACKGROUND: The cerebellum contains more than 50% of all neurons in the brain and is involved in a broad range of cognitive functions, including social communication and social cognition. Inconsistent atypicalities in the cerebellum have been reported in individuals with autism compared to controls suggesting the limits of categorical case control comparisons. Alternatively, investigating how clinical dimensions are related to neuroanatomical features, in line with the Research Domain Criteria approach, might be more relevant. We hypothesized that the volume of the "cognitive" lobules of the c

Social learning of vocal structure in a nonhuman primate?

BACKGROUND: Non-human primate communication is thought to be fundamentally different from human speech, mainly due to vast differences in vocal control. The lack of these abilities in non-human primates is especially striking if compared to some marine mammals and bird species, which has generated somewhat of an evolutionary conundrum. What are the biological roots and underlying evolutionary pressures of the human ability to voluntarily control sound production and learn the vocal utterances of others? One hypothesis is that this capacity has evolved gradually in humans from an ancestral stag

The structure of social engagement among nursing home residents.

This research tests the reliability and construct validity of social engagement, a new quality of life measure embedded in the federally mandated Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) for the nursing home population. The sample consisted of 1,848 residents from 268 homes in 10 states with data collected by trained research nurses. Three resident groups were formed based on residents' cognitive and ADL functioning. Social engagement was significantly related to average time spent in activities across all three groups. We hypothesized a four-factor model with social engagement distinct from mood

Gender and substance use among Latinx college students: An application of social structure social learning theory.

Social structure social learning theory (SSSL) is a theoretical framework that has been used to understand gender differences in substance use. However, the Latinx community remains understudied in this body of research. Drawing on a Latinx college student sample, we tested the extent to which four social learning mechanisms specified by SSSL theory (positive definitions, neutralizing definitions, differential association, and differential reinforcement) explained gender differences in three substance use outcomes: alcohol intoxication, marijuana use, and illicit prescription drug use. We foun

Social network structure and composition in former NFL football players.

Social networks have broad effects on health and quality of life. Biopsychosocial factors may also modify the effects of brain trauma on clinical and pathological outcomes. However, social network characterization is missing in studies of contact sports athletes. Here, we characterized the personal social networks of former National Football League players compared to non-football US males. In 303 former football players and 269 US males, we found that network structure (e.g., network size) did not differ, but network composition (e.g., proportion of family versus friends) did differ. Football

Kin structure provides no explanation for intruders in social aphids.

Nontraditional social organisms have received increasing attention in recent years, because they present opportunities to study the convergent properties of social evolution. Some aphid species are social, occurring in dense clones with specialized morphs that attack predators and parasites. Little is known about how social aphid colonies resolve conflicts of interest when clonal barriers break down. Pemphigus obesinymphae is a North American gall-forming social aphid that produces both nymphal defenders that protect natal clones, and specialized intruders that invade other nearby clones on th
