Social validity of Research Ethics for All: Social-behavioral research ethics education for community research partners with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Training in research ethics supports community research partners with developmental disabilities to take on additional research responsibilities. We worked with an academic-community partnership to develop an accessible research ethics training tailored to the roles of community research partners with developmental disabilities that leads to certification: Research Ethics for All. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the social validity of the educational activities and certification process. METHODS: We shared the training via a webinar and gathered feedback from attendees using polls (138 a

Adaptation and validation of a social information processing assessment procedure for research.

Biases and deficits in social information processing (SIP) skills are associated with social maladjustment in children and adolescents. There is much literature on the association between processing skills and their relationship to aggressive behavior, but there is limited knowledge about their association with other types of antisocial behavior. In this study we conducted a Spanish adaptation and validation of the Sociale Informatie Verwerkings Test, a Dutch research assessment and diagnostic instrument. For this purpose, construct, content and criterion validity were analyzed through their a

A Systematic Review of Social Validity Trends in Behavior Analytic Research on Major Neurocognitive Disorder.

Social validity is at the heart of applied behavior analysis, examining the extent to which the goals, interventions, and effects of a given treatment are satisfactory to treatment recipients and relevant stakeholders (Wolf, 1978). While social validity measures are critical to include across all populations, persons with Major Neurocognitive Disorder (MND) (formerly Dementia) (Emmady et al., 2022) warrant heightened attention, given both the increasing population of those living with MND and the progressive nature of the disease (WHO, 2023). The current systematic literature review therefore

National Agenda for Disparities Research in Hand Surgery: Validation of Social Determinant of Health Domains and Measurement Constructs.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) encompass various factors of one's environment and have been shown to strongly influence patient health. The effect of SDOH has been evaluated in various medical specialties; however, a paucity of literature exists investigating the effects of SDOH on outcomes in hand surgery. As such, we completed a RAND/University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Delphi Appropriateness process for the purpose of guiding the inclusion of SDOH domains and measurement constructs in hand surgery clinical research. METHODS: A consortium of 9 academic upper-limb su

The social cognition and object relations scale is reliable, valid, and ethical in clinical practice and research: Comment on Sinclair et al. (2023).

Narrative assessment procedures have a rich tradition in psychology and have been widely employed for clinical and research purposes. The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Murray, 1943) and the Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale-Global Rating Method (SCORS-G) have been widely used for eliciting and coding narratives for psychological assessment. Recently, a critical review by Sinclair et al. (2023) asserted that there is insufficient evidence for the use of the SCORS-G in clinical settings, calling for a moratorium on its use. However, their critical review was limited in scope, did no

Social validity as an interactive process.

Social validity in applied behavior analysis remains critically important. However, assessing social validity and responding to its results pose challenges for the field. Social validity assessments are often treated as a one-time measure conducted after intervention. Researchers have urged consideration of social validity as an ongoing, dynamic, and interactive process (i.e., interventions are adjusted based on social validity assessment results). Yet, there has been limited discussion on the interactive process of social validity and the variables that may influence it. This article (a) revi

Measuring associations between social anxiety and use of different types of social media using the Swedish Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users: A psychometric evaluation and cross-sectional study.

Research on the association between social anxiety and social media usage remains inconclusive: despite the preference for computer-mediated communication there is currently no clear empirical support for social anxiety being associated with longer duration of social media use. Self-report measures for social anxiety that are adapted for the context of social media could facilitate further research. The current study aimed to develop a Swedish version of the recently developed Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users (SAS-SMU), evaluate its psychometric properties, and explore associations

The Social Phobia Inventory: validity and reliability in an adolescent community sample.

Social anxiety disorder and social anxiety are highly prevalent psychological conditions in youth. Because of the known risks associated with the spectrum of social anxiety in youth, early detection with valid and reliable assessment measures is imperative. Self-report measures have become the most widely used method of assessment for child and adolescent social anxiety. Because research to date on self-report measures of social anxiety disorder in adolescents is limited, the primary objective of the present study was to contribute to the literature by examining the validity and reliability of

Validity of Social Support Scales Utilized Among HIV-Infected and HIV-Affected Populations: A Systematic Review.

Social support enhances self-management and prevention of behaviors and is typically assessed using self-report scales; however, little is known about the validity of these scales in HIV-infected or affected populations. This systematic review aims to identify available validated social support scales used in HIV-infected and HIV-affected populations. A systematic literature search using key search terms was conducted in electronic databases. After rounds abstract screenings, full-text reviews, and data abstraction 17 studies remained, two of which assessed multiple social support scales, whic

Utility of an Observational Social Skill Assessment as a Measure of Social Cognition in Autism.

Models of impaired social competence in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) highlight deficits in social cognition and social behavior. The Contextual Assessment of Social Skills (CASS) is a laboratory-based assessment of conversation ability in which participants interact with trained confederates who act interested (CASS-I) and bored (CASS-B), sequentially. The increased ecological validity of the CASS allows for better generalization to real-world social situations. Participants' perceptions of confederate behavior, assessed by the CASS Conversation Rating Scale (CRS), might offer additional uti

Measurement invariance of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory.

The Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI) is a commonly used self-report measure of social phobia that has demonstrated adequate reliability, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity. However, research has yet to address whether this measure functions equivalently in (a) individuals with and without a diagnosis of social phobia and (b) males and females. Evaluating measurement equivalence/invariance is necessary in order to determine that the construct of social anxiety is interpreted similarly across these populations. The results of the current investig

Psychological adjustment and patient information in inflammatory bowel disease: development of two assessment instruments.

Research on the psychological adjustments that patients must make in living with inflammatory bowel disease, symptomatic and life-disrupting chronic illnesses, has been difficult to interpret because no standard measurement instruments of known reliability and validity have been available. Two studies are presented on the construction, validation and cross-validation of the two instruments measuring patient information and psychological adjustment in inflammatory bowel disease. Both scales were shown to be reliable on the basis of internal consistency. Convergent validity of the psychological

Protocol for a multi-site study of the effects of overdose prevention education with naloxone distribution program in Skåne County, Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Continuously high rates of overdose deaths in Sweden led to the decision by the Skåne County to initiate the first regional take-home naloxone program in Sweden. The project aims to study the effect of overdose prevention education and naloxone distribution on overdose mortality in Skåne County. Secondary outcome measures include non-fatal overdoses and overdose-related harm in the general population, as well as cohort-specific effects in study participants regarding overdoses, mortality and retention in naloxone program. METHODS: Implementation of a multi-site train-the-trainer c

Assessing social cognition and pragmatic language in adolescents with traumatic brain injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in children and adolescents can impair social cognition and communication skills but there are few assessment tools suitable for adolescents. The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT) uses professionally enacted audiovisual vignettes of everyday conversational exchanges and is a valid measure of social perception disorders in adults. This study examined its utility for assessing impairments in social cognition in a group of 16 adolescents with TBI, compared to a group of 16 typically developing (TD) adolescents. Adolescents with TBI were, on average, no diff

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Fear Questionnaire with social phobia patients.

BACKGROUND: The Fear Questionnaire is an internationally popular measure in anxiety disorder research, but its validity with social phobia patients has not been clearly demonstrated. METHOD: A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using the Fear Questionnaire responses of 122 social phobia patients. RESULTS: The results indicated that the proposed three-factor model of the scale (agoraphobia, social phobia, and blood/injury dimensions) provided a good fit to the data. CONCLUSIONS: These data provide strong support for the validity of the scale and for the multidimensional view of fears

Psychometric Validation of the Social Media Fatigue Scale and Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users Among Indonesian University Students.

BACKGROUND: While social media fatigue and social anxiety may shape individuals' patterns of social media use, validated instruments assessing these constructs remain limited in Southeast Asian contexts. METHODS: The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Social Media Fatigue Scale (SMFS) and the Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users (SAS-SMU) using confirmatory factor analysis. A total of 1012 Indonesian university students completed both instruments. Measurement invariance across gender and academic discipline was further examined. RESULTS: Item 13 of the SMFS was

The validity of the brief version of the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale.

The Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale [FNE; J. Consult. Clin. Psychol. 33 (1969) 448] is a commonly used measure of social anxiety. A brief version of the scale (FNEB) is available for convenient administration. Despite being widely advocated for use, the psychometric properties of the FNEB have not been evaluated with clinically anxious samples. The present study addressed the reliability and validity of the FNEB in a clinical sample of individuals with either social phobia (n = 82) or panic disorder (n = 99) presenting for treatment. Factor analysis supported the construct validity of the FN

Measures of Anxiety Disorder Symptoms in Adolescents.

This study examines select psychometric properties (i.e., internal reliability, and factorial, convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity) of three commonly-used measures of anxiety disorder symptoms in adolescents in the context of multi-trait, multi-method matrix analyses. A sample of 331 adolescents (age M = 17.1; 75.3% white; 71.0% female) completed three self-report scales that assess symptoms of separation anxiety, social anxiety, panic, and generalized anxiety, as well as measures of depression, experiential avoidance, and intolerance of uncertainty. Measures of panic disorder sym

A measure of state persecutory ideation for experimental studies.

Experimental research is increasingly important in developing the understanding of paranoid thinking. An assessment measure of persecutory ideation is necessary for such work. We report the reliability and validity of the first state measure of paranoia: The State Social Paranoia Scale. The items in the measure conform to a recent definition in which persecutory thinking has the 2 elements of feared harm and perpetrator intent. The measure was tested with 164 nonclinical participants and 21 individuals at high risk of psychosis with attenuated positive symptoms. The participants experienced a
