[Social vulnerability, social isolation of chronic psychiatric patients].

Social vulnerability and social isolation as to different, light and severe grades of chronically ill psychiatric patients were evaluated. A social vulnerability index, composed out of marital status, income, health, living conditions, occupation, and risk factors in childhood was used. The vulnerability of 64 severely chronically ill patients and of 84 chronically ill patients was assessed. According to their vulnerability, the patients were divided into a group of highly vulnerable and a group of less vulnerable patients. The social isolation of the two groups (severely chronically und chron

Social vulnerability and prenatal diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: There are limited data on how neighborhood-level risk factors affect the likelihood of having prenatal diagnosis. Neighborhood social vulnerability can be quantified and ranked using the social vulnerability index (SVI), a tool that measures the cumulative effect of external stressors in the local environment that may affect health outcomes. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between SVI and prenatal diagnosis among pregnant patients who received genetic counseling. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of all pregnant patients who had genetic counseling at

Genetic Vulnerability to Social Anxiety Disorder.

Most anxiety disorders 'run within families': people suffering from an anxiety disorder often have family members who are highly anxious as well. In this chapter, we explore recent work devoted to unraveling the complex interplay between genes and environment in the development of anxiety. We review studies focusing on the genetic vulnerability to develop social anxiety disorder (SAD), as SAD is one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders, with an early onset, a chronic course, and associated with significant life-long impairments. More insight into the development of SAD is thus of uttermost

[Social inequity, cognitive impairment and psychological vulnerability].

Frailty cannot be understood solely as a physical impairment. It is often closely linked to social inequity, cognitive impairment, and psychological vulnerability. These factors both contribute to frailty and are exacerbated by it, and together they influence overall mortality. This review calls for a holistic perspective when caring for individuals with frailty. Systematic approaches, such as proactive home visits and structured assessments using tools like the Clinical Frailty Scale and the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, may improve the identification and understanding of frailty.

Social Vulnerability, Wildfire Exposure, and Mental Health.

IMPORTANCE: Wildfires are projected to increase in frequency and severity, yet their mental health consequences, particularly the social factors associated with vulnerability, are not well understood. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the association between wildfire exposure and psychological distress and to assess the social factors that modify this association. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this longitudinal survey study, a probability-based internet panel of Los Angeles County residents in California was surveyed monthly, before and after the January 2025 wildfires, generating prefire meas

[HIV vulnerability in women at social risk].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate HIV/AIDS vulnerability by risk factors in women at social risk. METHODS: Study conducted in a sample of 178 female homemakers (n=101) and female health providers (n=77) from Antofagasta, Chile, in 20062007. Homemakers were considered at social risk. HIV vulnerability was estimated through a 21-item instrument comprising three domains: gender roles; relationship with the partner; and attitude toward condom use. For determining the relative weight of each dimension to total vulnerability a multiple regression analysis was carried out using the instrument's total score as

Intersection of Social Vulnerability, Social Drivers, and Race on Hypertension Control.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a leading contributor to morbidity and mortality, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. We examined the intersection of social vulnerability and race on blood pressure (BP) control. METHODS: We examined 76,600 patients with hypertension in Western New York State. BP control was defined according to the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set as BP<140/90 mmHg. We utilized social vulnerability index (SVI) scores based on each patient's census tract. Log-binomial regression was used to estimate the independent effects of demographic character

The structure of vulnerabilities for social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder symptoms are generally proposed to be related to broad temperamental vulnerabilities (e.g., a low level of approach and high level of avoidance temperament), specific psychological vulnerabilities (e.g., fears of negative and positive evaluation), and additional disorders (e.g., major depressive disorder). However, existing tests of such a model have either not considered depressive symptoms or relied on samples of undergraduates. We examined these and related questions via a latent variable model in a large dataset (N=2253) that combined participants across a variety o

Inspecting Vulnerability to Depression From Social Media Affect.

Affect describes a person's feelings or emotions in reaction to stimuli, and affective expressions were found to be related to depression in social media. This study examined the longitudinal pattern of affect on a popular Chinese social media platform: Weibo. We collected 1,664 Chinese Weibo users' self-reported CES-D scores via surveys and 3 years' worth of Weibo posts preceding the surveys. First, we visualized participants' social media affect and found evidence of cognitive vulnerability indicated by affect patterns: Users with high depression symptoms tended to use not only more negative

Stress and social isolation increase vulnerability to stroke.

Stress is a universal experience for living organisms. Under many circumstances activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis is an adaptive response to stress. However, when stress or HPA activation is prolonged or its timing immediately precedes or coincides with an ongoing neurodegenerative process, the results can be deleterious. A causal relationship among stress, HPA axis activity, and stroke outcome exists. Stress is one of many potential triggers of ischemic stroke and sustained elevations in glucocorticoids compromise neuronal survival following an ischemic attack. Indee

Misappropriating vulnerability: Assessing the utility of the social vulnerability index as a predictor of firearm violence.

The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), a measure designed to gauge a community's resilience to natural disasters, such as hurricanes or wildfires, has been increasingly adopted in community violence research to identify places at risk of firearm-related harms. We take stock of recent research on social vulnerability and critically assess the conceptual and empirical validity of the SVI in the context of community firearm violence. We first compare the measurement properties of the SVI with a conventional index of concentrated disadvantage (CDI) commonplace in social science research on communit

Cognitive vulnerability and social support among aging women caregivers.

This 15-year longitudinal study examined the association between family caregiving and cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults in South Korea, focusing on gender differences and the moderating role of social support. Using data from 6,481 participants in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2006-2020), cognitive function was assessed with the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE). Family caregiving experience was defined as reporting caregiving in at least two survey waves between 2006 and 2020. Repeated caregiving exposure was associated with lower cognitive performan

Area deprivation, social vulnerability, and post-pregnancy blood pressure.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is a critical test of women's cardiovascular risk. Structural factors may influence long-term cardiovascular health beyond individual, social experiences. We examined associations of neighborhood-level deprivation and individual-level social vulnerability (SV) during pregnancy with postpartum blood pressure (BP). METHODS: This secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study used data from 3,728 nulliparous women in the nuMoM2b-HHS cohort followed from early pregnancy to 2-7 years post-delivery (Mage: 30.8 years, 65% non-Hispanic White, 14% with adverse pregnancy outco

Social Vulnerability and Quality of Life in Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDoH) impact surgical outcomes, risk-adjusted prognoses, and overall health. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) measures SDoH based on 16 social factors. This study evaluates the impact of social vulnerability on the quality of life of those living with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). METHODS: A retrospective cohort review of 657 patients at a single institution. CRS patients with cystic fibrosis, nasal obstruction, and nasal cancer were excluded. Baseline covariates, including SNOT-22 scores, sex, and history of surgery, were collected. SVI was ca

Selective vulnerability of parvocellular oxytocin neurons in social dysfunction.

Selective vulnerability offers a conceptual framework for understanding neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, where specific neuronal types are selectively affected and adjacent ones are spared. However, the applicability of this framework to neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly those characterized by atypical social behaviors, such as autism spectrum disorder, remains uncertain. Here we show that an embryonic disturbance, known to induce social dysfunction in male mice, preferentially impaired the gene expression crucial for neural functions in parvocellular oxytocin
