Socioeconomic Disparities in Health Behaviors.

The inverse relationships between socioeconomic status (SES) and unhealthy behaviors such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition have been well demonstrated empirically but encompass diverse underlying causal mechanisms. These mechanisms have special theoretical importance because disparities in health behaviors, unlike disparities in many other components of health, involve something more than the ability to use income to purchase good health. Based on a review of broad literatures in sociology, economics, and public health, we classify explanations of higher smoking, lower e

Socioeconomic disparities and health: impacts and pathways.

Growing socioeconomic disparity is a global concern, as it could affect population health. The author and colleagues have investigated the health impacts of socioeconomic disparities as well as the pathways that underlie those disparities. Our meta-analysis found that a large population has risks of mortality and poor self-rated health that are attributable to income inequality. The study results also suggested the existence of threshold effects (ie, a threshold of income inequality over which the adverse impacts on health increase), period effects (ie, the potential for larger impacts in late

Health insurance and socioeconomic disparities in childhood caries.

Social inequalities are strongly associated with disparities in oral health, particularly in the development of childhood caries. This 4-year cohort study analyzed the impact of socioeconomic status (SES)- defined on the basis of the health insurance type- on the prevalence, treatment, and recurrence of dental caries in children. A total of 198 children (21 with social insurance, 177 with private insurance) were included. Caries prevalence at baseline was significantly higher in children with social insurance (95 % with >4 caries) compared to those with private insurance (29 % with >4 caries).

Racial and Socioeconomic Health Disparities in Peripheral Artery Disease.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a progressive atherosclerotic disease that causes lower extremity arterial stenosis or occlusion. Patients with PAD are at increased risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, limitations in ambulation, and amputation. Despite the advances in medicine and technology, the outcomes from PAD, including critical limb-threatening ischemia, acute limb ischemia amputation, and mortality, remain increased among specific racial and ethnic groups that have been historically marginalized in America, including Black, Hispanic, and American Indian individuals in the United St

Childhood obesity's influence on socioeconomic disparities in young adolescents' mental health.

PURPOSE: We investigated whether socioeconomic inequalities in young adolescents' mental health are partially due to the unequal distribution of childhood obesity across socioeconomic positions (SEP), i.e. differential exposure, or due to the effect of obesity on mental health being more detrimental among certain SEPs, i.e. differential impact. METHODS: We studied 4660 participants of the Generation R study, a population-based study in the Netherlands. SEP was estimated by mother's education and household income at age five of the child. We estimated the contribution of the mediating and mode

Early origins of health disparities: burden of infection, health, and socioeconomic status in U.S. children.

Recent work in biodemography has suggested that lifetime exposure to infection and inflammation may be an important determinant of later-life morbidity and mortality. Early exposure to infections during critical periods can predispose individuals to chronic disease, in part through the reallocation of energy away from development needed for immune and inflammatory responses. Furthermore, markers of inflammation are known to vary by socioeconomic status in adults and may contribute to overall socioeconomic health inequalities, but little is known about how the sources of this inflammation diffe

Race/ethnicity, gender, and monitoring socioeconomic gradients in health: a comparison of area-based socioeconomic measures--the public health disparities geocoding project.

Use of multilevel frameworks and area-based socioeconomic measures (ABSMs) for public health monitoring can potentially overcome the absence of socioeconomic data in most US public health surveillance systems. To assess whether ABSMs can meaningfully be used for diverse race/ethnicity-gender groups, we geocoded and linked public health surveillance data from Massachusetts and Rhode Island to 1990 block group, tract, and zip code ABSMs. Outcomes comprised death, birth, cancer incidence, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, childhood lead poisoning, and nonfatal weapons-related injurie

Health and Economic Value of Eliminating Socioeconomic Disparities in US Youth Physical Activity.

IMPORTANCE: There are considerable socioeconomic status (SES) disparities in youth physical activity (PA) levels. For example, studies show that lower-SES youth are less active, have lower participation in organized sports and physical education classes, and have more limited access to PA equipment. OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential public health and economic effects of eliminating disparities in PA levels among US youth SES groups. DESIGN AND SETTING: An agent-based model representing all 6- to 17-year-old children in the US was used to simulate the epidemiological, clinical, and econom

Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities in Preconception Health Risk Factors and Access to Care.

Background: Black birthing people have significantly higher risks of maternal mortality and morbidity compared with White people. Preconception chronic conditions increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, yet little is known about disparities in preconception health. This study applies an intersectional framework to examine the simultaneous contributions of racial marginalization and economic deprivation in determining disparities in preconception risk factors and access to care. Methods: Using data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, 2016-2020 (N = 123,697), we evalua

Socioeconomic Factors and Health Disparities Among North Korean Refugee Populations.

IMPORTANCE: Conventional frameworks often attribute migrant health disparities to language barriers, legal exclusion, or socioeconomic deprivation. However, it remains unclear whether health inequities persist when these structural barriers are removed. Isolating the impact of historical and intergenerational trauma requires examining a unique minoritized population that shares full citizenship and linguistic heritage with the host society. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the explanatory power of conventional demographic, socioeconomic, and family determinants on health disparities in a fully integrat

Inequitable Utilization of Neonatal Health Services in Southwest Ethiopia: The Effects of Socioeconomic Disparities.

Low levels of neonatal health services utilization and high neonatal deaths are often concentrated among socially and economically disadvantaged groups, especially in low-income countries. Therefore the aim of this study was to assess inequity in the use of neonatal health services in Southwest Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 8 districts located in Jimma Zone, Southwest Ethiopia from 19 March to 28 April 2018. A total of 835 mothers were included in the study with systematic random sampling. Principal component analysis was conducted to develop wealth quintil

Disparities in melanoma-specific mortality by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and health care systems.

BACKGROUND: Despite encouraging trends in survival, sociodemographic inequalities persist among patients with melanoma. OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify the effect of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and health care systems on melanoma-specific mortality within an insured population of patients. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort study, we identified insured adults diagnosed with Stage I to IV melanoma from January 1, 2009, to December 31, 2014, followed through 2017, from the California Cancer Registry. We compared melanoma-specific mortality between insured patients diagnosed withi

Breastfeeding may lessen socioeconomic disparities in child health through differences in the infant gut microbiome.

Lower familial socioeconomic status (SES) is linked to increased childhood disease risk. Since SES has no inherent biological basis, identifying how it becomes physiologically embedded is essential for equitable intervention. Using data from the Canadian CHILD birth cohort (n = 2,752) with replication in the Danish Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood 2010 (COPSAC2010) cohort (n = 681), we analyze modifiable pathways linking SES to child health and find that the infant gut microbiota plays a key mediating role. Breastfeeding is associated with a stabilized infant microbiota, b

Socioeconomic position, health behaviors, and racial disparities in cause-specific infant mortality in Michigan, USA.

OBJECTIVES: Studies about racial disparities in infant mortality suggest that racial differences in socioeconomic position (SEP) and maternal risk behaviors explain some, but not all, excess infant mortality among Blacks relative to non-Hispanic Whites. We examined the contribution of these to disparities in specific causes of infant mortality. METHODS: We analyzed data about 2,087,191 mother-child dyads in Michigan between 1989 and 2005. First, we calculated crude Black-White infant mortality ratios independently and by specific cause of death. Second, we fit multivariable Poisson regression

Neighborhood green space and psychological distress: a longitudinal study of socioeconomic disparities in mental health outcomes.

Evidence suggests that neighborhood green space is associated with improvements in mental health. However, few studies have simultaneously considered both the risky and protective dimensions of green space in relation to psychological distress. Moreover, whether these spaces contribute to narrowing gaps in mental health problems across different social groups remains insufficiently understood. We aimed to examine the longitudinal association between neighborhood green space and psychological distress in adults, taking into account socioeconomic disparities. We used data from the Millennium Coh
