Socioeconomic Risk Factors in Neurocysticercosis.

NCC is responsible for around 30% of active epilepsy in endemic countries such as India. Knowing socioeconomic factors associated with NCC can help in decreasing the incidence of this disease. We intend to study socioeconomic risk factors in NCC patients and how these factors are different from patients without NCC. Consecutive 100 adult patients of NCC presenting to neurology services with probable NCC (symptomatic or asymptomatic) along with age- and sex-matched controls were interviewed with preset proforma and then data was compiled and analyzed statistically. The NCC group had significant

Socioeconomic factors in cancer in Sweden.

It is well known that certain cancers have shown clustering in socioeconomic groups, but limited data are available on recent results and time trends in such clustering. We determined standardized incidence ratios (SIR) for cancer, adjusted for age, period, region, parity and age at first childbirth among men and women in 6 socioeconomic groups based on the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. Persons had to be identified with the same socioeconomic status in the census of years 1960 and 1970, or of years 1960, 1970 and 1980; the comparison group was all people according to the same censuses. Cance

Racial and socioeconomic factors in glomerular disease.

The influence of racial and socioeconomic factors on the incidence, prognosis, and response to therapy of many diseases has long been noted. Although glomerular diseases comprise 10% to over 16% of the dialysis and renal transplant populations, respectively, only recently have racial and socioeconomic factors been evaluated. Several glomerular diseases are associated with a striking African-American predominance. These include idiopathic focal sclerosis, and especially its collapsing variant, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated nephropathy, and severe lupus nephritis. In many of thes

[Effect of socioeconomic factors on twin pregnancy].

A material of 336 mothers of twins was divided into four groups on the basis of socioeconomic background. On average, mothers belonging to the first social class delivered at 38.2 +/- 1.6 week of pregnancy and their newborn weighed more than those in other social classes. Careful follow-up at outpatient maternity clinics is warranted in the case of expectant mothers of twins belonging to the third or fourth social class.

Geographic and Socioeconomic Factors on Survival in Esthesioneuroblastoma.

OBJECTIVES: Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is a rare sinonasal malignancy with little known regarding how regional and socioeconomic differences in the United States alter disease survival. The aim of this study is to explore the geographic difference in clinical features, socioeconomic factors, and survival outcomes of ENB patients. METHODS: ENB cases were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry from 1975-2016. Patient data were stratified based on geographical location and comparative analyses of socioeconomic features, disease characteristics, and survival patt

Socioeconomic Factors and Survival of Multiple Myeloma Patients.

BackgroundOutcome of Multiple Myeloma (MM) patients has improved as the result of the introduction of novel medications and use of autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation. However, this improvement comes at the expense of increased financial burden. It is largely unknown if socioeconomic factors influence MM survival.MethodsWe used the National Cancer Database, a database that houses data on 70% of cancer patients in the US, to evaluate the effect of socioeconomic factors on the survival of 117,926 MM patients diagnosed between 2005 and 2014.ResultsPatients aged ≥65 years who were privat

Socioeconomic factors and mortality in diastolic heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Mortality in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF) has remained stable over recent decades. Few studies have explored prognostic characteristics specifically in HFPEF, and none of them has assessed the potential impact of socioeconomic factors. We aimed to evaluate the impact of socioeconomic factors on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in HFPEF patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the French ODIN cohort. All patients with heart failure and a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) > 45%, included in ODIN between July 2007 and Ju

Socioeconomic Factors Affecting Visual Acuity in Cataract Camps.

BACKGROUND: Cataracts are the leading cause of reversible blindness worldwide. Though temporary and resource-intensive, cataract camps provide large-scale treatment of the condition. This study sought to determine socioeconomic factors that affect short-term improvements in visual acuity observed in cataract camps across 17 countries. METHODS: This observational study represents 52 camps in 17 low- and middle-income countries. Mixed-effects linear regression models were used to analyze associations between changes in LogMAR score of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) one to four days post-opera

Socioeconomic factors predict successful supervised exercise therapy completion.

OBJECTIVE: Supervised exercise therapy (SET) for patients with intermittent claudication (IC) can lower the risk of progression to chronic limb-threatening ischemia and amputation, while preserving and restoring functional status. Despite supporting evidence, it remains underutilized, and among those who initiate programs, attrition rates are extremely high. We hypothesize that socioeconomic factors may represent significant barriers to SET completion. METHODS: Patients with IC referred to SET at a multi-hospital, single-institution health care system (2018-2022) from a prospectively maintain

Socioeconomic factors and low birth weight in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) is a public health problem linked to lack of equity in populations. Despite efforts to decrease the proportion of newborns with LBW, success has been quite limited. In recent years, studies focused on explaining how social factors influence this problem have shown that populations with greater inequities have a greater proportion of newborns with LBW. METHODS: The objective was to describe socioeconomic factors related to LBW adjusted by demographic, reproductive and health services variables in Mexico City. A case-control study was carried out in three hosp

Socioeconomic status, lifestyle factors and oral premalignant lesions.

Several studies have suggested that low socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with a higher risk of oral cancer, but the association with oral premalignant lesions has not yet been explored. The aim of this study was to examine the association of education, occupation, income and SES index with oral premalignant lesions. A case-control study was conducted with data from the baseline screening of a randomized oral cancer screening trial in Kerala, India. There were a total of 927 oral leukoplakia, 170 oral submucous fibrosis, 100 erythroplakia and 115 multiple oral premalignant lesion cases

Socioeconomic disparities in risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Despite a general decline in mortality rates in recent decades, these rates are substantially higher among lower socioeconomic groups. To determine target groups for preventive health promotion programs, the prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease by socioeconomic group in Canadian adults aged 20 to 69 years was examined through comparison of estimates from the 1978-79 Canada Health Survey, the 1981 Canada Fitness Survey and the labour force smoking surveys of 1975 and 1983. Level of education was used as a measure of socioeconomic status. The risk factors considered were cigaret
