PURPOSE: This study investigates the relationship between environmental quality and medical sociology in hospitals and suggests a conceptual framework for understanding their interrelation.
BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of environmental properties in the sociological approach to users' health and the role of medical sociology research in the design of hospital environments, few studies have been conducted in the field of hospital environments and medical sociology interrelation. INTRODUCTION: Inline skating is becoming more and more popular all over the world. This results in a rapid increase in sports injuries. The aim of our study was to analyse injury patterns and injury causes as well as the influence of the social status on possessing and using protective equipment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recorded and evaluated 76 accidents in our outpatient department by means of standardised questionnaires over a period of 18 months. We checked the direct circumstances of the accident, social situation and aspects of the family's social status.

Female circumcision is a very old tradition still widely practised in Africa. The extent of female circumcision ranges from resection of the clitoridal prepuce (= sunnitic circumcision) to resection of labia minora and majora as well as clitoridectomy (= pharaonic circumcision). Wound approximation by sutures or scar contraction may cause partial closure of the vaginal orifice (= infibulation). Historical, sociological as well as medical aspects are discussed and reconstructive procedures described.

Based on qualitative data of an upper-secondary school in Sweden's primary elite community, Djursholm, I propose how medical diagnosis of students as dyslexics contributes to consecrating them by offering a short cut to successful performance, while at the same time reproducing differences between social classes.
