Sodium chloride transport of normal and dietary enlarged rat cecum in vitro.

Sodium chloride transport across isolated cecum mucosa was investigated in normal rats and rats with adaptive cecum growth induced by dietary polyethylene glycol (PEG). The normal cecum absorbed Cl in excess of Na with a small short-circuit current (ISC). Dietary adaptation led to large equivalent increments of Na and Cl net absorption without adequate ISC change. Inhibitor studies (mucosal amiloride 10(-3) and 10(-4) M; mucosal 4, 4-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2-disulfonic acid 5 x 10(-5) M; serosal furosemide 10(-3) M; serosal ouabain 10(-3) M) suggested that normal cecal NaCl absorption invo

Dietary Salt (Sodium Chloride) Requirement and Adverse Effects of Salt Restriction in Humans.

Inevitable sodium loss under sodium restriction must not be construed as evidence for the estimated average requirement (EAR) for sodium (Na) in humans. We conducted human mineral balance studies to determine the EAR for some minerals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Zn, Fe, Cu and Mn). Na concentration in arm sweat was low while those of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) were high, during relatively heavy bicycle-ergometer exercise under relatively low Na intake (100 mmol/d). This suggests that Na was released from the bone, the sole pool of Na, with Ca and Mg. Additionally, the negative balances of Ca and M

Restricted dietary chloride with sodium bicarbonate supplementation for Holstein cows in early lactation.

Over 2 wk, beginning 3 wk postpartum, daily changes of feed and water intake and milk production and composition were monitored in 25 cows allotted randomly among four dietary treatment groups differing in sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and ad libitum supplementation by salt block. The basic complete diet was 54% corn silage, 27% shelled corn, and 16% soybean meal, dry basis. The four dietary treatments were control, .42% chloride; low, .10% chloride; low plus salt block, complete ration same as low with ad libitum salt block consumption; and control plus .7% sodium bicarbonate. Development of an animal model of nephrocalcinosis via selective dietary sodium and chloride depletion.

BACKGROUND: Nephrocalcinosis (NC) is an important clinical problem seen in critically ill preterm neonates treated with loop diuretics. No reliable animal models are available to study the pathogenesis of NC in preterm infants. The purpose of this study was to develop a reproducible and clinically relevant animal model of NC for these patients and to explore the impact of extracellular fluid (ECF) volume contraction induced by sodium and chloride depletion in this process. METHODS: Three-week-old weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets deficient in either chloride or sodium or both. A sub

Dietary sodium chloride and potassium have effects on the pathophysiology of hypertension in humans and animals.

A diet high in NaCl can raise blood pressure in susceptible people and animals, probably by similar mechanisms. The possibly harmful effects of a high-NaCl diet are not unexpected because both prehistoric humans and mammals evolved in a low-NaCl environment. Evolutionary forces molded mammals to adapt well to a low sodium intake; modern high NaCl intakes go against this adaptation. A high-NaCl diet can cause premature mortality by raising blood pressure in susceptible people. We have new evidence that in hypertension, a high-NaCl diet can cause a great increase in mortality even though it does

Protective effects of dietary potassium chloride on hemodynamics of Dahl salt-sensitive rats in response to chronic administration of sodium chloride.

BACKGROUND: Dietary potassium supplementation decreases blood pressure and prevents strokes in humans, and prevents strokes and renal damage in Dahl salt-sensitive (DSS) rats. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of various concentrations of dietary potassium chloride (KCl) on the hemodynamics of Dahl salt-resistant (DSR) and DSS rats receiving a 1% sodium chloride (NaCl) diet for 8 months, to determine whether there is an optimal dietary concentration of KCl that minimizes increases in blood pressure and causes least impairment of blood flow in the brain and kidneys. Interactive effects of dietary sodium and chloride on the incidence of spontaneous cardiomyopathy (round heart) in turkeys.

Two pen trials were conducted in Utah, altitude 1,630 m, with Large White female turkey poults to evaluate effects of dietary Na and chloride (Cl) concentrations on live performance and deaths caused by spontaneous cardiomyopathy (STC, "round heart") from 0 to 35 d of age. A randomized block 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with four replicate pens per treatment was used. Pen size was 3.8 x 5.6 m. In each trial, four starter diets were formulated from a common basal diet (corn-soy-meat) to obtain the following sodium and chloride concentrations: High Na (0.24%):High Cl (0.40%); High Na (0.24%):Low

Effects of long-term air jet noise and dietary sodium chloride in borderline hypertensive rats.

The hypothesis that simultaneous exposure to a high (8%) sodium chloride diet and behavioral stress (air jet noise) would act synergistically to increase blood pressure was investigated in male borderline hypertensive rats. Rats were fed either a 1% or an 8% sodium chloride diet beginning at 6 weeks of age. Rats in the Air Noise condition were restrained and exposed to random blasts of air jet noise for 2 h/d, 5 d/wk, from 7 to 17 weeks of age. Controls either were placed in identical restrainers and test chambers but not exposed to air jet noise (Restrained Control) or were left undisturbed (

Effects of Dietary Sodium and Chloride on Slaughter Performance, Digestive Tract Development and Tibia Mineralization of Geese.

This study evaluated the slaughter performance, digestive tract development and tibia mineralization effects of sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) on geese. Four hundred and thirty-four male geese at 29 days were randomly assigned into nine groups with six replicates (eight in each). The experiment employed a 3 × 3 factorial design, with two instances each of three Na levels (0.10%, 0.15%, and 0.20%) and three Cl levels (0.15%, 0.20%, and 0.25%). All experimental birds were husbanded for 42 days. Dietary Na and Cl levels and their interactions (Na ×Cl) had no significant effect on the slaughter, br

Influence of an enriched dietary sodium chloride regime during gestation and suckling and post-natally on the ontogeny of hypertension in the rat.

Brattleboro rats without diabetes insipidus were subjected to sodium chloride enrichment (20-fold increase in dietary salt) at various stages of their development. Salt supplementation in the adult rat produced higher systolic blood pressure (SBP), particularly in males (142 +/- 3 versus 110 +/- 3 mmHg in control. The blood pressures of females on salt-supplemented diets during pregnancy decreased from 136 +/- 1 to 121 +/- 2 mmHg, although throughout this period the blood pressures for these rats were greater than for the control pregnant rats. Pregnant females on salt-supplemented diets also

The optimal dietary sodium and chloride level for broiler chicks fed a corn-soybean meal diet between 1 and 21 d of age.

The experiment was conducted to estimate the ideal dietary sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) level for broilers during day 1 to 21 using a corn-soybean meal diet under a dietary Na:Cl ratio of 1:1. A total of 490 1-d-old Arbor Acres male broilers were randomly allotted by body weight to one of seven treatments in a completely randomized design. Each treatment consisted of seven replicate cages with 10 chicks per cage. Broilers were fed a Na and Cl-unsupplemented corn-soybean meal basal diet (control, containing 0.02% Na and 0.08% Cl) and the Na and Cl-supplemented basal diets containing 0.14%, 0.2

The Proportion of Dietary Salt Replaced With Potassium-Enriched Salt in the SSaSS: Implications for Scale-Up.

BACKGROUND: The SSaSS (Salt Substitute and Stroke Study) recently reported definitive effects of a potassium-enriched salt on cardiovascular outcomes and death. Quantifying the amount of potassium-enriched salt used by trial participants is important for understanding the magnitude of the effect of potassium-enriched salt on risk reduction and how population-wide scale-up might be achieved. METHODS: Baseline and annual 24-hour urine samples were collected from subgroups of participants in SSaSS throughout the 5-year follow-up. The mean difference in 24-hour potassium excretion between the 2 g

Differential cardiovascular impacts of sodium salts: unveiling the distinct roles of sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate-consequences for heart failure patients.

Misconceptions surrounding sodium compounds, particularly the interchangeable use of sodium and sodium chloride (table salt), persist within the medical community, influencing dietary recommendations and patient management especially in heart failure (HF) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This narrative review aims to dissect these misconceptions and discusses the physiological impacts of sodium, chloride, and sodium bicarbonate on cardiovascular (CV) physiology. The conflation of sodium and sodium chloride in dietary recommendations has obscured critical differences in their physiol

Sodium-chloride-induced protection in nephrotoxic acute renal failure: independence from renin.

It has been shown that the severity of experimentally induced acute renal failure (ARF) is inversely related to dietary sodium chloride intake, and the effects have been attributed to the concurrent changes in renal renin. In the current study, renal renin of rats was increased by chronic sodium deprivation and decreased by chronic sodium loading and DOCA administration. In two nephrotoxic models (mercuric chloride, uranyl nitrate), giving previously sodium-deprived rats 1% sodium chloride to drink for 48 hours prior to ARF induction greatly attenuated the severity without any reduction in the

Myopia, Sodium Chloride, and Vitreous Fluid Imbalance: A Nutritional Epidemiology Perspective.

Theories of myopia etiology based on near work and lack of outdoor exposure have had inconsistent support and have not prevented the rising prevalence of global myopia. New scientific theories in the cause and prevention of myopia are needed. Myopia prevalence is low in native people consuming traditional diets lacking in sodium chloride, and nutritional epidemiological evidence supports the association of rising myopia prevalence with dietary sodium intake. East Asian populations have among the highest rates of myopia associated with high dietary sodium. Similar associations of sodium and ris
