Sodium nitrite detection in costal cartilage and vitreous humor - Case report of fatal poisoning with sodium nitrite.

Medico-legal case reports very rarely describe sodium nitrite poisonings, but when they do most often they describe fatal suicide attempts. The case report presents a suicidal attempt with sodium nitrite of unknown provenance and the first attempt to detect nitrite ions in costal cartilage and vitreous humor samples. In February 2020, the corpse of a 23-year-old man was revealed in a student apartment. According to the prosecutor's office, the deceased had an incomplete IT (Information Technology) degree. The onsite inspection revealed the body on the bathroom floor, an opened container with s

[Effect of sodium nitrite on Trichomonas vaginalis].

We have investigated the action of sodium nitrite on the growth and morphologic changes of T. vaginalis and on the treatment of subcutaneous abscess by trichomonad in mice. Sodium nitrite inhibited the growth of metronidazole-sensitive KT9 isolate and metronidazole-resistant CDC85 strain of T. vaginalis as concentration of 6 mM and 10 mM, respectively. Intraperitoneal injection of sodium nitrite (70 micrograms, 100 micrograms, 130 micrograms/g body weight) did not reduce the size of abscess produced by subcutaneous inoculation of T. vaginalis in mice. T. vaginalis, treated with sodium nitrite

Suicide by sodium nitrite: Autopsy case report.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide by sodium nitrite poisoning (SNP) is not common. In the last decade, an increase in the number of suicides caused by SNP was observed. CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old female was found dead in her apartment. Four cups with a yellowish liquid and a scale for precise measurement were found at the scene. Also, an empty plastic bag labeled "Sodium Nitrite NaNO2". In the external examination, general signs of asphyxia were noticed. Bluish and slightly brownish hypostasis, which was prominent on the face and thighs, was present. The blood and all tissues were somewhat darker in appe

Sodium nitrite prevents impaired postnatal alveolar development.

Deficient nitric oxide (NO) signaling plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD); however, clinical trials of inhaled NO (iNO) as a preventive therapy for BPD have shown little to no benefit. A biochemical obstacle to effective NO-based therapy relates to the high reactivity of NO, potentially leading to harmful oxidation and nitration. Hypothesizing that nitrite-based therapy has less potential to produce adverse reactions, we compared the preventive effects of sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and iNO on lung morphology, NO content and signaling, S-nitrosothiols (SNOs

Severe Methemoglobinemia due to Sodium Nitrite Poisoning.

Case. We report a case of severe methemoglobinemia due to sodium nitrite poisoning. A 28-year-old man was brought to our emergency department because of transient loss of consciousness and cyanosis. He was immediately intubated and ventilated with 100% oxygen. A blood test revealed a methemoglobin level of 92.5%. Outcome. We treated the patient with gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and methylene blue (2 mg/kg) administered intravenously. Soon after receiving methylene blue, his cyanosis resolved and the methemoglobin level began to decrease. After relocation to the intensive care unit, his

Suicide by sodium nitrite ingestion: a systematic review.

Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is an odorless inorganic compound appearing as a yellowish to white powder, primarily used as a food additive. An alarming increasing trend in suicides involving NaNO2 ingestion has been recently observed. The aim of this study is to present a systematic review of intentional NaNO2 poisonings, focusing on the epidemiological characteristics of the victims, their psychiatric history, the setting and circumstances of death, as well as autopsy, histological and toxicological results. A total of 24 papers satisfied the inclusion criteria reporting 94 suicides by NaNO2 ingest

The antidotal action of sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate against cyanide poisoning.

The combination of sodium thiosulfate and sodium nitrite has been used in the United States since the 1930s as the primary antidote for cyanide intoxication. Although this combination was shown to exhibit much greater efficacy than either ingredient alone, the two compounds could not be used prophylactically because each exhibits a number of side effects. This review discusses the pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology of the individual agents, and their combination.

Effect of Sodium Chloride, Sodium Nitrite and Sodium Nitrate on the Infectivity of Hepatitis E Virus.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection can cause acute and chronic hepatitis in humans. The zoonotic HEV genotype 3, which is highly prevalent in Europe, is mainly transmitted by consumption of raw meat and raw meat products produced from infected pigs or wild boars. High salt concentrations represent an important measure to preserve meat products and to inactivate foodborne pathogens. Here, an HEV preparation in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was subjected to different salt concentrations and the remaining infectivity was measured in a cell culture assay. Treatments with up to 20% sodium chloride

Fatal Sodium Nitrite Poisoning: Key Considerations for Prehospital Providers.

Sodium nitrite is a powerful oxidizing agent that causes hypotension and limits oxygen transport and delivery in the body through the formation of methemoglobin. Clinical manifestations can include cyanosis, hypoxia, altered consciousness, dysrhythmias, and death. The majority of reports on sodium nitrite poisonings have been the result of unintentional exposures. We report a case of an intentional fatal overdose of sodium nitrite. A 17-year-old female reportedly drank approximately one tablespoon of sodium nitrite in a self-harm attempt. The patient was hypotensive and cyanotic upon EMS arriv

Acute cyanide intoxication treated with a combination of hydroxycobalamin, sodium nitrite, and sodium thiosulfate.

An 80-year-old diabetic patient was admitted to the hospital because of sudden unconsciousness and severe metabolic acidosis. His son reported the possibility of cyanide poisoning. Clinical data and the detection of cyanide in blood and gastric material confirmed this possibility. Supportive therapy and the following antidotes--sodium nitrite two doses 300 mg i.v., sodium thiosulfate 3 g i.v., and hydroxocobalamin 4 g in 24 hours--were administered immediately and the patient completely recovered in 48 hours. Our observations suggest that timely and appropriate use of antidotes for cyanide int

Suicide of an adolescent girl with sodium nitrite ordered on the internet.

Nitrites are commonly used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. Recently, they have been identified in cases of voluntary intoxication. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl who was found lifeless on her bed next to a glass containing a white powder and a bottle containing a white powder with a moistened appearance. External examination and autopsy revealed a nonspecific asphyxia syndrome, which was confirmed by the pathological analysis. Analysis of the samples revealed metoclopramide in the peripheral blood at a concentration of 0.402 mg/L (LC-HRMS). An analysis of the ga

Increasing use of sodium nitrite in suicides-an emerging trend.

Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is a compound with broad practical applications in food preservation, automotive maintenance, and animal control. Sodium nitrite is also potentially fatal when ingested, as it interferes with the ability of red blood cells to transport oxygen. While incidents of accidental consumption have been reported in the literature, case reports of sodium nitrite being used as a pharmacological suicide agent are becoming more frequent. Therefore, a study was undertaken to evaluate trends in sodium nitrite deaths in South Australia between 2000 and 2019. All cases of fatal sodium ni

Presumptive identification of nitrite by Griess reagent test strips-Case reports of fatal poisoning with sodium nitrite.

The intentional ingestion of sodium nitrite causes toxicity by inducing methemoglobinemia, which can lead to cyanosis, hypotension and death. The number of reported suicide cases has significantly increased in the past 10 years as sodium nitrite is readily available online. The traditional tests for nitrite and nitrate require specialized detection methods which are not typically available in a postmortem toxicology laboratory. This rise in sodium nitrite overdose cases indicates the need for a simple, quick test for suspected nitrite toxicity. In this study, a common Griess reagent color test

Sodium Nitrite Intoxication and Death: Summarizing Evidence to Facilitate Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Over the years, forensic pathology has registered the spread of new methods of suicide, such as the ingestion of sodium nitrite. Sodium nitrite causes increased methemoglobin, resulting in systemic hypoxia, metabolic acidosis, and cyanosis. Since sodium nitrite is a preservative, the ingestion of foods containing an excessive amount of this substance can also cause acute intoxication up to death. The present review is aimed at guiding health professionals in the identification and management of sodium-nitrite-related intoxications and deaths. METHODS: A systematic literature searc

Sodium thiosulfate fails to reduce nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether sodium thiosulfate (STS) produces a clinically significant decline in sodium nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia in an in-vitro model. METHODS: This was an in-vitro, controlled study where methemoglobinemia was induced by the addition of sodium nitrite (0.4 mg/mL) to 35-mL aliquots of blood obtained from ten healthy volunteers. Methemoglobin (MetHb) concentrations were measured at 5-minute intervals for 30 minutes by co-oximetry, and each aliquot was then subdivided into six 5-mL samples (time zero). Sample 1 served as control. The remaining samples received ser
