Paratesticular soft tissue neoplasms.

Paratesticular soft tissue tumors are uncommon neoplasms that may present significant challenges for the pathologist and clinician. This article reviews the incidence of these rare tumors, and on the common benign and malignant entities that occur in this location. Key points in differential diagnosis are emphasized. The grading, staging, and management of patients with paratesticular sarcomas is also discussed.

CT of soft-tissue neoplasms.

The computed tomographic scans (CT) of 84 patients with untreated soft-tissue neoplasms were studied, 75 with primary and nine with secondary lesions. Each scan was evaluated using several criteria: homogeneity and density, presence and type of calcification, presence of bony destruction, involvement of multiple muscle groups, definition of adjacent fat, border definition, and vessel or nerve involvement. CT demonstrated the lesion in all 84 patients and showed excellent anatomic detail in 64 of the 75 patients with primary neoplasms. CT did not differentiate vessel or nerve entrapment from ne

Clinicopathological Study of Soft Tissue Neoplasms.

Background Soft tissue neoplasm is a broad term referring to tumors that can arise from various tissues, including muscle, tendons, fat, nerves, and lymphatic and blood vessels. These neoplasms may be either benign or malignant, with classification based on the tissue of origin and tumor behavior. The aim of this study was to assess the relative frequency of soft tissue neoplasms among all neoplasms, determine the incidence of benign and malignant soft tissue tumors (STTs), and examine variations in age, sex, anatomical location, and histological subtypes. Methods This descriptive study was co

[Soft tissue neoplasms arising from myofibroblasts].

A group of 14 mainly spindle-cell tumours caused some uncertainly during bioptic classification with diagnosis oscillating between proliferating fibroma, fasciitis, fibrosarcoma, mesenchymal tumour, leimyoma, fibromesothelioma or even polymorphocellular sarcoma. A common feature was seen in the presence of different proportions of myofibroblasts of largely variable appearance. The only justification for the term "tumours arising from myofibroblasts" is in the predominance of well defined myofibroblasts. In all other cases the presence of such elements is at least a prospective contribution to

Mimics of bone and soft tissue neoplasms.

Many benign nonneoplastic entities can mimic bone and soft tissue tumors on imaging examinations. Distinguishing between neoplastic and nonneoplastic entities depends on history and physical examination findings and imaging findings, and is an important early step in the patient's overall workup and treatment plan. This article describes some of the pseudotumors seen on imaging studies in our orthopedic oncology clinic, as well as mimics of bone and soft tissue neoplasms described in the medical literature. Tumor mimics resulting from anatomic and developmental variants, trauma, infection and

Mesenchymal Neoplasms of the Kidney and Perinephric Soft Tissue.

Mesenchymal neoplasms of the kidney present challenges because they are uncommon, and because perinephric soft tissue biopsies are sometimes submitted as "kidney" masses, causing diagnostic confusion. Here, the author thoroughly reviews mesenchymal neoplasms of the kidney, including metanephric stromal tumor, classic and cellular congenital mesoblastic nephroma, anaplastic sarcoma and clear cell sarcoma of the kidney, malignant rhabdoid tumor, PEComa/angiomyolipoma, and anastomosing hemangioma. The author also discusses perinephric myxoid pseudotumor of fat, as well as diagnostic pitfalls pres

Actinomycosis of the thigh presenting as a soft-tissue neoplasm.

A 14-year-old boy presented with a mass measuring 6 cm x 9 cm, proximal to the patella on the anterior aspect of the knee. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 6 x 8 x 4 cm smoothly marginated slightly heterogeneous ellipsoidal mass which displaced musculature, the adjacent cutaneous fat and the quadriceps tendon. At surgery, the mass was noted not to penetrate the superficial surface of the quadriceps tendon and was full of slimy fluid. Histological examination revealed multiple basophilic lobulated granules with homogeneous centres and eosinophilic peripheral clubbed projections. The organi

Endometriosis Mimicking Soft-Tissue Neoplasms: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

Endometriosis is a common gynecological disorder most often involving the pelvic region. Although it is rare, endometriosis occurring outside of the peritoneal cavity most commonly occurs within scars of the abdominal wall, but it has been reported in the lungs, pleura, kidneys, brain, and the extremities. Herein, we present 2 cases of endometriosis, including 1 case of endometriosis of the wrist that clinically mimicked a soft-tissue neoplasm and 1 case of right-groin endometriosis mimicking synovial sarcoma during the initial pathological interpretation of findings on fine needle aspiration.

Soft Tissue Neoplasms Causing Apparent Venous Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Venous thoracic outlet syndrome (vTOS) usually results from compression of the subclavian vein classically as a result of narrowing of the costoclavicular space. We report 2 rare cases of soft tissue neoplasms resulting in apparent vTOS. The first case is a 46-year-old female with a 2-year history of intermittent unilateral shoulder pain, who was initially diagnosed with intervertebral disk herniation. Cervical fusion was performed; however, her symptoms progressed and she additionally developed paresthesias and venous congestion. Computed tomography (CT) angiogram demonstrated a 13-cm-encapsu

[Polyostotic fibro-osseus lesions associated with intramuscular soft tissue neoplasms].

A 40-year-old female patient presented with progressive painful soft tissue lesions in the left upper arm. Conventional radiography showed multicystic bone tumors of the left humerus, radius and ulna. The computed tomography (CT) scan showed no paraosteal spread. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detected intramuscular tumors in the deltoid muscle, biceps humeri muscle and triceps humeri muscle which were T2-weighted hyperintense and T1-weighted hypointense. Postcontrast images showed a marginal enhancement. The findings corresponded to the rare Mazabraud's syndrome in which polyostotic fibrous

Magnetic resonance imaging of benign soft tissue neoplasms in adults.

This article reviews a spectrum of benign soft tissue tumors found in adults. Rather than presenting a complete review, the focus of this article is on benign tumors for which the diagnosis may be confidently made or strongly suggested on the basis of imaging. Diagnoses presented include nodular fasciitis, superficial and deep fibromatosis, elastofibroma, lipomatous lesions, giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath, pigmented villonodular synovitis, peripheral nerve sheath tumors, Morton neuroma, hemangioma, and myxoma.

Hematolymphoid Neoplasms Rarely Mimic Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma of Soft Tissue.

CONTEXT.—: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) of soft tissue is defined as a sarcoma with no recognizable line of differentiation. During the past few decades, advances in ancillary studies and review of prior UPS diagnoses have narrowed the category of UPS by excluding more-specific malignancies. However, few of those studies have specifically targeted pleomorphic hematolymphoid neoplasms. OBJECTIVE.—: To determine what fraction of UPS cases are misclassified pleomorphic hematolymphoid neoplasms, such as anaplastic large cell lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, histiocytic sarco

[Soft tissue neoplasms--progress and limits of pathologico-anatomic diagnosis].

Current classifications of soft tissue tumors are based principally on the histogenetic type of the tumor thereby abandoning descriptive terms such as spindle cell sarcoma, round cell sarcoma etc. Insight into the histogenesis of a number of soft tissue tumor types has been gained from electron microscopical studies. In addition, these studies provided valuable data to establish certain neoplasms as tumor entities. Thus, the histogenesis of clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses has been traced to melanocytes, and it is now universally accepted that biphasic synovial sarcoma consists of

Thoracic neoplasms at the Jena reference center for soft tissue tumors.

INTRODUCTION: The Jena Soft Tissue Tumor Reference Center is the major German pathology institute for consultation of malignant mesenchymal tumors. Here, we present the clinicopathological data on thoracic soft tissue tumors of a two-year period. METHODS: The tumors were analyzed according to their localization, type (soft tissue tumor, other tumor type, non-neoplastic lesion) and biological behavior. The frequency of the defined soft tissue tumor entities were considered after categorizing the cases according to the WHO Classification of Tumors. Gender and age were also assessed. RESULTS: I

Second malignant neoplasms in children after treatment of soft tissue sarcoma.

Currently, approximately 67% of children diagnosed with cancer can be expected to survive more than 5 years. Among the most significant late effects of cancer therapy is the development of second malignant neoplasm (SMN). This study was performed to identify the factors associated with the development of second malignant neoplasms after treatment for soft tissue sarcomas in childhood. Retrospectively the charts of 20 children who developed second malignant neoplasms after treatment for primary childhood soft tissue sarcoma were reviewed. Presentation, age at diagnosis, tumor histology, extent

A Rare Lesion of Soft Tissue Malakoplakia Mimicking Neoplasm in the Thigh.

Malakoplakia, a rare acquired histiocytic inflammatory disease. It is an incidental finding on histopathology examination, as it does not have definite clinical manifestations. It typically affects the genitourinary tract but can also involve various anatomical sites. We present malakoplakia involving the left thigh, a rare extragenital manifestation. A 42-year-old male patient presented with insidious left thigh swelling, which gradually increased in size over a year, without associated pain or systemic symptoms. Imaging and fine needle aspiration cytology prompted a suspicion of malignancy.

Clinical course of atypical parathyroid neoplasm with soft tissue extension.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM staging system defines atypical parathyroid neoplasia (APN) as tumor in situ (Tis) and reserves the definition of parathyroid carcinoma (PC) to parathyroid tumor with invasion into surrounding structures. Because the parathyroid gland has no true capsule, "extension" with APN versus microscopic "invasion" of surrounding soft tissue can be difficult and confusing for clinicians. We aimed to determine the clinical course of atypical parathyroid neoplasm with and without soft tissue extension and parathyroid carcinoma wi
