Micro-scale interactions between Arabidopsis root hairs and soil particles influence soil erosion.

Soil is essential for sustaining life on land. Plant roots play a crucial role in stabilising soil and minimising erosion, although these mechanisms are still not completely understood. Consequently, identifying and breeding for plant traits to enhance erosion resistance is challenging. Root hair mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana were studied using three different quantitative methods to isolate their effect on root-soil cohesion. We present compelling evidence that micro-scale interactions of root hairs with surrounding soil increase soil cohesion and reduce erosion. Arabidopsis seedlings with

Millet cultivation mitigates soil erosion in sloping farmland by regulating near-soil surface traits.

INTRODUCTION: Crop growth induces seasonal variations in the near-soil surface traits, including vegetation features, root systems, and soil properties. However, the influencing mechanisms of variations in the near-soil surface traits on soil erosion remain unclear in sloping farmland. METHODS: Rainfall simulation experiments with slope gradients of 5.24%, 8.75%, 17.63%, and 26.79% were carried out on bare soil control (CK) and millet cultivation plots at different growth stages. Near-soil surface traits such as soil bulk density (BD), aggregate mean weight diameter (MWD), soil cohesion (Coh)

Effects of soil erosion on soil quality of sloping farmland under different tillage methods in the typical thick-layer Mollisol region.

The effects of soil erosion on soil quality of sloping farmland in thick Mollisol region under different tillage methods remain unclear. Thus, three field plots with three tillage treatments of no ridge, longitudinal narrow-ridge and wide-ridge without crop planting were established across a 320-m natural slope, located at thick Mollisol region in Keshan County, Heilongjiang Province. Soil erosion rates were estimated by rare earth element (REE) tracing based on the point sampling placement method, soil erosion intensity and its spatial distribution were analyzed. A soil quality evaluation sys

Effects of soil erosion and anoxic-euxinic ocean in the Permian-Triassic marine crisis.

The largest mass extinction of biota in the Earth's history occurred during the Permian-Triassic transition and included two extinctions, one each at the latest Permian (first phase) and earliest Triassic (second phase). High seawater temperature in the surface water accompanied by euxinic deep-intermediate water, intrusion of the euxinic water to the surface water, a decrease in pH, and hypercapnia have been proposed as direct causes of the marine crisis. For the first-phase extinction, we here add a causal mechanism beginning from massive soil and rock erosion and leading to algal blooms, re

Long-term relationships among pesticide applications, mobility, and soil erosion in a vineyard watershed.

Agricultural pesticide use has increased worldwide during the last several decades, but the long-term fate, storage, and transfer dynamics of pesticides in a changing environment are poorly understood. Many pesticides have been progressively banned, but in numerous cases, these molecules are stable and may persist in soils, sediments, and ice. Many studies have addressed the question of their possible remobilization as a result of global change. In this article, we present a retro-observation approach based on lake sediment records to monitor micropollutants and to evaluate the long-term succe

Preparation and Properties of Low-Carbon Foamed Lightweight Soil with High Resistance to Sulphate Erosion Environments.

Foamed lightweight soil (FLS) is a lightweight cementitious material containing a large number of tiny closed pores and has been widely used as a filler in places such as railways, roads and airports. However, there has been little research into the resistance of FLS to sulphate attack in practical engineering applications. The performance of FLS against different sulphate erosion concentrations was studied to elucidate the engineering characteristics of using large volumes of FLS as fill material for the road base in the construction of intelligent networked vehicle test sites. The results sh

Regulatory effect of biological soil crust distribution patterns on the spatial distribution of wind erosion on slopes.

Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) are key factors influencing soil wind erosion in arid and semi-arid regions. However, the effects of their spatial distribution on the spatial differentiation of surface erosion remain unclear, hindering the understanding of the mechanisms of resistance to wind erosion and the precision prevention and control of wind erosion. We investigated the effects of biocrust distribution patterns (checkerboard, strip, and random) on the spatial distribution of wind erosion through wind tunnel experiments combined with structure from motion (SfM). The results showed tha

Rainfall simulation and Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry for the analysis of soil water erosion in Mediterranean vineyards.

Soil water erosion is a serious problem, especially in agricultural lands. Among these, vineyards deserve attention, because they constitute for the Mediterranean areas a type of land use affected by high soil losses. A significant problem related to the study of soil water erosion in these areas consists in the lack of a standardized procedure of collecting data and reporting results, mainly due to a variability among the measurement methods applied. Given this issue and the seriousness of soil water erosion in Mediterranean vineyards, this works aims to quantify the soil losses caused by sim

Experimental test and mechanism analysis of soil crust erosion resistance of rammed earth Great Wall in rainy season.

Rammed earth is a kind of cleaning material, widely used in all kinds of buildings in the world. The Great Wall of ancient China is a typical world cultural site built from rammed earth. The rammed earth Great Wall of Shanhaiguan is close to Bohai Bay, which has suffered from long-term erosion by rain, causing a series of problems such as soil loss, collapse and gully flushing. The protection materials of the rammed earth site have always puzzled scholars. However, during the rainy season, it was found that some of the walls at Xiaowan Gouge and Nantuzhuang Gouge in the Shanhaiguan Great Wall

Manure substitution counteracts mineral nitrogen-driven erosion of the phoD guild and supports phosphorus mobilization in acidified paddy soil.

Maintaining microbially mediated phosphorus mobilization under intensive nitrogen fertilization is difficult in acidified paddy soils. Using a decade-long field experiment in a rice-oilseed rape rotation, we compared an ordered manure-substitution series, in which manure input increased while mineral nitrogen input decreased, with a mineral nitrogen dose gradient. Increasing mineral nitrogen input was associated with lower diversity and absolute abundance of the phoD-harbouring bacterial guild and a marked shift in community composition. Across the manure-substitution series, soil pH increased

Disturbance legacies and shifting trajectories: Marsh soil strength and shoreline erosion a decade after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Marsh resilience post disturbance is strongly dependent on the belowground dynamics affecting the emergent plants aboveground. We investigated the long-term impacts at the marsh-water interface in coastal wetlands of south Louisiana after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill with a combination of fieldwork (2010-2018) and spatial analysis (1998-2021). Data were collected on shoreline erosion rates, marsh platform elevation heights and cantilever overhang widths, and soil strength up to 1 m depth. Oil concentration in the top 5 cm of the marsh soil were determined using gas chromatography/mass

Spatial and temporal evolution and interaction of soil erosion intensity and influencing factors in Wenzhou City from 2000 to 2023.

Soil erosion constitutes a critical global environmental issue, which is particularly pressing in rapidly urbanizing coastal hilly regions where natural and anthropogenic pressures are intensely intertwined. This study takes Wenzhou City, a typical coastal area in southeastern China, as the research object. Based on multi-source remote sensing and meteorological data from 2000 to 2023, we comprehensively applied the InVEST model to assess soil erosion intensity. This was combined with hotspot analysis, Pearson correlation, and the interpretable machine learning method (XGBoost-SHAP) to quantif

Nitrogen in urban stormwater caused as significant algal growth response as simulated soil erosion runoff despite differences in nitrogen forms.

Urban stormwater can accumulate significant nutrients and other pollutants from the catchment, leading to water quality degradation in receiving waters. However, the impact of nutrients in urban stormwater on the ecological processes of receiving environments, particularly compared with other point and diffuse sources of nutrients, has not been well studied. Understanding how different nutrient sources affect ecological responses can improve catchment-scale nutrient management and prioritization. This study investigated how nutrients in urban stormwater impact algal growth response using stand

Evaluating spatio-temporal soil erosion dynamics in the Winam Gulf catchment, Kenya for enhanced decision making in the land-lake interface.

Soil erosion accelerated by poor agricultural practices, land degradation, deprived infrastructure development and other anthropogenic activities has important implications for nutrient cycling, land and lake productivity, loss of livelihoods and ecosystem services, as well as socioeconomic disruption. Enhanced knowledge of dynamic factors influencing soil erosion is critical for policymakers engaged in land use decision-making. This study presents the first spatio-temporal assessment of soil erosion risk modelling in the Winam Gulf, Kenya using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE)

Sodium alginate-regulated biomineralization with polyacrylamide for sustainable stabilization of expansive soils: Optimization, hydro-climatic durability, and erosion resistance.

Sodium alginate (SA) is a natural biological macromolecule with unique potential for regulating biomineralization through ionic coordination and hydrogel network formation. In this study, an SA-mediated mineralized hydrogel system was constructed with polyacrylamide (PAM) to regulate microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) for the durable stabilization of expansive soil. A Box-Behnken response surface design was used to optimize the cementation solution concentration and the dosages of SA and PAM, with unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and shear strength as response targ

Relationship Between Understory Plant Diversity and Soil Physicochemical Properties in Four Vegetation Restoration Forest Types in the Latosol Gully Erosion Area on Hainan Island.

Studying the relationships between understory plant diversity and soil physicochemical properties aids in understanding the sustainable development of plantation forests. Vegetation restoration in latosol gully erosion areas plays a key role in preventing soil erosion. Variations in understory plant diversity and soil physicochemical properties in areas that have undergone vegetation restoration subsequent to gully erosion are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the understory species composition, importance values, plant diversity, and soil physicochemical properties and explo

Response of soil functions to erosion/deposition in sloping farmland within the Three Gorges Reservoir Area: A study using magnetic susceptibility tracing across the whole hillslope.

Evaluating soil function is crucial for mitigating soil degradation in sloping farmland, improving soil environment, and promoting sustainable agricultural development. However, a systematic understanding of the spatial differentiation mechanisms and main controlling factors of soil function in sloping farmland, particularly under whole hillslope erosion and deposition environments, remains insufficient. This restricts the scientific formulation of soil function improvement and sustainable utilization strategies for regional sloping farmland. Hence, we took the purple soil sloping farmland in

The spatio-temporal variability of soil microplastic distribution and erosion-induced microplastic export under extreme rainfall event using sediment fingerprinting and 7Be in intensive agricultural catchment.

Intensive agricultural production and land management often lead to soil microplastics (MPs) accumulation and aggravated erosion consequently polluting water bodies. However, little is known about the occurrence and migration of soil MPs induced by soil erosion at the catchment scale. This study firstly reported the spatio-temporal variability in soil MPs distribution, and erosion-induced microplastic export loads under extreme rainfall events in an intensive agricultural catchment. The results indicated that microplastic abundance peaked in November 2022 and varied by land use types, among wh

Integrated mass-balance-based modeling of cadmium in agricultural soils incorporating erosion processes: Future trends, accumulation rates, and dynamic critical loads.

Predictive assessment of heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils is essential for food security and ecosystem protection, yet current models primarily focus on vertical transport while largely neglecting lateral erosion fluxes. To overcome this limitation, a spatially explicit dynamic mass-balance model was developed that integrated vertical processes with lateral transport via water and wind erosion, supported by a comprehensive field-based dataset. The model was used to simulate cadmium (Cd) dynamics and evaluate dynamic critical loads (DCL) over 50 years in an industrial-impacted wa
