[Effect of the increasing levels of soil radioactive pollution on the biochemical composition of plants].

The study was undertaken to study a relationship between the changes of some parameters of the biochemical and mineral composition of different plants, such as rape, pods, and lentil, and the levels of soil radiation pollution, by using the conventional methods. Radioactive pollution of dark-grey forest soils was found to cause a change in the biochemical composition of plant seeds even at the level of cesium 137 (137Cs) within the present temporary permissible levels (TPL) (600 Bq/kg): there were elevated concentrations of salts of potassium, phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, catechols, sucrose,

Evaluation of radioactive and heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil surrounding the lignite-fired thermal power plant using pollution indices.

Soil pollution caused by heavy metals negatively affects the environment and human health. However, the assessment of the environmental and ecological risks caused by heavy metals in agricultural soils in developing countries is limited. This study was carried out to determine heavy metal pollution and its possible sources in the agricultural lands surrounding the lignite-fired Afşin-Elbistan thermal power plant (TPP). A total of 52 soil samples were collected from the agricultural soils surrounding the TPP, and seven different heavy metal (U, Th, Ni, Fe, Cu, Cr and Zn) analyzes were performed

Bio-monitoring for uranium using stream-side terrestrial plants and macrophytes.

This study evaluated the abilities of various plant species to act as bio-monitors for environmental uranium (U) contamination. Vegetation and soil samples were collected from a U processing facility. The water-way fed from facility storm and processing effluents was the focal sample site as it represented a primary U transport mechanism. Soils and sediments from areas exposed to contamination possessed U concentrations that averaged 630 mg U kg(-1). Aquatic mosses proved to be exceptional accumulators of U with dry weight (dw) concentrations measuring as high as 12,500 mg U kg(-1) (approximat

Methods and techniques for the selective extraction and recovery of oxoanions.

An important goal in environmental chemistry is the extraction of metals that are toxic or radioactive from soils and waters. For many such metals, the problem is solved by designing compounds with coordination sites that are specific for that particular metal. For cases such as oxoanions, however, where the inorganic center is already fully coordinated by oxygens, different strategies need to be used. Chromate, phosphate, selenate, pertechnetate, and aluminate are such anions. These species are problematic contaminants in soils and waters because they are either toxic, environmentally undesir

Phytotoxicity to and uptake of RDX by rice.

Phytoremediation is an emerging strategy to remediate soils contaminated with pollutants like explosives in which plants will uptake, degrade and/or accumulate pollutants. To implement this technology on a site contaminated with RDX, we chose rice, which is able to grow in lagoons, and we tested its ability to grow in soils with high levels of RDX and to decrease RDX concentrations in soil. Rice was grown for 40 days in soil contaminated with increasing [14C]RDX concentrations. Emergence and growth were not affected by RDX. Total chlorophyll content decreased with RDX concentrations of over 50

Study on physiological responses and Cs enrichment capacity of Moso bamboo in Cs-contaminated soil.

Soil contamination by radioactive element cesium (Cs) is a growing environmental concern. Phytoremediation, employing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable plants, constitutes a promising strategy for mitigation. Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens), a species with high tolerance, economic value, and phytoremediation potential, is studied in this work. This study investigated the impacts of varying soil cesium concentrations (0, 5, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200 mg kg-1 soil) on the growth, physiological and biochemical responses, as well as the accumulation and translocation of Cs in potted

Factors influencing radon risk in mining areas: In Situ verification of multi-criteria tool.

The main source of radon penetrating buildings is the ground. Both the concentration of natural radioactive nuclides and the physical properties of soil and rock, which facilitate the migration of radon, are important. In the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Poland), many years of mining activity have caused the disintegration of the geological environment, hydrological disturbances, and damage to buildings located within continuous and discontinuous deformation areas. These phenomena may facilitate the transport and penetration of radon into residential and workplace premises. This paper presents a

Experimental study on radon retardation effect of modular covering floats in radon-containing water.

Radon-containing water bodies in uranium mining areas inevitably release radon gas, polluting the surrounding environment via radiation. Thus, it is particularly important to develop devices with the ability to retard the radon release from such water bodies. Based upon theories of radon exhalation in water, a radon exhalation retardation device (RERD) with flexible, modular floats (a flexible polyvinyl chloride material module that floats on water) was designed and manufactured. To study the modular surface-covering floats' effectiveness in retarding radon release from water surfaces, an expe

The influence of soil properties on sorption-desorption of beryllium at a low level radioactive legacy waste site.

This study examined the influence of soil physicochemical properties on the sorption, desorption and kinetics of beryllium (Be) uptake and release on soils from a legacy waste site in Australia. This information is needed to help explain the current distribution of Be at the site and evaluate potential future environmental risks. Sorption was determined by a batch study and key soil properties were assessed to explain Be retention. The soil was favourable for sorption of Be (up to 99%) due to organic content, negative surface charge, soil oxyhydroxides (Fe/Al/Mn-O/OH) and the porosity of the s

Distribution of TENORM-contaminated soils in residential areas of Bangka Island, Indonesia.

Radioactive contamination in residential areas of Bangka Island, Indonesia, a major tin- and rare earth-producing region, has rarely been studied, although material stored near mineral-processing workshops may pose a long-term health risk. We collected 46 soil samples around 9 mineral-processing workshops in the Selindung District, Pangkal Pinang City: residential soils from 20 locations at two depths (n = 40) and 6 workshop-related sediments. High-purity germanium detector analysis showed that 13 of the 40 residential soil samples exceeded the screening criteria of the IAEA Safety Standards S

The features of Cs sorption onto peaty-podzolic-gleyic soil.

This article studies sorption regularities and estimates the strength of 137Cs fixation by various soil horizons in peaty-podzolic-gleyic soils under a model experiment. The interaction time varied from 1 week to 3 months while Cs concentration varied from trace to micromolar concentrations. To understand the interaction mechanisms of cesium with individual soil components, we used the method of sequential removal of organic matter and non-silicate iron compounds from the soil before the sorption experiment. Illite and vermiculite were found to be the main soil components for radiocesium sorpt

Linking health risks, pollution indices, and contamination sources in urban soils of Central Serbia.

Serbia represents a valuable setting for improving soil pollution monitoring, particularly in urban environments facing regulatory and infrastructural constraints. In a country with some of the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in Europe, persistent soil contamination poses a critical environmental and public health concern. This study provides an integrated assessment of radiological and chemical health risks in the soils of one of Serbia's largest cities, impacted by intensive industrial activities and war-related damage. Activity concentrations of radionuclides and metal contents

An upper bound on uranium-mining radon contributions to regional environmental 210Pb inventories.

Radon releases from uranium-mining legacies are commonly evaluated in relation to inhalation exposure. Here, the separate question is whether the 210Pb produced from sustained legacy releases could perturb the inventories used to date and interpret soils, sediments, peat and other environmental archives. This paper bounds that possibility and tests the natural-meteoric provenance assumption underlying regional excess-210Pb interpretation. Because decay-chain mass balance conserves atoms rather than activity, conversion from a 3.8-day radionuclide to a 22.3-year radionuclide reduces the associa

KdMultigrid - A tool for generating multidimensional look-up tables with solid-liquid distribution coefficients for radioecological and transport modeling.

The batch processor KdMultigrid for generating look-up tables with distribution coefficients (Kd) is introduced. These tables can be used for radioecological and transport modeling. KdMultigrid works by repeatedly calling the executable of the well-known geochemical code PHREEQC for multiple combinations of soil parameters (e.g. pH, concentrations of significant ions, organic matter content) specified in the graphical user interface of KdMultigrid. The Kd values are calculated according to the component additive UNiSeCs III approach (described in the appendix) which has to be specified for a p

Baseline thorium concentration and isotope ratios in topsoil of Zacatecas State, Mexico.

Thorium is a radionuclide highly widespread in the earth's crust with a relevant contribution to the exposure to radiation of living organisms. Natural concentrations of thorium in the soil can be altered due to human activities such as mining, agriculture, and cattle industry. Mining and related industry have been operating for centuries in Zacatecas State, Mexico, leaving mining waste dumps that can release trace elements to the topsoil. There are not enough previous studies of thorium concentration in this area. Thirty-three soil samples from different locations from Zacatecas State were an

High seasonal variations of the radon exhalation from soil surface in the fault zones (Baikal and North Caucasus regions).

The seasonal variations of radon exhalation rate from soil surface were studied in two seismically active regions of the Russian Federation - the Baikal rift and the North Caucasus. In each region, monthly measurements of the radon exhalation have been carried out at two relatively proximal sites, one of which was located within the active fault zone and the other outside of the fault zone. The Open Charcoal Chamber Method was used. Very high radon exhalation rate values were found in the fault zones at both regions. At the Baikal rift, the radon exhalation reached 1.4 Bq m-2 s-1, and at the C

The influence of traffic vibrations on the radon potential.

The influence of traffic vibrations on the radon potential is analyzed in this study. Generally, the radon concentration in soil-gas increases through traffic vibrations. The influence of the vibrations is determined near railway tracks and heavy-traffic roads. Soils above natural, in-place, bedrock (solid and unconsolidated rocks) and backfills were studied. The type of vibrations, as well the soil material, have a pronounced influence on the amount of increase of the radon concentration. The spatial radius of influence is wider with railway traffic (>30 m) than with motor vehicle traffic (<2

Predicting the long-term (137)Cs distribution in Fukushima after the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident: a parameter sensitivity analysis.

Radioactive materials deposited on the land surface of Fukushima Prefecture from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant explosion is a crucial issue for a number of reasons, including external and internal radiation exposure and impacts on agricultural environments and aquatic biota. Predicting the future distribution of radioactive materials and their fates is therefore indispensable for evaluation and comparison of the effectiveness of remediation options regarding human health and the environment. Cesium-137, the main radionuclide to be focused on, is well known to adsorb to clay-rich s

Equation to predict the (137)Cs leaching dynamic from evergreen canopies after a radio-cesium deposit.

The Fukushima Daiishi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) accident led to a massive radionuclide deposition mainly onto Japanese forest canopies. In our previous study, an improved double exponential (IDE) equation including rainfall intensity was proposed to estimate the (137)Cs hydrological transport from evergreen canopies to the ground. This equation used two types of parameters, kinetic (k1 and k2) and leachable stock (A1 and A2). Those parameters have been estimated by adjusting them in the IDE equation in order to accurately describe the measured cumulative leached (137)Cs from canopies (k1 = 4
