Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) is an important cause of reversible acute kidney injury and pathologically characterized by inflammatory infiltrate in the renal interstitium. Solanum nigrum (S. nigrum) is a medicinal plant member of the Solanaceae family. Although S. nigrum has been traditionally used to treat various ailments such as pain, inflammation, and fever, it has also been reported to have a toxic effect, resulting in anticholinergic symptoms. However, there have been no reports of AIN caused by S. nigrum. Here, we report the first case of biopsy-confirmed AIN after ingestion of S.

Solanum nigrum L. leaves and fruits were shown to have molluscicidal activities against snails transmitting schistosomiasis and fascioliasis. In the present study, their molluscicidal activity against adult Biomphalaria alexandrina snails was assessed to determine whether plants collected at various seasons would have different degrees of toxicity. Leaves and fruits of three S. nigrum varieties were collected from Faiyoum and/or Giza during the four seasons. Leaves collected in autumn had the highest effect (LC50-35.4) followed by spring (LC50 = 44.36), summer (LC50 = 46.7) and winter (LC50 =

Plants respond to environmental stresses through a series of complicated phenotypic responses, which can be understood only with field studies because other organisms must be recruited for their function. If ecologists are to fully participate in the genomics revolution and if molecular biologists are to understand adaptive phenotypic responses, native plant ecological expression systems that offer both molecular tools and interesting natural histories are needed. Here, we present Solanum nigrum L., a Solanaceous relative of potato and tomato for which many genomic tools are being developed, a

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory skin disease in which pattern recognition receptors, particularly the NLRP3 inflammasome, are increasingly implicated in disease pathogenesis. Solanum nigrum (SN) has been used in traditional and clinical practice for psoriasis treatment, but its therapeutic mechanisms and key active constituents remain unclear. This study investigated the anti-psoriatic mechanisms of SN and identified its major bioactive component.
METHODS: NLRP3 inflammasome activation in psoriasis was evaluated using public transcriptomic datasets and clinical ski

The Solanaceae family comprises numerous species of economic and pharmacological importance, including the toxic deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna), bittersweet nightshade (Solanum dulcamara), and black nightshade (Solanum nigrum). These plants are native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, and have been used since ancient times in both ritual practices and medicine. A. belladonna contains potent tropane alkaloids (atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine) and is widely utilized in modern pharmacology, although accidental poisonings still occur, often due to confusion with edible plant

This study focused to enhance the cadmium (Cd) phytoextraction efficiency in Solanum nigrum by applying four biodegradable chelants (10 mM)-ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA), ethylenediamine disuccinate (EDDS), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and citric acid (CA), when grown in Cd-spiked soil (12 and 48 mg kg-1). Plant height, dry biomass, photosynthetic traits, and metal accumulation varied significantly with Cd and chelant treatments. Cadmium-toxicity resulted in reduction of plant growth and photosynthetic physiology, whereas chelant supplementation alleviated the toxic effect of Cd and

The molluscicidal properties of Solanum nigrum L. were tested against three Egyptian snail species (Biomphalaria alexandrina, Bulinus truncatus and Lymnaea natalensis), each an intermediate host of parasites causing human schistosomiasis or fascioliasis. The plant was collected in two regions within Egypt: Fayium and Giza. Snails were exposed for 24 and 48 h, to the dry powdered fruits and leaves or to crude water extracts of the powders, and mortality was recorded. The water extract of the leaves collected in Fayium (FLWE) had the highest molluscicidal activity, with median lethal concentrati

Solanum nigrum Linne polysaccharide (SNLP), an active ingredient from Solanum nigrum Linne, has been proposed to inhibit tumor growth and display immunomodulatory activity. However, the molecular mechanism related to immune regulation remains unclear. In the present study, a homogeneous polysaccharide (SNLP-1) was extracted, the immune effects and the underlying molecular mechanisms were investigated. The immunomodulatory activity assay in vitro showed that SNLP-1 promoted the release of NO and TNF-α and IL-6 secretion in macrophages. In tumor-bearing mice, SNLP-1 could improve immune function

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of Solanum nigrum Linne (SNL) in a model of 1‑chloro‑2,4‑dinitrobenzene (DNCB)‑induced atopic dermatitis (AD) and in TNF‑α/IFN‑γ‑stimulated HaCaT cells. AD is a chronic inflammatory skin disease and is characterized by erythema, edema, increased pruritus and eczema. Steroids are most commonly used for anti‑inflammatory therapy; however, their long‑term use is limited due to side‑effects, such as osteoporosis, brittle skin, muscle weaknesses and diabetes. Therefore, patients with AD require alternative treatment strategies. In previous studies,
