Solar-energy-driven value-added oxidation processes.

Climate change has driven the development of sustainable catalytic processes to power our society. Applying solar energy to drive catalytic reactions is regarded as a green chemistry for value-added conversions. The photogenerated electrons have been applied for many promising processes such as hydrogen production, carbon dioxide reduction and nitrogen fixation, but the photogenerated holes are less focused on. Other than the traditional oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which has low economic value, some more promising reactions are expected to be explored, including water oxidation for hydrog

Solar optics-based active panel for solar energy storage and disinfection of greywater.

Smart city and innovative building strategies are becoming increasingly more necessary because advancing a sustainable building system is regarded as a promising solution to overcome the depleting water and energy. However, current sustainable building systems mainly focus on energy saving and miss a holistic integration of water regeneration and energy generation. Here, we present a theoretical study of a solar optics-based active panel (SOAP) that enables both solar energy storage and photothermal disinfection of greywater simultaneously. Plasmonic Supraballs for Scalable Broadband Solar Energy Harvesting.

Practical solar energy harvesting demands absorbers that combine large-area scalability with strong light-matter interactions spanning the visible to near-infrared (NIR) spectrum. Here, we introduce plasmonic colloidal supraballs─solution-processable assemblies of gold nanospheres (Au NSs)─as a robust and versatile platform for broadband solar energy harvesting. Unlike conventional dielectric supraballs or random Au NS aggregates, our supraballs integrate localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) at the shell with multipolar Mie-type magnetic resonances in the core, achieving synergistic li

Artificial light-harvesting arrays for solar energy conversion.

Solar fuel production, the process whereby an energy-rich substance is produced using electrons provided by water under exposure to sunlight, requires the cooperative accumulation of multiple numbers of photons. Identifying the optimum reagents is a difficult challenge, even without imposing the restriction that these same materials must function as both sensitiser and catalyst. The blockade caused by an inadequate supply of photons at the catalytic sites might be resolved by making use of an artificial light-harvesting array whose sole purpose is to funnel photons of appropriate frequency to

Performance optimization of energy-efficient solar absorbers for thermal energy harvesting in modern industrial environments using a solar deep learning model.

Thermal energy harvesting has seen a rise in popularity in recent years due to its potential to generate renewable energy from the sun. One of the key components of this process is the solar absorber, which is responsible for converting solar radiation into thermal energy. In this paper, a smart performance optimization of energy efficient solar absorber for thermal energy harvesting is proposed for modern industrial environments using solar deep learning model. In this model, data is collected from multiple sensors over time that measure various environmental factors such as temperature, humi

Diversity in energy transition: a multi-case study on DIY solar energy in Germany.

The transition to renewable energy systems is not only a technological challenge but also a deeply social and cultural process with significant implications for intersectional equality. Citizen-led energy initiatives are often portrayed as ideal spaces for participatory engagement, yet they can reproduce exclusionary dynamics, particularly regarding gender-related injustices. With a particular focus on FLINTA*-persons this study examines how citizen-led, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) photovoltaic (PV) initiatives in Germany translate normative commitments to diversity and justice into everyday organiza

Anchoring phase change interface enhances solar thermal energy storage.

Solar thermal energy storage based on phase change materials (PCMs) provides a compact, near-isothermal pathway toward decarbonizing thermal energy supplies. However, the intrinsic recession of the solid-liquid interface away from the irradiated surface leads to gradually increasing thermal resistance and decaying charging rate with time. To address this challenge, we demonstrate that anchoring the phase change interface achieves rapid, efficient, and continuous solar thermal charging. This is enabled by dynamically circulating photothermal core-shell composite phase change particles (CPCPs) t

Bacteriorhodopsin-based Langmuir-Schaefer films for solar energy capture.

The photovoltaic (PV) solar cell, converting incident solar radiation directly into electrical energy, today represents the most common power source for the earth-orbiting spacecraft, and the utilization of organic materials in this context is here explored in comparison with the present state of the art placing emphasis in organic nanotechnology. Poly[3-3'(vinylcarbazole)] (PVK) was synthesized by oxidative polymerization with ferric chloride of N-vinylcarbazole. The resulting polymer was then deposited on solid support by using the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) technique. The pressure-area isotherm

Perovskites with d-block metals for solar energy applications.

Pb2+ halide organic-inorganic perovskites are excellent semiconductors for use in solar energy applications, but at the expense of robustness and environmental compatibility. Tin (Sn), which sits just above lead in the periodic table, forms pure (or mixed with lead) perovskites when at the 2+ or 4+ oxidation state. It can act as a promising alternative; however, there are still some serious concerns regarding its suitability. This presents a major challenge; viable metal cations have to be identified. A good number of elements, originating from a large range of d-block metal ions, with adequat

Magnetoacoustic wave energy dissipation in the atmosphere of solar pores.

The suitability of solar pores as magnetic wave guides has been a key topic of discussion in recent years. Here, we present observational evidence of propagating magnetohydrodynamic wave activity in a group of five photospheric solar pores. Employing data obtained by the Facility Infrared Spectropolarimeter at the Dunn Solar Telescope, oscillations with periods of the order of 5 min were detected at varying atmospheric heights by examining Si ɪ 10827 Å line bisector velocities. Spectropolarimetric inversions, coupled with the spatially resolved root mean square bisector velocities, allowed the

KNbO3/ZnO heterojunction harvesting ultrasonic mechanical energy and solar energy to efficiently degrade methyl orange.

In this paper, KNbO3/ZnO nanocomposite was synthesized and used in piezo/photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) under simulated sunlight and ultrasonic vibration. Under simulated solar light, the optimal KNbO3/ZnO sample presented a MO degradation rate of 0.047 min-1, which is 2.47 times higher than that of ZnO. The promotion effect of KNbO3 on ZnO was also observed in the piezoelectric catalytic reaction. In addition, the co-utilization of solar and mechanical energy can further increase the MO degradation rate. Piezoelectric property and photoresponse capability are the origins of

Substituent Tightrope: Balancing Energy Storage and Stability of Dihydroazaborinine Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage Candidates.

1,2-Dihydro-1,2-azaborinines (BN-benzenes) are promising candidates for molecular solar thermal energy storage (MOST) as substitution-dependent isomerization to either the Dewar BN-benzene or benzvalene isomers is possible. Since not only photoisomerization behavior but also key MOST parameters, such as the half-life of the photoisomers, the energy storage density, and the absorption wavelength, are strongly influenced by substitution, a systematic investigation of structure-property relationships is essential to accurately predict performance and design optimized storage systems. We report th

Computational investigation of photoswitch conjugates for molecular solar energy storage.

Solar energy conversion and storage are vital for combating climate change. Molecular solar thermal systems offer a promising solution, where energy is stored in molecular compounds. This study investigates dyad molecular photoswitches by combining bicyclooctadiene/tetracyclooctane and dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene systems with phenyl and cyano groups. Density functional theory calculations were employed to determine molecular properties and consider solvation effects in toluene and dichloromethane. The results show that the combined systems have a predicted storage energy of up to 206.14 k

Quantum well-inspired energy level design in multicomponent organic solar cells for improved energy loss management.

The power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs) has significantly improved since PM6:Y6 was introduced. However, the persistently inadequate energy loss management would constrain further advances towards >21% efficiency devices. Based on spin statistics, bimolecular recombination predominantly generates triplet-character intermediate states, which commonly undergo back charge transfer (BCT) followed by localized triplet formation and non-radiative decay, resulting in significant energy losses. Here, we introduced a strategy based on partial quantum confinement effects (PQCEs) th

Sustainable hydroponic production using solar energy and treated greywater within the water-energy-food-environment nexus.

Addressing the Water-Energy-Food-Environment (WEFE) nexus is critical for sustainable resource management. This study investigates a novel hydroponic system integrating photovoltaic (PV) solar energy and treated greywater (System-II), compared to a grid-powered system (System-I). Key performance indicators, including energy consumption, energy efficiency indices, and CO2 emissions, are evaluated for the two systems. Additionally, the morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters of lettuce are measured. System-II achieved superior energy performance, with an energy ratio of 0.11, en

Self-Activated Energy Release Cascade from Anthracene-Based Solid-State Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage Systems.

We introduce donor-acceptor substituted anthracenes as effective molecular solar thermal energy storage compounds that operate exclusively in the solid state. The donor-acceptor anthracenes undergo visible light-induced [4+4] cycloaddition reaction, producing metastable cycloadducts, dianthracenes with quaternary carbons, and storing photon energy. The triggered cycloreversion of dianthracenes to anthracenes discharges the stored energy as heat in the order of 100 kJ/mol (200 J/g). The series of compounds displays remarkable self-heating, or cascading heat release, upon the initial triggering.

Water-Soluble Azobenzene-Based Solar Thermal Fuels with Improved Long-Term Energy Storage and Energy Density.

Azobenzene (azo)-based solar thermal fuels (STFs) have been developed to harvest and store solar energy. However, due to the lipophilicity and low energy density of azo-based STFs, the derived devices demand a large amount of toxic organic solvents for continuous and scalable energy storage. Herein, we report an ionic strategy to prepare water-soluble azo-based STFs (WASTFs) with improved energy storage performance, which can be realized through a facile quaternization reaction using commercial reagents. A family of WASTFs were synthesized, and all of them showed good water solubility, long-te

Solar Energy Storage in Polyoxometalate for On-Demand Hydrogen Transportation and Evolution.

Widespread application of solar-driven hydrogen production is hindered by critical limitations: the inherent safety risks of high-pressure H2 storage/transport, and the intermittent nature of solar energy. To address these challenges, we develop a solar energy storage and on-demand hydrogen production system by synergistically integrating commercial polyoxometalate (NH4)6H2W12O40 (W12) with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). This system demonstrates remarkable efficiency in storing solar energy as electrons within W12 during illumination. These stored electrons can be released on demand in the
