Drought Dominates over Warming in Structuring Growth and Defense in Invasive Solidago canadensis vs. Native Solidago decurrens.

Plants are increasingly exposed to simultaneous warming, drought, and herbivory, yet how invasive and native species regulate carbon allocation under these interacting stressors remains poorly understood. We conducted a full-factorial greenhouse experiment manipulating temperature (+3 °C), soil water availability, and herbivory to compare carbon allocation responses in the invasive Solidago canadensis and its native congener S. decurrens. Drought emerged as the dominant driver of carbon reallocation, shifting investment away from biomass production and photosynthetic function toward belowgroun

Ecotoxicological effect of invasive Solidago canadensis L. and hybrid Solidago x niederederi Khek derived extracts toward selected aquatic, semi-aquatic and soil invertebrates.

Allelopathy is associated with biodiversity loss and assemblage changes in Solidago invaded plots. Although plant-allelopathic effects are well documented, little is known about the toxicity of goldenrod allelochemicals to invertebrates, despite its high biomass production and release of bioactive compounds via volatilization, root exudation or during decomposition, whereas the lack of information is especially evident for the new hybrid S. × niederederi. We conducted a laboratory experiment to assess the effect of water extracts and essential oils derived from the invasive Solidago canadensis

Allelopathic Effect of Humulus scandens Stem and Leaf Extract on Solidago canadensis.

Solidago canadensis is one of the most destructive invasive plants in China, and current physical and chemical control methods are often costly, inefficient, and ecologically risky, highlighting the urgent demand for green and efficient ecological alternatives. The native vine Humulus scandens exhibits strong allelopathic potential. In this study, allelochemicals from its leaves and stems were extracted using petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and n-hexane. Their allelopathic effects on S. canadensis were systematically evaluated through seed germination, seedling growth, and rhizome p

Impacts of ramet density and herbivory on floral volatile emissions and seed production in Solidago altissima.

PREMISE: Plants produce an array of floral olfactory and visual cues to attract pollinators, including volatile organic compounds (VOC), which mediate plant-pollinator interactions and may be influenced by herbivory and neighboring plants. Consequently, these factors may affect plant fitness by disrupting pollination. However, most evidence comes from controlled experiments, limiting our understanding of how VOCs function in natural populations. This study investigated how herbivory and conspecific ramet density influence floral VOC profile, pollination, and seed production in a naturally occu

Impact of Solidago virgaurea Extract on Biofilm Formation for ESBL-Pseudomonas aeruginosa: An In Vitro Model Study.

The increasing disparity between antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the development of new antimicrobials continues to pose a significant global health concern. However, plant extracts have shown promise in combating this issue either through their inherent antimicrobial activity or by serving as potential reservoirs of effective antimicrobial compounds. These compounds have the ability to target pathogenic biofilms and inhibit the production of extended-spectrum β -lactamases (ESBLs). However, there is limited research available on the antibacterial properties of goldenrod extract. Thus, the

Long-Term Warming Suppresses Nitrogen-Fixation Gene Transcription in the Rhizosphere of Invasive Plant Solidago canadensis.

Climate warming can enhance the growth performance of invasive plants, potentially increasing their nitrogen (N) demand. However, whether this additional demand is supported by free-living N fixation remains unclear. Here, we used a 12-year warming experiment to determine how warming affected diazotrophic abundance, community composition, and nifH transcription in the roots and rhizosphere of the invasive plant Solidago canadensis during the growing and flowering stages. While warming increased plant biomass, it did not increase diazotrophic abundance or nifH transcription in either roots or r

Multivariate Statistical Analysis of Solidago canadensis L. Essential Oil and Its Antifungal Mechanism Against Mulberry Sclerotinia Diseases.

Ciboria shiraiana (C. shiraiana), a pathogenic fungus, is a major threat to mulberry trees, causing mulberry sclerotinia diseases. Current control strategies primarily rely on chemical pesticides, whose long-term use leads to adverse effects such as pesticide residues, environmental pollution, and pathogen resistance. This study aimed to develop a green pesticide derived from the essential oil (EOs) of Solidago canadensis L. (S. canadensis L.) and to analyze its antifungal mechanism. SLEOs were extracted from flowers, leaves, and stems of S. canadensis L. via hydro-distillation. Their chemical

A combination of Populus tremula, Solidago virgaurea and Fraxinus excelsior as an anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic drug. A short review.

Anti-inflammatory properties of Populus tremula are mainly deduced from its components, the well investigated salicylates. Solidago extracts have spasmolytic, antihypertensive and diuretic effects. Fraxinus excelsior itself has hardly been investigated, but its coumarin components proved to have a variety of pharmacological properties, i.e. inhibition of T-cell activation and of the arachidonic acid cascade. Phytodolor N (abbreviated as PD) is a combination of the above mentioned plants. Various in vitro and especially in vivo studies proved its anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic properties,

Phytochemical Analysis and Chymotrypsin Inhibitory Potential of Galium sp. and Solidago sp. via Effect-Directed HPTLC Bioassay.

Chymotrypsin inhibitors were initially considered mainly as anti-nutritional factors. However, the potential for their use as therapeutics has been recognized, particularly in the control of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and inflammatory processes. The search for new, effective, and safe chymotrypsin inhibitors has become important not only for food and feed safety reasons, but also in the search for new compounds with potential for use in the pharmaceutical industry. Oxidative stress is also an integral etiological factor in the development of the aforementioned pathological conditions.
