Solitary fibrous tumor.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare tumor of mesenchymal origin that account for less than 2% of all soft tissue masses. Initially identified in the pleura, SFT has been identified in multiple anatomic locations and can arise anywhere in the body. The varying histologic features along with non-specific means of identification have led SFT to be associated with several different names. Over the last several decades, sustained advances through research and technology have led to more reliable methods for differentiating this distinct soft tissue tumor. Advances specifically in immunohistochem

Clinicopathologic correlates of solitary fibrous tumors.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare fibrous neoplasms. Since their initial description as arising from the pleura, SFTs have been reported at a wide range of anatomic sites. To the authors's knowledge, there are no large series reporting both thoracic and extrathoracic SFTs nor are there any large series that analyze clinicopathologic correlates of tumor behavior. METHODS: Institutional soft tissue tumor and pathology databases were reviewed to identify patients. Pathologic material was reviewed by an experienced soft tissue pathologist and scored for the presence of a histolo

Solitary Fibrous Tumors of the Pleura.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTP) are rare neoplasms. We present a case of a 53-year-old female presenting to the pulmonary clinic after an incidental finding of a right-sided chest wall tumor on a chest X-ray. A CT scan of the chest showed a pleural-based right upper lung mass; a biopsy of the mass was consistent with a solitary fibrous tumor.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare neoplasm of the pleura. Although an increasing number of case series have been reported in recent years, so far clinical behavior is still unpredictable. The following article presents a detailed review of the recent larger series of SFTP with particular attention to the clinical presentation, pathologic characteristics and surgical features in order to define more precisely the long-term outcome after treatment of this rare entity. RECENT FINDINGS: Usually, after a complete surgical resection a very long survival could

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura.

Two cases of female patients with solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura are described. Chest radiography and computed tomography showed the presence of a giant mass with inhomogeneous density in the hemithorax in both cases. Transthoracic needle biopsy of the masses showed benign fibrous tissue. Both patients underwent thoracotomy. The tumors arose from the visceral pleura, were peduncular, appeared well-circumscribed with exterior surface smooth, firm and multinodular. The size of tumors were 16x11x6 cm and 15x11x4.5 cm, weighed 650 g and 573 g and both were successfully resected. The patholog

Solitary fibrous tumor of the caruncle: a solitary location.

A 78-year-old Caucasian male presented with diplopia and decreased vision in the left eye for 1 month, in addition to a painless fleshy lesion in the inner corner of the left eye for 3-month duration. His best-corrected visual acuity was 20/40 and 20/50. Slit lamp examination revealed a left medial conjunctival and caruncular lesion, measuring 6 mm by 4 mm. Histology of the excised mass showed a cellular submucosal spindle cell neoplasm without cytologic atypia and rare mitoses, immunohistologically diffusely positive for CD34 and STAT6, and negative for SMA. Based on these findings, solitary

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura presenting satellite tumors.

A 29-year-old man presented with a mass in the left lower lung field on a chest radiograph obtained during a medical checkup. Computed tomography revealed a tumor adjacent to the diaphragm. A sessile tumor measuring 10.5 x 8.5 x 4.5 cm arising from the parietal pleura was resected. The tumor was accompanied by several little tumors on the nearby diaphragm. Pathologically, the major tumor consisted of typical spindle-shaped cells with myxoid degeneration. There was no increased cellularity, cellular pleomorphism, or a high mitotic count. In immunohistochemical studies, the spindle cells showed

Orbital solitary fibrous tumor.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare borderline mesenchymal tumor typically arising in the pleura and involving the orbit as its most common extra-pleural location. CASE DESCRIPTION: We herein describe two cases of orbital SFT arising in both a 69-year-old woman presenting with progressive proptosis of the left eye and a 49-year-old woman presenting with binocular diplopia. The diagnoses relied on histopathological analysis of biopsy samples. Because of the poor local prognosis, we decided to perform an orbital exenteration in the first case. In the second case, a complete res

Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Mandible.

A 41-year-old woman presented with a facial asymmetry in the mental region and a painful, well-circumscribed, tender mass in the right lower buccal vestibule, associated with extensive ill-defined bone rarefaction with subtle cortical bone resorption. Microscopically, a proliferation of bland spindle cells interspersed with collagen fibers and prominent staghorn-like blood vessels was observed. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed strong positivity for CD34, Bcl-2, CD99, and STAT-6, confirming the diagnosis of Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT). Conservative surgical enucleation was performed, and

[Solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma].

Solitary fibrous tumor(SFT)/hemangiopericytoma(HPC)is a rare mesenchymal tumor with propensity for recurrence and metastasis. Although SFT and HPC were initially considered to be distinct entities, the identification of NAB2-STAT6 fusion as a definitive molecular alteration in both tumors has led to their integration into one disease entity, for both meningeal and non-meningeal lesions. This fusion leads to a nuclear relocation of the STAT6 protein and is detectable with immunohistochemistry. STAT6 immunohistochemistry has been shown to have excellent sensitivity and specificity for histologic

Solitary fibrous tumor of the ovary.

Solitary fibrous tumors commonly occur in the pleura and are rare elsewhere, especially in the female genital system. We present a case of a solitary fibrous tumor arising from the ovary in a young female in the reproductive age group. The tumor could be excised laparoscopically. We also describe the histopathological and immunohistochemical features that can help establish its diagnosis.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the kidney.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an unusual spindle cell neoplasm rarely described in the kidney. Usually occurring in the pleura, it has also been described in various extrapleural sites. We report a rare case of SFT of the kidney fortuitously found in a 55-year-old patient. The imaging features are illustrated. The definite diagnosis was made through histological and immunohistochemical study after radical nephrectomy.

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura].

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare tumors originating from the mesenchymal cells of the submesothelial tissue of the pleura. In half of the cases, the neoplasm presents as an asymptomatic mass, often with quite large dimensions. It is a benign tumor in 80% of the cases and even when considered malignant has a good prognosis if totally removed. We present the case of a 78-year-old female, who was evaluated for lower respiratory infection, in whom the diagnosis of Giant Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Pleura was made. She was submitted to surgical en bloc resection and is asymptomatic

Solitary fibrous tumor of the skin.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon tumor initially reported in the pleura but recently described in other sites of the body. We report a SFT of the skin that presented as painless nodule located in the right cheek in a 56-year-old woman. Histologically, the tumor was composed of spindle-shaped cells arranged in a patternless pattern of short and narrow fascicles with interspersed bundles of thick collagen, and numerous blood vessels with a focally hemangiopericytoma-like appearance. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells strongly expressed vimentin, CD34 and bcl-2. The lesion was exci
