On the geometry of somatosensory representations in the Cortex.

The processing of somatosensory information in the cortex is often described using body maps, where adjacent cortical regions correspond to adjacent body parts. Additionally, the somatosensory cortex follows a hierarchical structure, which extends from the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) to higher cortical regions. While previous studies have identified multiple body maps and various hierarchy relations, the large-scale organization of these maps and their interactions have been less explored. Using functional MRI with full-body light touch stimulation, we discovered that in S1, body and hie

Somatosensory evoked potentials after removal of somatosensory cortex in man.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median nerve, ulnar nerve, thumb, middle finger, and posterior tibial nerve stimulation were recorded in a patient with a discrete resection of part of the postcentral somatosensory cortex as a treatment for focal epilepsy. Comparison of the different stimulation sites confirmed electrophysiologically the restricted locus of the lesion. The results strongly suggest that the early negative component (N20) and subsequent components recorded postcentrally are of cortical origin and depend upon postcentral gyrus cytoarchitectonic areas 3, 2, and 1. Somatosensory responses in a human motor cortex.

Somatic sensory signals provide a major source of feedback to motor cortex. Changes in somatosensory systems after stroke or injury could profoundly influence brain computer interfaces (BCI) being developed to create new output signals from motor cortex activity patterns. We had the unique opportunity to study the responses of hand/arm area neurons in primary motor cortex to passive joint manipulation in a person with a long-standing brain stem stroke but intact sensory pathways. Neurons responded to passive manipulation of the contralateral shoulder, elbow, or wrist as predicted from prior st

The organizational variability of the rodent somatosensory cortex.

Rodentia is the largest mammalian order, with more than 2,000 species displaying a great diversity of morphological characteristics and living in different ecological niches (terrestrial, semi-aquatic, arboreal and fossorial). Analysis of the organization of the somatosensory areas in six species of rodents allowed us to demonstrate that although these species share a similar neocortical blueprint with other eutherian mammals, important differences exist between homologous areas across different species, probably as a function of both lifestyle and peripheral sensory specializations typical of

The somatosensory cortex in multiple system atrophy.

In multiple system atrophy (MSA), it has been accepted that the motor-related cortical area may degenerate. However, there have been few investigations of the postcentral cortex of the somatosensory area. For this reason, we investigated the effects of MSA on both the precentral and the postcentral cortex and were able to demonstrate degenerative changes in each. Furthermore, our study showed that degeneration of the postcentral cortex preceded that of the precentral cortex. In addition, we showed that the Betz cells were not selectively lost, but merely depleted like other neurons of the deep

Lack of habituation in somatosensory cortex but not in visual cortex of ALS patients.

OBJECTIVE: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a multisystem degenerative disease with extra-motor components. In ALS, there is also hyperexcitability of extra-motor areas. Habituation is defined as ''a response decrement" caused by repeated stimulations. Studies on evoked potential habituation can be conducted to detect cortical excitability. This study aimed to explore lack of habituation in non-motor cortical structures in ALS. METHODS: Twenty-one ALS patients and 14 controls were enrolled. Recordings were obtained in 3 and 10 consecutive blocks (each containing 100 responses) during ri

Contra-lesional somatosensory cortex activity and somatosensory recovery in two stroke patients.

OBJECTIVE: We describe here 2 stroke patients who showed activation of the contra-lesional somatosensory cortex without activation of the ipsi-lesional somatosensory cortex during proprioceptive input on the affected hand. CASE DESCRIPTION: One patient with intracerebral haemorrhage (a 52-year-old man), 1 patient with middle cerebral artery infarct (a 54-year-old man), and 8 control subjects were recruited. The subscale for kinaesthetic sensation (full mark: 24) of the Nottingham Sensory Assessment improved from 2 points (patient 1 and 2; onset) to 8 points (patient 1) and 12 points (patient

Somatotopic organization of human secondary somatosensory cortex.

This fMRI study investigated the human somatosensory system, especially the secondary somatosensory cortex (SII), with respect to its potential somatotopic organization. Eight subjects received electrical stimulation on their right second finger, fifth finger and hallux. Within SII, the typical finding for both fingers was a representation site within the contralateral parietal operculum roughly halfway between the lip of the lateral sulcus and its fundus, whereas the representation site of the hallux was found more medially to this position at the fundus of the lateral sulcus, near the poster

Noninvasive presurgical neuromagnetic mapping of somatosensory cortex.

Rapid presurgical neuromagnetic localization of the somatosensory cortex was performed successfully on five patients with a large-array biomagnetometer by a protocol called magnetic source imaging (MSI). Determination of the location of the central sulcus is important in assessing operative risk and determining the optimal operative approach to structural lesions in the vicinity of the motor strip. The use of magnetic resonance imaging anatomical methods and intraoperative visual identification can be imprecise, whereas invasive localization prolongs operative time, adds cost, and entails adde

Auditory Frequency Representations in Human Somatosensory Cortex.

Recent studies have challenged the traditional notion of modality-dedicated cortical systems by showing that audition and touch evoke responses in the same sensory brain regions. While much of this work has focused on somatosensory responses in auditory regions, fewer studies have investigated sound responses and representations in somatosensory regions. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we measured BOLD signal changes in participants performing an auditory frequency discrimination task and characterized activation patterns related to stimulus frequency using both uni

A Novel Technique for Intraoperative Mapping of the Somatosensory Cortex.

OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative mapping of the nervous system is used to identify "eloquent" cortical areas. In this technical report, we describe a novel way of mapping the somatosensory cortex so that injury to those critical pathways can be avoided. METHODS: An 8-year-old female with drug resistant epilepsy presented for resection of a right posterior parietal focal cortical dysplasia. Left median nerve stimulation was used to record somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) directly from the somatosensory cortex with a strip electrode. A handheld monopolar electrode was also used to record both th

Disinhibition of the primary somatosensory cortex in patients with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic widespread pain condition linked to central sensitization. Altered excitability of sensorimotor cortex has been proposed as an underlying pathology of FM. This study aimed to investigate intracortical excitability of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and its potential role in clinical pain in patients with FM. Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields were recorded in 17 right-handed females with FM and 21 age-, sex-, and handedness-matched healthy control subjects. Paired-pulse median nerve stimulation was delivered to the left and right wrist. We assessed the pe

Reorganization of the human somatosensory cortex in hand dystonia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Abnormalities of finger representations in the somatosensory cortex have been identified in patients with focal hand dystonia. Measuring blood flow with positron emission tomography (PET) can be use to demonstrate functional localization of receptive fields. METHODS: A vibratory stimulus was applied to the right thumb and little finger of six healthy volunteers and six patients with focal hand dystonia to map their receptive fields using H2 (15)O PET. RESULTS: The cortical finger representations in the primary somatosensory cortex were closer to each other in patients

Localization of palatal area in human somatosensory cortex.

To determine the 'hard palate representing' area in the primary somatosensory cortex, we recorded somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields from the cortex in ten healthy volunteers, using magnetoencephalography. Following electrical stimulation of 3 sites on the hard palate (the first and third transverse palatine ridges, and the greater palatine foramen), magnetic responses showed peak latencies of 15, 65, and 125 ms. Equivalent current dipoles for early magnetic responses were found along the posterior wall of the inferior part of the central sulcus. These dipoles were localized anterior-inferio

Bilateral representations of touch in the primary somatosensory cortex.

According to current textbook knowledge, the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) supports unilateral tactile representations, whereas structures beyond SI, in particular the secondary somatosensory cortex (SII), support bilateral tactile representations. However, dexterous and well-coordinated bimanual motor tasks require early integration of bilateral tactile information. Sequential processing, first of unilateral and subsequently of bilateral sensory information, might not be sufficient to accomplish these tasks. This view of sequential processing in the somatosensory system might therefore be

Sharing social touch in the primary somatosensory cortex.

Touch has an emotional and communicative meaning, and it plays a crucial role in social perception and empathy. The intuitive link between others' somatosensations and our sense of touch becomes ostensible in mirror-touch synesthesia, a condition in which the view of a touch on another person's body elicits conscious tactile sensations on the observer's own body [1]. This peculiar phenomenon may implicate normal social mirror mechanisms [2]. Here, we show that mirror-touch interference effects, synesthesia-like sensations, and even phantom touches can be induced in nonsynesthetes by priming th

Representation of the ear in human primary somatosensory cortex.

We studied 13 healthy subjects with a multichannel magnetoencephalography (MEG) system to investigate the somatotopic representation of the ear in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI). We stimulated three parts of the left ear: the helix, the lobulus, and the tragus. The somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) were successfully measured in 7 of 13 subjects. Short-latency responses were analyzed using both single dipole and multidipole models (brain electric source analysis, BESA). From the single dipole model, the equivalent current dipole (ECD) following the helix stimulation was estimat

Plasticity and stability of somatosensory maps in thalamus and cortex.

Work on elucidating the mechanisms of plasticity in somatosensory maps continues apace. Recent work has focused on both the nature of the thalamocortical interactions that determine plasticity, and on the differences between plasticity induced by nerve block or damage versus that induced by experience. Recordings from awake behaving animals have thrown light on the thalamocortical circuit mechanisms that underlie map plasticity; meanwhile, intracellular recordings from cortical slices have thrown light on the precise synaptic mechanisms underlying plasticity.
