Neural correlates of seed-eating in songbirds.

Some granivorous songbirds remove the hard husk of seeds before swallowing. This dehusking behaviour is a complex sensorimotor task that requires precise coordination of the beak and tongue, and extensive tactile feedback. Here, we tested whether the evolution of dehusking behaviour is linked to changes in brainstem nuclei controlling beak-tongue movements and intra-oral somatosensory inputs. We measured the volumes of the principal sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve (PrV), as well as the trigeminal and facial motor nucleus, across 92 passerine species. We found that species that dehusk s

Mycoplasmal conjunctivitis in songbirds from New York.

A field study was conducted to determine the prevalence of conjunctivitis and Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infections in house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) and other songbirds common to bird feeders in Tompkins County (New York, USA). Eight hundred two individuals of 23 species and nine families of birds were captured and given physical examinations during the 14 mo study beginning in February 1998. Clinical conjunctivitis (eyelid or conjunctival swelling, erythema, and discharge) was observed in 10% (19/196) of house finches examined, and only in the winter months from November to March. U

Sperm as a speciation phenotype in promiscuous songbirds.

Sperm morphology varies considerably among species. Sperm traits may contribute to speciation if they diverge fast in allopatry and cause conspecific sperm precedence upon secondary contact. However, their role in driving prezygotic isolation has been poorly investigated. Here we test the hypothesis that, early in the speciation process, female promiscuity promotes a reduction in overlap in sperm length distributions among songbird populations. We assembled a data set of 20 pairs of populations with known sperm length distributions, a published estimate of divergence time, and an index of fema

Mendelian nightmares: the germline-restricted chromosome of songbirds.

Germline-restricted chromosomes (GRCs) are accessory chromosomes that occur only in germ cells. They are eliminated from somatic cells through programmed DNA elimination during embryo development. GRCs have been observed in several unrelated animal taxa and show peculiar modes of non-Mendelian inheritance and within-individual elimination. Recent cytogenetic and phylogenomic evidence suggests that a GRC is present across the species-rich songbirds, but absent in non-passerine birds, implying that over half of all 10,500 bird species have extensive germline/soma genome differences. Here, we rev

Bridging of cryptic Borrelia cycles in European songbirds.

The principal European vector for Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., the causative agents of Lyme disease, is the host-generalist tick Ixodes ricinus. Almost all terrestrial host-specialist ticks have been supposed not to contribute to the terrestrial Borrelia transmission cycles. Through an experiment with blackbirds, we show successful transmission by the widespread I. frontalis, an abundant bird-specialized tick that infests a broad range of songbirds. In the first phase of the experiment, we obtained Borrelia-infected I. frontalis (infection rate: 19%) and I. ricinus (17%) nymphs by exposing larva

Oxidative stress in songbirds exposed to dietary methylmercury.

Long-term, sublethal methylmercury exposure can cause reproductive depression, immune suppression, endocrine disruption and other problems in birds. We used two biomarkers to detect oxidative stress in livers of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) developmentally exposed to sublethal levels of dietary methylmercury (0.0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, or 2.4 μg/g wet weight in diet). Our findings indicate that young adult finches exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of mercury in ovo and through their diets, exhibited oxidative stress in their livers. We measured the ratio of the antioxidant glu

The vocal organ of hummingbirds shows convergence with songbirds.

How sound is generated in the hummingbird syrinx is largely unknown despite their complex vocal behavior. To fill this gap, syrinx anatomy of four North American hummingbird species were investigated by histological dissection and contrast-enhanced microCT imaging, as well as measurement of vocalizations in a heliox atmosphere. The placement of the hummingbird syrinx is uniquely located in the neck rather than inside the thorax as in other birds, while the internal structure is bipartite with songbird-like anatomical features, including multiple pairs of intrinsic muscles, a robust tympanum an

AAV-mediated transduction of songbird retina.

INTRODUCTION: Genetic manipulation of murine retinal tissue through ocular administration of adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) has become a standard technique to investigate a multitude of mechanisms underlying retinal physiology. Resultantly, developments of recombinant viral vectors with improved transduction efficiency and further methodological improvements have mostly focused on murine tissue, whereas AAVs successfully targeting avian retinae have remained scarce. METHODOLOGY: Using a custom-designed injection setup, we identified a viral serotype with the capability to successfully induce

WDR1 presence in the songbird basilar papilla.

WD40 repeat 1 protein (WDR1) was first reported in the acoustically injured chicken inner ear, and bioinformatics revealed that WDR1 has numerous WD40 repeats, important for protein-protein interactions. It has significant homology to actin interacting protein 1 (Aip1) in several lower species such as yeast, roundworm, fruitfly and frog. Several studies have shown that Aip1 binds cofilin/actin depolymerizing factor, and that these interactions are pivotal for actin disassembly via actin filament severing and actin monomer capping. However, the role of WDR1 in auditory function has yet to be de

Sex steroid hormones and sensorimotor vocal development in songbirds.

Vocal production learning is rare among animals with birdsong and human speech representing two of the clearest examples. There are two phases to this learning process: one involves the formation of a song memory or template, the second is a sensorimotor process requiring the imitation of the template by vocal output that in songbirds results in a stereotypic species-typical song. Recent advances in the understanding of neural processes required for sensorimotor learning, which includes error correction, have not considered the critical action of testosterone that is essential for song crystal

Gut microbiota promote early-life digestive function in songbirds.

The vertebrate digestive tract harbors complex microbial communities whose influences on phenotypes and fitness in non-model organisms remain poorly understood. Here, we show that colonization with gut microbiota is critical for digestive development and function in a non-model songbird, the House sparrow (Passer domesticus). We raised nestlings under sterile (axenic) conditions and compared them to nestlings reconstituted (conventionalized) with microbiota from adult sparrows. Conventionalization drove significant increases in villus length, crypt depth, goblet cell density, and mucosal thick

Susceptibility of wild and domestic songbirds to Usutu virus.

Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging mosquito-borne orthoflavivirus that can cause neuroinvasive disease in humans and wild birds. USUV clusters phylogenetically within the Japanese encephalitis virus serocomplex, sharing antigenic and ecological similarity with West Nile virus (WNV). USUV is maintained in an enzootic cycle primarily involving passerine birds and Culex spp. mosquitoes. USUV was first isolated in South Africa in 1959 and has since spread throughout Africa and Europe, causing mortality and disease in several wild bird populations, specifically the Eurasian blackbird (Turdus merula)

Neuropeptides and reproductive flexibility in songbirds: A mini review.

Synchronization of physiological and behavioral activities associated with avian reproduction requires corresponding changes in the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. This involves complex brain peptidergic pathways, which show spatial and temporal differences in their expression and distribution during the annual reproductive cycle. The well-studied pathways include gonadotropin-releasing and inhibiting hormones (GnRH, GnIH), neuropeptide Y (NPY), cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and other peptides like arginine vasoto

Human mutant huntingtin disrupts vocal learning in transgenic songbirds.

Speech and vocal impairments characterize many neurological disorders. However, the neurogenetic mechanisms of these disorders are not well understood, and current animal models do not have the necessary circuitry to recapitulate vocal learning deficits. We developed germline transgenic songbirds, zebra finches (Taneiopygia guttata) expressing human mutant huntingtin (mHTT), a protein responsible for the progressive deterioration of motor and cognitive function in Huntington's disease (HD). Although generally healthy, the mutant songbirds had severe vocal disorders, including poor vocal imitat

Hybrid songbirds employ intermediate routes in a migratory divide.

Migratory divides are contact zones between populations that use different routes to navigate around unsuitable areas on seasonal migration. Hybrids in divides have been predicted to employ intermediate and potentially inferior routes. We provide the first direct test of this hypothesis, using light-level geolocators to track birds breeding in a hybrid zone between Swainson's thrushes in western Canada. Compared to parental forms, hybrids exhibited increased variability in their migratory routes, with some using intermediate routes that crossed arid and mountainous regions, and some using the

Social performance reveals unexpected vocal competency in young songbirds.

Vocal ontogeny in songbirds provides a good model for understanding how complex motor behavior, including speech, is learned. For birdsong, as for other motor learning, it has generally been assumed that a subject's motor output at any point during learning represents what the subject has learned to produce by that time. Here, we show, however, that juvenile zebra finches partway through song learning, singing immature song, are capable of producing song with much more mature properties, depending on the behavioral context. In these birds, we were able to elicit courtship (female-directed) son

Motor mechanisms relevant to auditory-vocal interactions in songbirds.

Vocal learning through imitation underlies both human speech acquisition and song acquisition in oscine birds; both processes depend on auditory information. In songbirds, a specialized forebrain pathway is responsible for producing the learned temporal and acoustic features of vocalizations, and auditory input reaches every level of this pathway. Nucleus robustus archistriatalis (RA) is the source of the final common output from this pathway; RA is topographically organized into subregions that control the syringeal, respiratory and other effectors involved in vocal production. The acoustic f

The effect of mercury on baseline corticosterone in a breeding songbird.

Although songbirds accumulate mercury at rates equivalent to better-studied aquatic avian species, effects of mercury bioaccumulation in songbirds remain understudied. Little is known about the effects of mercury on endocrine physiology, but recent evidence indicates that mercury may disrupt the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Both field-based correlational studies and a recent dosing experiment suggest that mercury exposure alters levels of the primary avian stress hormone, CORT. We sampled zebra finches that had been dosed with 0, 0.5, or 1.0 ppm dietary methylmercury fo

Novel Rickettsia spp. in two common overwintering North American songbirds.

American robins and dark-eyed juncos migrate across North America and have been found to be competent hosts for some bacterial and viral pathogens, but their contributions to arthropod-borne diseases more broadly remain poorly characterized. Here, we sampled robins and juncos in multiple sites across North America for arthropod-borne bacterial pathogens of public health significance. We identified two novel Rickettsia spp. in one wintering migrant per bird species related to bellii, transitional, and spotted rickettsiae fever groups.
