Sound localization in the alligator.

In early tetrapods, it is assumed that the tympana were acoustically coupled through the pharynx and therefore inherently directional, acting as pressure difference receivers. The later closure of the middle ear cavity in turtles, archosaurs, and mammals is a derived condition, and would have changed the ear by decoupling the tympana. Isolation of the middle ears would then have led to selection for structural and neural strategies to compute sound source localization in both archosaurs and mammalian ancestors. In the archosaurs (birds and crocodilians) the presence of air spaces in the skull

Chickens have excellent sound localization ability.

The mechanisms of sound localization are actively debated, especially which cues are predominately used and why. Our study provides behavioural data in chickens (Gallus gallus) and relates these to estimates of the perceived physical cues. Sound localization acuity was quantified as the minimum audible angle (MAA) in azimuth. Pure-tone MAA was 12.3, 9.3, 8.9 and 14.5 deg for frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz, respectively. Broadband-noise MAA was 12.2 deg, which indicates excellent behavioural acuity. We determined 'external cues' from head-related transfer functions of chickens. Thes

Sound localization in acallosal human listeners.

In order to evaluate the callosal and hemispheric involvement in sound localization, the present study examined response accuracy to auditory targets in acallosal subjects. The primary interest was to determine whether the congenital absence of the corpus callosum affects auditory localization, especially for sounds situated near the midline of auditory space or moving across it. A corollary objective was to examine the possible existence of an hemispheric asymmetry on audio-spatial localization tasks. Four subjects with callosal agenesis paired to four age and IQ-matched controls and 16 norma

Sound localization measured by eye-tracking.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce a new method of measuring sound localization ability based on eye-tracking and to test this method by analysing the influence of mild induced conductive hearing loss on sound localization. DESIGN: Sound signals were presented from different angles, and the participant's responses were measured using an eye-tracking device. For validation, a comparison of responses to visual stimuli was performed. To test the clinical application of this method, a mild conductive hearing loss was simulated, and the impact of this change on sound localization was measured. STUDY SAMPLE:

Sound Localization Strategies in Three Predators.

In this paper, we compare some of the neural strategies for sound localization and encoding interaural time differences (ITDs) in three predatory species of Reptilia, alligators, barn owls and geckos. Birds and crocodilians are sister groups among the extant archosaurs, while geckos are lepidosaurs. Despite the similar organization of their auditory systems, archosaurs and lizards use different strategies for encoding the ITDs that underlie localization of sound in azimuth. Barn owls encode ITD information using a place map, which is composed of neurons serving as labeled lines tuned for prefe

Speech versus noise in pediatric sound localization.

BACKGROUND: Accurate sound localization is essential for children's communication, safety, and learning. While noise stimuli are commonly used in directional hearing tests in clinical settings, speech stimuli may offer more child-friendly assessments. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare sound localization performance using noise and word stimuli across several groups of children with different types of hearing. METHODS: A total of 108 children participated in the study: 31 normal-hearing children aged 6-10 (Ref6-10), 32 children aged 6-10 with hearing aids (HA6-10), and 45 children aged

Sound localization. Part II: a clinical procedure.

Difficulty in localizing sound has been shown to be associated with severe unilateral hearing impairment, middle-ear conditions and lesions of the cerebello-pontine angle. This was in contrast to the performance of subjects with cochlear lesions and certain brain conditions who had mainly normal ability to localize sound. The investigation appeared to indicate that a sound localization test in the horizontal plane using low frequency stimuli may be a useful addition to the test battery employed in the differential diagnosis of cochlear and retrocochlear lesions involving the cerebello-pontine

Comparison of two response tracking methods for sound localization with concealed sound sources.

Accurate measurement of sound localization depends not only on the acoustic setup but also on the response method used to report the perceived source direction, particularly when visual cues from loudspeaker arrays are minimized. This study compared two response tracking methods specifically designed for concealed horizontal loudspeaker arrays: An egocentric LED-based method and an exocentric tablet-based method. Both methods are compact and require moderate technical effort compared to high-end solutions such as head- or eye-tracking systems. 20 normal-hearing participants completed free-fiel

Optimal Sound Presentation Level for Sound Localization Testing in Unilateral Conductive Hearing Loss.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the optimal sound presentation level for sound localization testing to assess the effect of hearing interventions in individuals with unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL). Methods: Nine participants with normal hearing were tested, and simulated two-stage UCHL was created using earmuffs and earplugs. We created two types of masking conditions: (1) only an earplug inserted, and (2) an earplug inserted with an earmuff worn. A sound localization test was performed for each condition. The sound presentation levels were 40, 45, 50, 55, 60,

[Sound localization in patients with asymmetrical hearing loss].

Good directional hearing ability demands good and symmetrical hearing in both ears. We report the effect of impaired hearing on the directional hearing ability of 98 patients, especially of patients with bilateral asymmetrical hearing loss. The directional testing device included 12 loudspeakers placed at 30 degree intervals in a circle with a diameter of 3.25 m, whose centre lay between the ears of the patient. In included an audiometer for producing the signals, an amplifier and a PDP11/23 computer interfaced to a loudspeaker switch bank. The subject's answers to 60 directionally randomized

Sound localization in wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus).

The ability of three wild Norway rats to localize sound was determined for single clicks and 100-ms white noise bursts. Chance level localization thresholds were 12 degrees for clicks and 9.7 degrees for white noise. A comparison of these results with published localization thresholds for the domestic albino rat yielded no significant differences. It appears that the combined effects of domestication and albinism have not affected the ability of the laboratory rat to localize sound. Instead, the relatively poor localization acuity of these rats appears to be part of the normal variation in sou

Heart Sound Localization in Respiratory Sound Based on a New Computationally Efficient Entropy Bound.

A new entropy bound with low computational complexity for differential Shannon entropy estimation with kernel density approach is proposed in this study, which is based on defining a bound for the Kullback-Leibler divergence between two Gaussian mixture models. The proposed entropy bound is derived to provide computational efficiency without decreasing the accuracy in detecting heart sound segments in respiratory sound. It is shown both theoretically and experimentally that using the proposed bound in an adaptive threshold-based detection method gives very similar performance compared to that

Contralateral Routing of Signal Disrupts Monaural Sound Localization.

OBJECTIVES: In the absence of binaural hearing, individuals with single-sided deafness can adapt to use monaural level and spectral cues to improve their spatial hearing abilities. Contralateral routing of signal is the most common form of rehabilitation for individuals with single-sided deafness. However, little is known about how these devices affect monaural localization cues, which single-sided deafness listeners may become reliant on. This study aimed to investigate the effects of contralateral routing of signal hearing aids on localization performance in azimuth and elevation under monau

Effects of sound source localization of masking sound on perception level of simulated tinnitus.

Tinnitus therapies have been combined with the use of varieties of sound/noise. For masking external sounds, location of the masker in space is important; however, effects of the spatial location of the masker on tinnitus are less understood. We aimed to test whether a masking sound location would affect the perception level of simulated tinnitus. The 4 kHz simulated tinnitus was induced in the right ear of healthy volunteers through an open-type earphone. White noise was presented to the right ear using a single-sided headphone or a speaker positioned on the right side at a distance of 1.8 m

Sound localization, sound lateralization, and binaural masking level differences in young children with normal hearing.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, procedures for measuring sound localization, sound lateralization, and binaural masking level differences (BMLDs) in young children were developed. Sensitivity for these tasks was assessed in large groups of children between 4 and 9 yr of age to investigate potential developmental trends. DESIGN: Sound localization was measured in the sound field, with a broadband bell-ring presented from one of nine loudspeakers positioned in the frontal horizontal field. A group of 33 children between 4 and 6 yr of age and 5 adults took part in this experiment. Sound lateralizatio

Partial Learning in Human Sound Localization With Asymmetric Ears.

The brain computes sound location from auditory spatial cues. Humans and barn owls both localize sounds accurately, yet they rely on fundamentally different cue configurations shaped by their ear anatomy and neural circuitry. In humans, symmetrical ears provide interaural time and level differences (ITD and ILD) for horizontal localization, while vertical localization depends primarily on high-frequency, monaural spectral cues generated by the pinnae. Barn owls, by contrast, possess asymmetrical ears and use binaural cues for both azimuth and elevation. Because auditory pathways are tuned to s
