Ethnicity and cardiovascular risk: variations in people of African ancestry and South Asian origin.

Mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and end-stage renal failure are high in South Asian migrants in the UK. This is associated with high prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. These seem to be manifestations of a metabolic syndrome with insulin resistance (hyperinsulinaemia) and central obesity (based on high waist-to-hip ratio rather than on conventional measures of body mass index). This is associated with sedentary lifestyle, high serum triglycerides and low HDL-cholesterol. Mortality from stroke and end-stage renal failure are high in black migrants to the UK (both Caribb

Low prevalence of juvenile-onset Behcet's disease with uveitis in East/South Asian people.

AIM: There is little information on the demographic and clinical characteristics of Behçet's disease in children in different parts of the world. We sought to provide this information through a questionnaire survey of specialist eye centres. METHODS: Descriptive questionnaires were collected from 25 eye centres in 14 countries. The questionnaire surveyed details of juvenile-onset Behçet's disease with uveitis. Ethnic groups, clinical features, treatments and prognosis of paediatric-age Behçet's disease were examined on a worldwide scale. RESULTS: The clinical data of 135 juvenile-onset and 1

Factors associated with bacterial sexually transmitted infections among people of South Asian ethnicity in England.

OBJECTIVES: Despite being the largest ethnic minority group in England, South Asians have historically had low levels of utilisation of sexual health services (SHS) and sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnoses, although recent data suggests this may be changing. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with a bacterial STI diagnosis among South Asians attending SHS in England. METHODS: Using data from the GUMCAD STI Surveillance system, a descriptive analysis of South Asians attending SHS in England in 2019 was carried out. Factors associated with a bacterial STI diagnosis wer

Risk of forced marriage amongst people with learning disabilities in the UK: Perspectives of South Asian carers.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities are at increased risk of forced marriage compared to those without intellectual disabilities. In the UK, this risk is particularly, though not exclusively, associated with South Asian communities and is linked to the desire to secure long-term care. METHOD: Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were undertaken with South Asian parents and family carers (n = 22) of adults with intellectual disability and the resultant data thematically analysed. RESULTS: Although securing care for their intellectually disabled relative was identified as

Culturally adapted post-diagnostic dementia support for South Asian people living with dementia and caregivers: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: The number of minority ethnic people living with dementia (PLWD) in the UK is predicted to rise to 50 000 by 2026 and 172 000 by 2051. As the global population ages, there is a greater need to develop culturally appropriate post-diagnostic support for PLWD from minority ethnic backgrounds. METHODS: A rapid review was conducted of culturally adapted post-diagnostic dementia support for South Asian people with dementia and carers. Eight electronic databases were searched from inception until 16 September 2025. Databases included Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literatu

Representation of people of South Asian origin in cardiovascular outcome trials of glucose-lowering therapies in Type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: Our aim was to investigate the proportional representation of people of South Asian origin in cardiovascular outcome trials of glucose-lowering drugs or strategies in Type 2 diabetes, noting that these are among the most significant pieces of evidence used to formulate the guidelines on which clinical practice is largely based. METHODS: We searched for cardiovascular outcome trials in Type 2 diabetes published before January 2015, and extracted data on the ethnicity of participants. These were compared against expected values for proportional representation of South Asian individuals, b

Diabetes and Foot Health Among South Asian People Seeking Asylum in the United Kingdom: A Theory-Informed Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Globally, it is estimated that, as of June 2025, 8.42 million people were seeking asylum due to persecution and political instability. Those seeking protection in other countries can present with undiagnosed complex health needs, including type 2 diabetes mellitus. Yet diabetes related foot health and footwear remain poorly understood in this population. This scoping review mapped evidence on diabetes, foot health and footwear among adults seeking asylum in high-income countries, with attention to postmigration factors and diabetes-related stigma. METHODS: Arksey and O'Malley's sc

Incidence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in South Asian and Chinese People: A Population-Based Cohort Study from Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is now a global disease with incidence increasing throughout Asia. AIM: To determine the incidence of IBD among South Asians and Chinese people residing in Ontario, Canada's most populous province. METHODS: All incident cases of IBD in children (1994-2015) and adults (1999-2015) were identified from population-based health administrative data. We classified South Asian and Chinese ethnicity using immigration records and surnames. We determined standardized incidence of IBD and adjusted incidence rate ratio (aIRR) in South Asians and Chinese compar

The dietary practices and beliefs of British South Asian people living with inflammatory bowel disease: a multicenter study from the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Epidemiological associations have implicated factors associated with Westernization, including the Western diet, in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The role of diet in IBD etiopathogenesis, disease control and symptom management remains incompletely understood. Few studies have collected data on the dietary habits of immigrant populations living with IBD. Our aim was to describe the dietary practices and beliefs of British South Asians with IBD. METHODS: A 30-item questionnaire was developed and consecutively administered to 255 British South Asians with

The role of salt intake and salt sensitivity in the management of hypertension in South Asian people with chronic kidney disease: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of salt restriction to lower blood pressure (BP) in Bangladeshi patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that a tailored intervention intended to reduce salt intake in addition to standard care will achieve a greater reduction in BP in UK Bangladeshi patients with CKD than standard care alone. DESIGN: A randomised parallel-group controlled trial conducted over a 6 month period. SETTING: A tertiary renal unit based in acute care hospital in East London. PARTICIPANTS: 56 adult participants of Bangladeshi origin w

Diabetogenic elevated childhood total fat in South Asian and Black African/Caribbean people relates to adverse early life growth and low socioeconomic position compared with White people in the UK.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Excess type 2 diabetes mellitus in minority ethnic groups remains unexplained, although greater fat mass makes a strong contribution. We hypothesised that height and weight through infancy in South Asian and Black African/Caribbean subgroups is more adverse than in White populations. These, allied to poor socioeconomic position, determine greater fat mass at age 7 years. METHODS: We report a secondary analysis from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, including 12,280 births of White ethnicity, and 358 of Indian, 650 of Pakistani, 268 of Bangladeshi, 163 of Black Caribbean and 277

Perceptions of People From South Asian Backgrounds With Chronic Kidney Disease on Digital Health Interventions: Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Consultation Focus Group.

INTRODUCTION: Digital health interventions (DHIs) are increasingly popular as a potential method to address educational and support needs of individuals with long-term conditions, as they are largely accessible to most people, can be highly effective, and delivered at low cost. We have developed a DHI to better support chronic kidney disease (CKD) self-management and demonstrated its efficacy in a UK-based clinical trial. The trial population, however, was fairly homogeneous, and those from underserved populations (including ethnic minority groups), who would have likely benefited from the DHI

Using a co-production prioritization exercise involving South Asian children, young people and their families to identify health priorities requiring further research and public awareness.

OBJECTIVES: To facilitate South Asian (SA) families and health-care professionals (HCPs) participation in a prioritization exercise to co-produce child health research and public awareness agendas. DESIGN: A three-stage process was adopted involving the following: (i) systematic literature review, (ii) HCP scoping survey and (iii) focus groups of SA adolescents and families. A Punjabi- and Urdu-speaking community facilitator moderated focus groups. A British Sign Language interpreter assisted in the hard of hearing group. Concordant and discordant themes between HCPs and SAs were identified.

How Did Women From South Asian Backgrounds and People Seeking Asylum and Refugees Look After Their Health and the Health of Others During the COVID-19 Pandemic? A Community Research Approach.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on people's lives globally and affected access to, utilisation and the delivery of healthcare. Many communities were disproportionally affected by the pandemic. Community-based research approaches may help address potential healthcare inequities by identifying and understanding people's experiences and needs relating to healthcare access and utilisation. METHODS: For this qualitative study, members of community organisations were trained and supported to interview women from South Asian backgrounds and people seeking asylum and refuge ab
