PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: In recent years, Berger's space (BS), the potential space between the posterior lens capsule and the anterior hyaloid membrane, has received little attention from the ophthalmic clinical community. This is primarily due to the limited documentation, with only a few isolated case reports detailing foreign bodies in this area.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent advances in medical imaging technology have enabled the visualization of the BS under various circumstances. This progress has deepened clinicians' understanding of this elusive structure, allowing ophthalmic surgeons to util

Future research in the neurosciences can best be understood in the context of NASA's life sciences goals in the near term (1990-95), mid term (1995-2000), and long term (2000 and beyond). Since NASA is planning short-duration Spacelab and International Microgravity Laboratory (IML) flights for many years to come, the acute effects of exposure to microgravity will continue to be of experimental and operational interest in the near term. To this end, major new areas of research will be devoted to ground-based studies of preflight adaptation trainers and their efficacy in preventing or reducing t

Research is urged for several motion sickness topics now receiving relatively little attention. The role of the area postrema, if any, is not completely resolved. The hypothesis that the cerebral spinal fluid might be a necessary neurochemical conduit should be confirmed or put to rest. It is surprising that the cerebellum, implicated more than 40 years ago, has not been reevaluated for its role in motion sickness in view of the explosion of new data on this structure. The sensory rearrangement theory, known by several names, needs direct experimental verification. One such experiment should d

The history of manned space flight has repeatedly documented the fact that prolonged sojourn in space causes physiological deconditioning. Physiological deterioration has raised a legitimate concern about man's ability to adequately perform in the course of long missions and even the possibility of leading to circumstances threatening survival. One of the possible countermeasures of physiological deconditioning, theoretically more complete than others presently used since it affects all bodily systems, is artificial gravity. Space stations and spacecrafts can be equipped with artificial gravit

A critically important gap in knowledge surrounds the health consequences of exposure to radiation received gradually over time. Much is known about the health effects of brief high-dose exposures, such as from the atomic bombings in Japan, but the concerns today focus on the frequent low-dose exposures received by members of the public, workers, and, as addressed in this paper, astronauts. Additional guidance is needed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for planning long-term missions where the rate of radiation exposure is gradual over years and the cumulative amount

Long-duration spaceflight exposes astronauts to various stressors that can alter human physiology, potentially causing immediate and long-term health effects. These stressors can damage biomolecules, cells, tissues, and organs, leading to adverse outcomes. Developing adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) relevant to radiation exposure can guide research priorities and inform risk assessments of future space exploration activities. Through expert consultation, we developed an AOP network linking 18 key events (KEs) to four non-cancer outcomes: learning and memory impairment, bone loss, abnormal vascu

BACKGROUND: The potential for natural environments to be salutogenic has received growing interest from epidemiologists, but there has been no critical examination of the extent to which associations between green space and health might vary according to the indicator of green space coverage used.
METHODS: Three different indicators of green space coverage were derived for a set of 268 small areas in four cities within Britain. The indicators had different origins and provided a spectrum of sensitivity from larger spaces only, through to ambient greenery. Two indicators reproducible for anywh

Exposure of living organisms to open space requires a high level of tolerance to desiccation, cold, and radiation. Among animals, only anhydrobiotic species can fulfill these requirements. The invertebrate phylum Tardigrada includes many anhydrobiotic species, which are adapted to survive in very dry or cold environmental conditions. As a likely by-product of the adaptations for desiccation and freezing, tardigrades also show a very high tolerance to a number of other, unnatural conditions, including exposure to ionizing radiation. This makes tardigrades an interesting candidate for experiment

Travel to space has overcome unprecedent technological challenges and this has resulted in transfer of these technological results on Earth to better our lives. Health technology, medical devices, and research advancements in human biology are the first beneficiaries of this transfer. The real breakthrough came with the International Space Station, which endorsed multidisciplinary international scientific collaborations and boosted the research on pathophysiological adaptation of astronauts to life on space. These studies evidenced that life in space appeared to have exposed the astronauts to

BACKGROUND: Research-practice partnerships (RPPs) are increasingly recognised for their potential to build research capacity in adult social care (ASC), yet the mechanisms enabling or constraining their impact remain under-explored. This article reports on the SCRiPT study, a National Institute for Health and Care Research-funded RPP in England that utilised a Communities of Practice (CoP) approach.
AIMS: To operationalise an RPP by establishing Research in Practice Teams (RiPTs) - comprising social care professionals, lived experience contributors and academics - and to evaluate the mobilisa

Given the COVID-19 crisis, the importance of space in the global economic system has emerged as critical in a hitherto unprecedented way. Even as large-scale, globally operating digital platform enterprises find new ways to thrive in the midst of a crisis, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) nestled in local economies have proven to be fragile to shocks, causing countless local economies to unravel in the face of severe challenges to survival. Here, we discuss the role of entrepreneurship in re-building local economies that are more resilient. Specifically, we take a spatial perspective

UNLABELLED: Because of the relative infancy of peripheral nerve injury research, there is a lack of standardization of nomenclature and language. The lack of consistency among researchers and publications leads to difficulties assessing outcomes and comparing across patients, surgeons, and interventions.
WHERE ARE WE NOW?: Current efforts in nerve research are focused on determining appropriate-study outcomes and the validation of these for both physicians and patients to reflect the goals of care. Siloed efforts across multiple institutions and specialties limit progress.
WHERE DO WE NEED T

Considering the imminence of long-term space travel, it is necessary to investigate the impact of space microgravity (SPC-µG) in order to determine if this environment has consequences on the astronauts' health, in particular, neural and cognitive functions. Neural stem cells (NSCs) are the basis for the regeneration of the central nervous system (CNS) cell populations and learning how weightlessness impacts NSCs in health and disease provides a critical tool for the potential mitigation of specific mechanisms leading to neurological disorders. In previous studies, we found that exposure to SP

In the endeavour to assess radiation risks for humans in space the concerted action of all stimuli (e.g. radiation and microgravity) has to be known already at a cellular level. The introduction of reporter genes into mammalian cells which allows the visualisation of modified gene expression levels, signal transduction rates and cell metabolism activities will supply basic information on the cellular response to space radiation. The cloning of the gene for green fluorescent protein (GFP) from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria and its subsequent expression in heterologous systems has established

During spaceflight, astronauts are exposed to a variety of unique hazards, including altered gravity fields, long periods of isolation and confinement, living in a closed environment at increasing distances from Earth, and exposure to higher levels of hazardous ionizing radiation. Preserving human health and performance in the face of these relentless hazards becomes progressively more difficult as missions increase in length and extend beyond low Earth orbit. Finding solutions is a significant challenge that is further complicated by logistical issues associated with studying these unique haz

Human exposure to ionizing radiation is one of the acknowledged potential showstoppers for long duration manned interplanetary missions. Human exploratory missions cannot be safely performed without a substantial reduction of the uncertainties associated with different space radiation health risks, and the development of effective countermeasures. Most of our knowledge of the biological effects of heavy charged particles comes from accelerator-based experiments. During the 35th COSPAR meeting, recent ground-based experiments with high-energy iron ions were discussed, and these results are brie

Cephalad redistribution of intravascular and extravascular fluid occurs as a result of weightlessness during spaceflight. This provokes cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary, and autonomic nervous system responses. The resulting altered functional state can result in orthostatic hypotension and intolerance upon landing and return to a gravity environment. In-flight lower body negative pressure (LBNP) transiently restores normal body fluid distribution. Early in the U.S. space program, LBNP was devised as a way to test for orthostatic intolerance. With the development of the Skylab Program and longer
