The three Spacelab D-1 Scientist Astronauts were exposed to a 1 1/2 h 3 g centrifuge run in the supine position, resulting in a linear 3 g acceleration in the x-direction. They used their space experience to evaluate their readapting to normal gravity and compared their observations with 'Space Adaptation Syndrome'. After the centrifuge runs, the vestibular visual system appeared to be modified in a very specific and reproducible manner. Readapting to the normal 1 g environment took at least 6 h. During this period there was a striking similarity to the astronaut's experience during adaptation

The possible negative outcomes of mandibular setback surgery (MSS) on the upper airway (UA) have become an important issue in recent years. The purpose of the present study was to compare the different amounts of MSS and to confirm the accepted maximum amount of mandibular setback by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. An anatomically similar UA model was constructed from magnetic resonance images of a systemically healthy individual. Two out of six models were kept as control models and the remaining four models were created to represent MSS scenarios with different amounts to co

In a recent review on bed rest studies of the past 20 years, it was concluded that head-down bed rest has proved its usefulness as a reliable simulation model for most physiological effects of spaceflight. Much of this research has been conducted to find countermeasures against the negative effects, which are associated with gravitational unloading. There have been partial successes in the prevention of, for example muscle wasting, cardio-vascular deconditioning, adverse metabolic changes, and bone demineralization. Reviews refer to bone-related measurements of the U.S. and Russian space progr

This paper describes the architecture and demonstrates the capabilities of a newly developed, physically-based imaging simulator environment called SISPO, developed for small solar system body fly-by and terrestrial planet surface mission simulations. The image simulator utilises the open-source 3-D visualisation system Blender and its Cycles rendering engine, which supports physically based rendering capabilities and procedural micropolygon displacement texture generation. The simulator concentrates on realistic surface rendering and has supplementary models to produce realistic dust- and gas

A study of the sleep of men in simulated space flight has shown that, during different effects (diminished motor activity, noise, rotation), monotony and time of the exposure is the general pathogenetic factor producing sleep disturbances. The monotony factor was responsible for typical changes in sleep function (difficulty involved in falling asleep, disturbed continuity of sleep as a process, decline in the depth, etc.), whose degree was related not only to the professional importance of the experiment but also to the individual intolerance to the main exposure. In these cases, the action of

Aiming at the requirement of space situational awareness on the full-domain and all-time coverage capability of low Earth orbit space targets and focusing on the design of a space-based space target awareness system, a space target awareness constellation design method based on simulation comparison is put forward. On the basis of systematically analyzing the distribution of space targets' orbits, the low Earth orbit space target surveillance mission mode, key indicators, and constraints of space target surveillance constellations are designed, and three space target surveillance constellation

Gravity plays an important role in the development of life on earth. The effect of gravity on living organisms can be investigated by controlling the magnitude of gravity. Most reduced gravity experiments are conducted on the Lower Earth Orbit (LEO) in the International Space Station (ISS). However, running experiments in ISS face challenges such as high cost, extreme condition, lack of direct accessibility, and long waiting period. Therefore, researchers have developed various ground-based devices and methods to perform reduced gravity experiments. However, the advantage of space conditions f

Microgravity as experienced during spaceflight affects a number of physiological processes in various organs. However, effects on the liver have yet been poorly documented. Nevertheless, the liver is a metabolically highly active organ involved in carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism and xenobiotic biotransformation. The present paper provides an overview of the effects of microgravity on the liver observed in experimental animals during actual spaceflight and upon simulation of microgravity on Earth. These include (i) induction of liver injury and inflammation associated with apoptosis a

INTRODUCTION: Microorganisms can have major impacts on the success of NASA's missions, including the integrity of materials, the protection of extraterrestrial environments, the reliability of scientific results, and maintenance of crew health. Robust cleaning and sterilization protocols for spacecraft and associated environments are currently in place in NASA facilities, but microbial contamination should be further controlled and its impact on NASA's missions and science must be minimized. To address this, air and surfaces across cleanrooms and uncontrolled spaces at the Marshall Space Fligh

As space missions become longer and broader in scope, and as crews become more heterogeneous, psychological and interpersonal factors will take on increasing importance. In order to isolate instructive psychosocial issues and trends, a review was made of over 60 American and Russian simulation and spaceflight studies and reports. Although the missions accomplished most of their goals, psychological and social stresses were evident in the crew members. Psychosocial problems tended to relate to mission length. There was evidence that the use of appropriate psychological testing and interpersonal

Uncertainty surrounding the biological effects of chronic low-dose radiation remains an important challenge in radiation risk assessment, particularly for long-duration space missions. Although adaptive response has been proposed as a potential modifier of radiation-induced cancer risk, its impact on mission-level risk predictions has not been quantitatively evaluated. We developed an exploratory Monte Carlo framework that extends a conventional linear no-threshold-based cancer risk model by incorporating an adaptive response factor (RAF) parameterised by a maximum protection fraction (), a ha

Exposure to ionizing radiation is considered by NASA to be a major health hazard for deep space exploration missions. Ionizing radiation sensitivity is modulated by both genomic and environmental factors. Understanding their contributions is crucial for designing experiments in model organisms, evaluating the risk of deep space (i.e. high-linear energy transfer, or LET, particle) radiation exposure in astronauts, and also selecting therapeutic irradiation regimes for cancer patients. We identified single nucleotide polymorphisms in 15 strains of mice, including 10 collaborative cross model str

In this work we investigated the ability of four extremophilic bacteria from Archaea and Bacteria domains to resist to space environment by exposing them to extreme conditions of temperature, UV radiation, desiccation coupled to low pressure generated in a Mars' conditions simulator. All the investigated extremophilic strains (namely Sulfolobus solfataricus, Haloterrigena hispanica, Thermotoga neapolitana and Geobacillus thermantarcticus) showed a good resistance to the simulation of the temperature variation in the space; on the other hand irradiation with UV at 254 nm affected only slightly

In April 1989 the three European scientist astronauts of the D1 Spacelab Mission were exposed to a 1.5 hours +3G centrifuge run in supine position, resulting in a linear acceleration along the subjects' x-axis. Afterwards, severe motion sickness symptoms were provoked by head movements (Sickness Induced by Centrifugation: SIC). The astronauts mentioned close similarities with what they experienced in space during the D1-Spacelab Mission in 1985, where head movements also provoked motion sickness symptoms (Space Adaptation Syndrome: SAS). Moreover, the astronauts agreed that the rank order of t

BACKGROUND: Exposure to microgravity is marked by enhanced physical inactivity, reduced gravitational loading and fluid shifts. These characteristics provide a unique model for medical research. Dry immersion is used as a ground-based model to simulate and investigate some of the physiological effects of microgravity experienced by astronauts (body fluid shifts, lack of mechanical support, unloading of the musculoskeletal system and hypokinesia). To date, there is limited knowledge about the effect of sex on cardiovascular and metabolic responses to dry immersion.
METHODS: This study integrat

During 120-day and 370 day hypokinesia the possibility has been shown of manifestation of mechanism of immunological regulation of osteoclast functions. Supernatants of mononuclear peripheral blood cells which were in vitro nitrogen-stimulated, had an increased potential for resorption in 45Ca-labelled mice fetus long bone organ cultures. Resorbing activity was increased in mononuclear supernatants from some of the subjects exposed to 120-day hypokinesia and from all subjects exposed to 370-day hypokinesia. This variable returned to base-line values after completion of the bed-rest period. Lym

Aiming at the lightweight design problem of a space camera support structure, this paper proposes a Kriging surrogate model-assisted success history-based adaptive multi-objective differential evolution with whale optimization (KA-SHAMODE-WO), with the minimization of structural mass and the relative displacement of the secondary mirror as optimization objectives, and surface figure accuracy and fundamental frequency as constraints. The surrogate model is used to screen the trial vectors generated in each iteration, and only the predicted non-dominated solutions are subsequently evaluated usin

In order to meet the urgent needs of target image data in the testing of close-range space target situational awareness algorithm, this study develops a method for generating high-fidelity space target simulations by integrating refined wrinkled surface modeling with physics-based optical characterization. The proposed method combines fractal theory and multi-scale superposition principles to model satellite surface topography, integrating both macro-scale bulge-stripe patterns and micro-scale wrinkled textures. By analyzing autocorrelation characteristics of wrinkled structures, a mathematica
