Carcinogens in spacecraft air.

The health effects of long-term exposure to ionizing radiation during spaceflight are a major concern to NASA, especially for missions beyond low-Earth orbit. Experiments involving astronauts will be conducted during the next few years to improve the risk assessment for exposures to ionizing radiation during flights; however, concomitant exposure to certain airborne chemical carcinogens during these experiments could confound the results of radiation experiments. Carcinogens can reach the spacecraft atmosphere from leaking thrusters, from off-gassing materials, from chemical experiments and fr

Metabolism and Biodegradation of Spacecraft Cleaning Reagents by Strains of Spacecraft-Associated Acinetobacter.

Spacecraft assembly facilities are oligotrophic and low-humidity environments, which are routinely cleaned using alcohol wipes for benchtops and spacecraft materials, and alkaline detergents for floors. Despite these cleaning protocols, spacecraft assembly facilities possess a persistent, diverse, dynamic, and low abundant core microbiome, where the Acinetobacter are among the dominant members of the community. In this report, we show that several spacecraft-associated Acinetobacter metabolize or biodegrade the spacecraft cleaning reagents of ethanol (ethyl alcohol), 2-propanol (isopropyl alco

Submarines, spacecraft and exhaled breath.

Foreword The International Association of Breath Research (IABR) meetings are an eclectic gathering of researchers in the medical, environmental and instrumentation fields; our focus is on human health as assessed by the measurement and interpretation of trace chemicals in human exhaled breath. What may have escaped our notice is a complementary field of research that explores the creation and maintenance of artificial atmospheres practised by the submarine air monitoring and air purification (SAMAP) community. SAMAP is comprised of manufacturers, researchers and medical professionals dealing

Revisions to Limits for Methanol in the Air of Spacecraft.

INTRODUCTION: The previous Spacecraft Maximal Allowable Concentrations (SMACs) for methanol were established by characterizing minor effects upon cognitive functions as a no-observable adverse effects level (NOAEL). However, an increasing awareness of the risk posed by Space-Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) has caused NASA Toxicology to reexamine SMACs for methanol because exposure to it can also adversely affect ocular health. An updated review of the literature indicates that no adjustments to the SMACs due to SANS complications were required, while confirming that effects upon the ce

The Evolution of a Spacecraft-Generated Lunar Exosphere.

UNLABELLED: Understanding how spacecraft alter planetary environments can offer important insights into key physical processes, as well as being critical to planning mission operations and observations. In this context, it is important to recognize that almost any powered lunar landing will be an active volatile release experiment, due to the release of exhaust gases during descent. This presents both an opportunity to study the interaction of volatiles with the lunar surface, and a need to predict how non-indigenous gases are dispersed, and how long they persist in the lunar environment. This

Plasma observations at Io with the Galileo spacecraft.

Plasma measurements made during the flyby of Io on 7 December 1995 with the Galileo spacecraft plasma analyzers reveal that the spacecraft unexpectedly passed directly through the ionosphere of Io. The ionosphere is identified by a dense plasma that is at rest with respect to Io. This plasma is cool relative to those encountered outside the ionosphere. The composition of the ionospheric plasmas includes O++, O+ and S++, S+, and SO2+ ions. The plasma conditions at Io appear to account for the decrease in the magnetic field, without the need to assume that Io has a magnetized interior.

Revisions to Limits for 2-Propanol in Spacecraft Air.

INTRODUCTION: The original spacecraft maximum allowable concentrations (SMACs) for 2-propanol were established by NASA in 1996. 2-propanol is an irritant that may also cause central nervous system effects at high concentrations. Limits for 1 and 24 h were set at 400 and 100 ppm based on human exposure data. Limits for 7, 30, and 180 d were set at 60 ppm using the same human data but further accounting for the small number of subjects. METHODS: A literature search was conducted using keywords "isopropyl alcohol" and further narrowed with keywords "toxicity" and "inhalation." Additionally, stud

Consequences of contamination of the spacecraft environment: immunologic consequences.

Long-term space voyages pose numerous known and unknown health hazards, to the human immune system. Well-studied clinical examples of secondary immunodeficiencies created on Earth, lead one to predict that the conditions of prolonged space flight would weaken the human immune responses that normally hold infection and cancer in check. From evidence gathered from humans flown for prolonged periods in space and from human models of space flight studied on Earth it is reasonable to suspect that space travelers to the planet Mars would experience a weakening of immunity. Subtle defects of immune c

Progressive Spatiotemporal Graph Modeling for Spacecraft Anomaly Detection.

The growing number of on-orbit spacecraft and the increasing volume of telemetry data have made intelligent anomaly detection in multi-channel telemetry essential for mission operations. Current spacecraft anomaly detection methods primarily rely on statistical models or time-series deep learning approaches, which often fail to explicitly model spatiotemporal dependencies across multiple telemetry channels. This shortcoming limits their ability to capture the dynamically evolving and intricately coupled relationships between variables. To overcome this limitation, a Progressive Spatiotemporal

Cassini spacecraft reveals global energy imbalance of saturn.

The global energy budget is pivotal to understanding planetary evolution and climate behaviors. Assessing the energy budget of giant planets, particularly those with large seasonal cycles, however, remains a challenge without long-term observations. Evolution models of Saturn cannot explain its estimated Bond albedo and internal heat flux, mainly because previous estimates were based on limited observations. Here, we analyze the long-term observations recorded by the Cassini spacecraft and find notably higher Bond albedo (0.41 ± 0.02) and internal heat flux (2.84 ± 0.20 Wm-2) values than previ

Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentrations for 1-Propanol.

INTRODUCTION: 1-Propanol is a volatile organic compound commonly used as a solvent for industrial and pharmaceutical products. It has been consistently detected at low concentrations in the International Space Station. Although there are published spacecraft maximum allowable concentrations (SMACs) for its less toxic isomer 2-propanol, no SMACs were previously established for 1-propanol. This document reviews existing literature on 1-propanol inhalation toxicity to derive acute and long-term SMACs applicable to off-nominal and nominal scenarios, respectively. METHODS: Electronic databases and

Dry heat sterilization modelling for spacecraft applications.

AIMS: Inactivation processes using heat are widely used for disinfection and sterilization. Dry heat sterilization of spacecraft equipment has been the preferred microbial inactivation method as part of interplanetary travel protection strategies. An antimicrobial model, based on temperature and exposure time based on experimental data, was developed to provide reliable sterilization processes to be used for interplanetary applications. METHODS AND RESULTS: Bacillus atrophaeus spores, traditionally used to challenge dry heat sterilization processes, were tested over a range of temperatures in

Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentrations for Hydrogen Fluoride.

BACKGROUND: Spacecraft maximum allowable concentrations (SMACs) provide guidance on allowable chemical exposures for nominal and emergency situations aboard spacecraft. SMACs are set to mitigate or preclude potential crew health effects and performance degradation. Hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas is highly irritating. Inhaled HF produces irritation primarily in the upper respiratory tract. HF is not routinely present in spacecraft atmospheres. However, it can be produced in spacecraft due to overheating or combustion events involving materials containing fluorinated organics.METHODS: Toxicological

Volatile organic components in the Skylab 4 spacecraft atmosphere.

The volatile organic components in the spacecraft cabin atmosphere of Skylab 4 were trapped on a solid adsorbent at various times during the mission. In post-flight analyses, more than 300 compounds in concentrations from less than 1 ppb up to 8000 ppb could be detected by high-resolution gas chromatography. In the samples of the 11th, 47th, and 77th day of the mission, approximately 100 components in the molecular weight range of 58 to 592 were identified by mass spectrometry. Besides components known from other environments, such as alkanes, alkenes, and alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons, comp

Revisions to Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentrations for Acetaldehyde.

INTRODUCTION: Spaceflight Maximum Allowable Concentrations (SMACs) were previously developed for acetaldehyde in 1994. Acetaldehyde is commonly detected at low levels on the International Space Station, and at higher concentrations it might be expected to cause respiratory and eye irritation. Since 1994, numerous exposure studies in human volunteers and laboratory animals have deepened our understanding of potential effects associated with exposure to acetaldehyde vapor. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using principles of systematic review to identify toxicological da

Metals from spacecraft reentry in stratospheric aerosol particles.

Large increases in the number of low earth orbit satellites are projected in the coming decades [L. Schulz, K.-H. Glassmeier, Adv. Space Res. 67, 1002-1025 (2021)] with perhaps 50,000 additional satellites in orbit by 2030 [GAO, Large constellations of satellites: Mitigating environmental and other effects (2022)]. When spent rocket bodies and defunct satellites reenter the atmosphere, they produce metal vapors that condense into aerosol particles that descend into the stratosphere. So far, models of spacecraft reentry have focused on understanding the hazard presented by objects that survive

Increasing diversity on spacecraft mission teams reduces risk.

Many of the NASA spacecraft sent into Earth orbit and throughout the Solar System are competitively selected and led by principal investigators (PIs). These senior scientists are responsible for directing research activities, managing the use of funds, and reporting to the funding agency. Additionally, the European Space Agency (ESA) has competitively selected missions that are led by ESA-nominated project scientists and include instruments that are overseen by PIs. Usually, the PIs and project scientists form a science working team that provides scientific leadership of the mission. These NAS

A spacecraft shielding model for calculating exposures to radiation.

A spacecraft shielding model for calculating exposure to radiation is proposed. This model is based on the concept of the randomly inhomogeneous character of the material thickness distribution both in separate equipment units and the spacecraft as a whole. This concept has made it possible to obtain the shielding function of an arbitrary point in a spacecraft necessary to calculate the radiation exposure using its mean density, geometry and the ratio of the shielding function dispersion to its mean. This is constant for the spacecraft. This conclusion was verified for several Soviet and U.S.A

[Suprathreshold alternating vestibular stimuli in orbiting spacecrafts].

The actual knowledge of the thresholds of stimulation of the otolith organ is reviewed. A vestibular stimulus unknown until now with a value transgressing the threshold has been found. This gravitational force is due to the gravitation of the sun and is caused by the fact that the spacecraft is moving at a different speed with respect to the sun on one side of the orbit than on the other. The problems of vestibular experiments in space and the connection with space motion sickness due to a field of microgravitation in orbiting spacecrafts is discussed.
