Spatial perception and adaptive sonar behavior.

Bat echolocation is a dynamic behavior that allows for real-time adaptations in the timing and spectro-temporal design of sonar signals in response to a particular task and environment. To enable detailed, quantitative analyses of adaptive sonar behavior, echolocation call design was investigated in big brown bats, trained to rest on a stationary platform and track a tethered mealworm that approached from a starting distance of about 170 cm in the presence of a stationary sonar distracter. The distracter was presented at different angular offsets and distances from the bat. The results of this

Encoding Patterned Spatial Behavior in the Subiculum.

The subiculum, a key component of the medial temporal lobe (MTL), has traditionally been viewed as a relay station for hippocampal output to cortical regions. However, its intricate afferent and efferent connections with diverse brain areas suggest a more independent role in memory and spatial navigation. This review argues that the subiculum encodes regularities in environmental structures (e.g., boundaries, corners, axes) and behavioral patterns imposed by task demands, integrating hippocampal information into schematic representations for goal-directed actions. In conditions where perceptua

Towards a characterization of human spatial exploration behavior.

Spatial exploration is a complex behavior that can be used to gain information about developmental processes, personality traits, or mental disorders. Typically, this is done by analyzing movement throughout an unknown environment. However, in human research, until now there has been no overview on how to analyze movement trajectories with regard to exploration. In the current paper, we provide a discussion of the most common movement measures currently used in human research on spatial exploration, and suggest new indices to capture the efficiency of exploration. We additionally analyzed a la

Spatial Galloping Behavior of Iced Conductors under Multimodal Coupling.

In this study, the coupled ordinary differential equations for the galloping of the first two modes in iced bundled conductors, including in-plane, out-of-plane, and torsional directions, are derived. Furthermore, through numerical analysis, the critical conditions of this modal galloping are determined in the range of wind speed-sag parameters, and the galloping patterns and variation laws in different parameter spaces are analyzed. The parameter space is then divided into five regions according to the different galloping modes. Under the multimodal coupling mechanism of galloping, the impact

Spatial model of Ebola outbreaks contained by behavior change.

The West African Ebola (2014-2016) epidemic caused an estimated 11.310 deaths and massive social and economic disruption. The epidemic was comprised of many local outbreaks of varying sizes. However, often local outbreaks recede before the arrival of international aid or susceptible depletion. We modeled Ebola virus transmission under the effect of behavior changes acting as a local inhibitor. A spatial model is used to simulate Ebola epidemics. Our findings suggest that behavior changes can explain why local Ebola outbreaks recede before substantial international aid was mobilized during the

Rapid Spatial Learning Controls Instinctive Defensive Behavior in Mice.

Instinctive defensive behaviors are essential for animal survival. Across the animal kingdom, there are sensory stimuli that innately represent threat and trigger stereotyped behaviors such as escape or freezing [1-4]. While innate behaviors are considered to be hard-wired stimulus-responses [5], they act within dynamic environments, and factors such as the properties of the threat [6-9] and its perceived intensity [1, 10, 11], access to food sources [12-14], and expectations from past experience [15, 16] have been shown to influence defensive behaviors, suggesting that their expression can be

Spatial modelling of soil mechanical-hydraulic behavior for precision agriculture.

Within-field soil management in Precision Agriculture is still largely based on scalar observations or on geostatistical modelling of individual curve parameters, despite the inherently functional nature of many soil properties. This study proposes a geostatistical framework for the spatial modelling and zoning of function-valued soil descriptors, explicitly accounting for data heterogeneity, spatial non-stationarity, and multiscale variability. Two agronomically relevant functional responses are considered: soil penetration resistance as a function of soil moisture and soil water retention as

Sex differences in giraffe foraging behavior at two spatial scales.

We test predictions about differences in the foraging behaviors of male and female giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi Matchie) that derive from a hypothesis linking sexual size dimorphism to foraging behavior. This body-size hypothesis predicts that males will exhibit specific behaviors that increase their dry-matter intake rate relative to females. Foraging behavior was examined at two hierarchical levels corresponding to two spatial and temporal scales, within patches and within habitats. Patches are defined as individual trees or shrubs and habitats are defined as collections of

Which perseverative behaviors are symptoms of spatial neglect?

Spatial neglect is a characterized by a failure to attend or make movements towards left-sided stimuli. Common paper-and-pencil tasks to diagnose spatial neglect are sensitive to perseverative errors, including additional marks over already cancelled targets and "scribbling" out a target. Here, we examine whether functionally distinct perseverative behaviors are related to spatial neglect. Line cancellation tasks of 45 healthy controls and 220 right-hemisphere stroke survivors were examined for recurrent marks (RM) and continuous marks (CM) perseverations. We found that RM perseveration correl

Brain-wide spatial mapping of oscillatory activity during naturalistic motor behavior.

Understanding oscillatory neural activity associated with motor behavior is greatly contributing to the development of neuroprosthetic systems, robotic interfaces, and advanced neurorehabilitation techniques. Most current knowledge about movement-specific patterns of cortical activity is derived from laboratory experiments using highly standardized, repetitive, and often meaningless movements that are very distinct from natural motor behavior. This is characterized by frequent task switching, diverse kinematics, and endogenous motivation. Whether observed patterns of movement-related neural ac

Effects of moderate prenatal ethanol exposure and age on social behavior, spatial response perseveration errors and motor behavior.

Persistent deficits in social behavior are among the major negative consequences associated with exposure to ethanol during prenatal development. Prior work from our laboratory has linked deficits in social behavior following moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in the rat to functional alterations in the ventrolateral frontal cortex [21]. In addition to social behaviors, the regions comprising the ventrolateral frontal cortex are critical for diverse processes ranging from orofacial motor movements to flexible alteration of behavior in the face of changing consequences. The broader behavi

Cerebellar degeneration averts blindness-induced despaired behavior during spatial task in mice.

Lurcher mutant mice of the C3H strain provide a model of both cerebellar and retinal degeneration. Therefore, they enable the study of the behavior of cerebellar mutants under disabled visual orientation conditions. We aimed to examine cerebellar Lurcher mutants and wild type mice with intact cerebella with and without retinal degeneration employing the rotarod and Morris water maze tests. The positions of the hidden platform and the starting point in the water maze test were stable so as to enable the use of both idiothetic navigation and visual inputs. The Lurcher mice evinced approximately

Neuroligin-1 deletion results in impaired spatial memory and increased repetitive behavior.

Neuroligins (NLs) are a family of neural cell-adhesion molecules that are involved in excitatory/inhibitory synapse specification. Multiple members of the NL family (including NL1) and their binding partners have been linked to cases of human autism and mental retardation. We have now characterized NL1-deficient mice in autism- and mental retardation-relevant behavioral tasks. NL1 knock-out (KO) mice display deficits in spatial learning and memory that correlate with impaired hippocampal long-term potentiation. In addition, NL1 KO mice exhibit a dramatic increase in repetitive, stereotyped gro

Gasotransmitter-Nanodonor for Spatial Regulation of Anxiety-Like Behavior and Bone Metastasis.

Anxiety is highly prevalent among cancer patients, significantly impacting their prognosis. Current cancer therapies typically lack anxiolytic properties and may even exacerbate anxiety. Here, a gasotransmitter-nanodonors (GND) system is presented that exerts dual anxiolytic and anti-tumor effects via a "tumor-brain axis" strategy. The GND, synthesized by co-embedding Fe2⁺ and S2⁻ ions along with glucose oxidase (GOx) within bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles (FSG@AB), enables the controlled release of the gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in the acidic tumor microenvironment. H₂S a

Chronic dietary chlorpyrifos causes long-term spatial memory impairment and thigmotaxic behavior.

Little is known about the long-term effects of chronic exposure to low-level organophosphate (OP) pesticides, and the role of neurotransmitter systems, other than the cholinergic system, in mediating OP neurotoxicity. In this study, rats were administered 5mg/kg/day of chlorpyrifos (CPF) for 6 months commencing at 3-months-of-age. The animals were examined 7 months later (at 16-months-of-age) for spatial learning and memory in the Morris water maze (MWM) and locomotor activity. In addition, we assessed the chronic effects of CPF on glutamatergic and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAergic) function

The effects of psychomotor stimulants on single-spatial alternation behavior in dogs.

Dogs were trained to pedal press for drinking water in a noncued, single-spatial alternation task. After the dogs were exhibiting stable performance at or above predetermined criteria levels, they were given three doses of four different drugs (methylphenidate, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg/kg; d-amphetamine, 0.15, 0.3 and 0.6 mg/kg; cocaine, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/kg; and phenmetrazine, 0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 mg/kg). In general, all four drugs produced similar changes in performance. The number of correct responses was an especially sensitive indicator of drug effects. All four drugs also produced significant inc

Behavioral effects of chronic PFHxA exposure on spatial memory function.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants widely detected in human biological samples. As regulatory restrictions on long-chain PFAS such as PFOA and PFOS have increased, short-chain alternatives, including perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) have been widely adopted due to their lower bioaccumulation potential. However, their potential neurodevelopmental effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the long-term behavioral and neurobiological consequences of chronic PFHxA exposure beginning during the neurodevelopmental period and cont

A comparison of behavioral paradigms assessing spatial memory in tree shrews.

Impairments in spatial navigation in humans can be preclinical signs of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, cognitive tests that monitor deficits in spatial memory play a crucial role in evaluating animal models with early stage Alzheimer's disease. While Chinese tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) possess many features suitable for Alzheimer's disease modeling, behavioral tests for assessing spatial cognition in this species are lacking. Here, we established reward-based paradigms using the radial-arm maze and cheeseboard maze for tree shrews, and tested spatial memory in a group of 12 adult males in

Modeling Spatial Synchronization of Sleep for Detection of Idiopathic REM Sleep Behavior Disorder.

Idiopathic REM sleep behavioral disorder (iRBD) is a parasomnia and is considered a prodromal stage of Parkinson's Disease (PD). The golden standard of diagnosis is through visual analysis of a polysomnography (PSG) recording, which is resource-intensive. There is a need for better markers for severity evaluation and sub-typing. We developed a method to investigate and quantify the synchronization of brain activity as measured by electroencephalogram (EEG) during sleep. Using hypnodensities, an automatically derived sleep stage probability distribution, we evaluated sleep synchronization acros

Effects of anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning on spatial behavior of farm dwelling Norway rats.

Commensal rodent species cause damage to crops and stored products, they transmit pathogens to people, livestock and pets and threaten native flora and fauna. To minimize such adverse effects, commensal rodents are predominantly managed with anticoagulant rodenticides (AR) that can be transferred along the food chain. We tested the effect of the uptake of the AR brodifacoum (BR) by Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) on spatial behavior because this helps to assess the availability of dead rats and residual BR to predators and scavengers. BR was delivered by oral gavage or free-fed bait presented
