Specific learning disorders, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia, are frequently studied to inform our understanding of cognitive development, genetic mechanisms and brain function. In this Opinion Paper, we discuss limitations of this research approach, including the use of arbitrary criteria to select groups of children, heterogeneity within groups and overlap between domains of learning. By drawing on evidence from cognitive science, neuroscience and genetics, we propose an alternative, dimensional framework. We argue that we need to overcome the problems associated with a categorical approach

AIM: To describe the contribution made by consultations for learning disorders through their specific aims.
DEVELOPMENT: The prognosis of children with specific learning difficulties, suffering from dysphasia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, dysexecutive or dysattentional syndrome, partly depends on whether the methods and materials required for their re-educational and pedagogical adaptation are financed, made available and explained to the child's family in the cases that have been classed as the severest. This is the goal of the 37 reference centres that have been set up in France in the

Specific Learning Disability (SLD) describes persistent difficulties in academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, despite having normal intelligence. The exact origin of SLD is unknown. However, it is thought that biological factors and environmental conditions, along with genetic factors, contribute to the development of SLD. Agmatine, a neurotransmitter in the brain, plays a role in various biological processes. Agmatine has been reported to mediate antidepressant effects and neuroprotective effects, and it plays critical roles in learning and the processing of learned informatio

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study investigated fundamental motor skills in children with specific learning disorder (SLD) compared with their typically developing (TD) peers, focusing on individual skill mastery and performance patterns across diagnostic subtypes.
METHODS: A total of 90 children (45 SLD and 45 TD) aged 8-11 years participated. Fundamental motor skills were assessed using the process-oriented Test of Gross Motor Development-2 (TGMD-2).
RESULTS: Results demonstrated that children with SLD exhibited significantly lower motor skills proficiency than TD peers, with significantly

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Most children and adolescents with deafness receive one or two cochlear implants (CIs). Despite the CI expanding the potential for auditory rehabilitation in deaf children, the improvements in language and literacy skills of some of these children do not align with the expected outcomes. As the main research question, we wondered if the reading and writing deficits reported in some deaf children with CIs may be characterized as a domain-specific learning disorder, rather than only a consequence of deafness. Thus, we analyzed the academic discrepancies, in both reading and w

Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children that significantly affects academic performance and quality of life. At present, diagnosis mainly relies on standardized tests and professional evaluations, a process that is complex and time-consuming. Multiple studies have shown that machine learning can analyze diverse data, including test scores, handwriting samples, eye movement data, neuroimaging data, and genetic data, to automatically learn the relationships between input features and output labels and achieve efficient prediction. It shows great poten

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the auditory sensory-perceptual level of specific learning disorder (SLD) and explored relationships among neuropsychological assessments for SLD, auditory processing, and short and long latencies of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs).
METHODS: Fifteen children (7-14 years old) comprised the control group; 34 children comprised the SLD group. Audiologic assessments included tone audiometry, acoustic immittance measurements, acoustic reflex, central auditory processing, brainstem evoked response audiometry, and long latency potentials (P3 and N2). Child

The purpose of this review was to scope the quantity and methodological characteristics of the current literature examining parent and caregivers' perspectives of specific learning disorder (SLD) diagnosis, synthesise key findings and highlight gaps in the current literature. A systematic search was conducted for the period January 2013 to March 2023. Twenty-three articles, representing 1796 parents and caregivers across seven countries, underwent data extraction. The review highlighted considerable variability regarding the main aim and scope of each included study and that most studies used

Scoliosis is a spinal abnormality that has two types of curves (C-shaped or S-shaped). The vertebrae of the spine reach an equilibrium at different times, which makes it challenging to detect the type of curves. In addition, it may be challenging to detect curvatures due to observer bias and image quality. This paper aims to evaluate spinal deformity by automatically classifying the type of spine curvature. Automatic spinal curvature classification is performed using SVM and KNN algorithms, and pre-trained Xception and MobileNetV2 networks with SVM as the final activation function to avoid van

INTRODUCTION: Specific learning disorders are distinguished from general development disorders since, in general, only a certain number of processing mechanisms are involved whilst the remainder are unaffected.
DEVELOPMENT: The classification proposed by the DSM-IV takes a step towards clinical understanding and use of a common nomenclature. However, neuropsychological assessment is essential to understanding clinical subtypes. The neuro-cognitive approach, when taking into account the processing systems affected or involved, should include the strategies and principles of a cognitive-behavio

The goal of this article is to inform and educate those who work with children who present with language-learning disorders about phonologic processing deficits, because this area has been shown to have a significant impact on children and adults who exhibit reading disabilities. Mental health professionals who work with children with reading problems need to be aware of what is known about this source of reading disorders and the implications of this knowledge for prevention and treatment. Advocating for appropriate instruction for children with reading problems is an important role mental he

Children and adolescents who are not doing well in school are often referred to physicians for evaluation. Many of these children have average or above-average intelligence but are academically frustrated, low achievers. Parents state that although they are convinced that their child is bright, he or she does not seem to learn, and does not behave acceptably in school and at home. Results of the usual pediatric and neurologic examinations are frequently unrevealing. In evaluating children who are doing poorly in school, the clinician must determine whether the child has a developmental specifi

BACKGROUND: Although Anorexia Nervosa (AN) patients show dysfunctional behaviour in information processing, visual and verbal memory performance, and different cognitive fields, regardless of their BMI, the literature on the correlations between Eating Disorders (ED) and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD) does not provide conclusive data. Rather than a consequence of the mental disorder, cognitive dysfunctions may be a risk factor for AN.
METHODS: Our retrospective study investigates the prevalence of Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) among patients with ED. We considered 262 patients being tr

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare neurological condition that causes impaired blood flow to the brain, transient ischemic attacks or strokes, and accompanying cognitive impairments, especially in executive functioning. There is little data on the impact of this rare condition on academic outcomes in late childhood and adolescence. Here, we present the case of Ms. X, a 17-year-old white female diagnosed with MMD, who presented with evidence of a specific learning disorder (SLD) in mathematics. Ms. X was diagnosed with MMD at 6 years old and underwent revascularization surgery. Though she recover

Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is a multifactorial, neurodevelopmental disorder which may involve persistent difficulties in reading (dyslexia), written expression and/or mathematics. Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties with speed and accuracy of word reading, deficient decoding abilities, and poor spelling. Several studies from different, but complementary, scientific disciplines have investigated possible causal/risk factors for SLD. Biological, neurological, hereditary, cognitive, linguistic-phonological, developmental and environmental factors have been incriminated. Despite worldw

Children under 19 years of age constitute over 40% of India's population and information about their mental health needs is a national imperative. Children with specific learning disorders (SLDs) exhibit academic difficulties disproportionate to their intellectual capacities. Prevalence of SLD ranges from 2% to 10%. Dyslexia (developmental reading disorder) is the most common type, affecting 80% of all SLD. About 30% of learning disabled children have behavioral and emotional problems, which range from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (most common) to depression, anxiety, suicide etc.,

This article examines working memory functioning in children with specific developmental disorders of scholastic skills as defined by ICD-10. Ninety-seven second to fourth graders with a minimum IQ of 80 are compared using a 2 x 2 factorial (dyscalculia vs. no dyscalculia; dyslexia vs. no dyslexia) design. An extensive test battery assesses the three subcomponents of working memory described by Baddeley (1986): phonological loop, visual-spatial sketchpad, and central executive. Children with dyscalculia show deficits in visual-spatial memory; children with dyslexia show deficits in phonologica

The causes of many of the more subtle disorders of cerebral function are often obscure. Are they due to impaired development of the brain or to damage to the brain? Particularly if there is no definite evidence of the latter, and when talking to parents, it is better to use such terms as "minimal cerebral dysfunction". However this must not lesson in any way the constant search for the etiology of these disorders. There is no doubt about their frequency, and in one form or another, about one in ten children have special educational needs. There is therefore a major medical contribution to be m
