Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR2012eng
PURPOSE: This study investigated how different instructions for eliciting clear speech affected selected acoustic measures of speech.
METHOD: Twelve speakers were audio-recorded reading 18 different sentences from the Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech ( Yorkston & Beukelman, 1984). Sentences were produced in habitual, clear, hearing impaired, and overenunciate conditions. A variety of acoustic measures were obtained.
RESULTS: Relative to habitual, the clear, hearing impaired, and overenunciate conditions were associated with different magnitudes of acoustic change for measur

This paper gives a tutorial review of the linear prediction method in its application to acoustical analysis of sampled speech. The paper explains how the formant frequencies and the fundamental frequency can be estimated from sampled speech waves by the use of linear prediction. Advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed together with the problems in estimating the above parameters. Application examples are also given.

PURPOSE: To investigate the hypothesis that vowel production is more variable in adults with acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) relative to healthy individuals with unimpaired speech. Vowel formant frequency measures were selected as the specific target of focus.
METHOD: Seven adults with AOS and aphasia produced 15 repetitions of 6 American English vowels in /hVC/ context (hid, head, hat, hot, hub, hoot). Vowel formant frequency measures (F1, F2) were Bark transformed and compared with data from archival sources.
RESULTS: Measures of vowel acoustics in speakers with AOS did not differ from th

PURPOSE: This study sought to determine if alternative vowel space area (VSA) measures (i.e., novel trajectory-based measures: vowel space hull area and vowel space density) predicted speech intelligibility to the same extent as two traditional vowel measures (i.e., token-based measures: VSA and corner dispersion) in speakers with dysarthria. Additionally, this study examined if the strength of the relationship between acoustic vowel measures and intelligibility differed based on how intelligibility was measured (i.e., orthographic transcriptions [OTs] and visual analog scale [VAS] ratings).

Speech can be represented as a constellation of constricting vocal tract actions called gestures, whose temporal patterning with respect to one another is expressed in a gestural score. Current speech datasets do not come with gestural annotation and no formal gestural annotation procedure exists at present. This paper describes an iterative analysis-by-synthesis landmark-based time-warping architecture to perform gestural annotation of natural speech. For a given utterance, the Haskins Laboratories Task Dynamics and Application (TADA) model is employed to generate a corresponding prototype ge

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which vowel metrics are capable of distinguishing healthy from dysarthric speech and among different forms of dysarthria.
METHOD: A variety of vowel metrics were derived from spectral and temporal measurements of vowel tokens embedded in phrases produced by 45 speakers with dysarthria and 12 speakers with no history of neurological disease. Via means testing and discriminant function analysis (DFA), the acoustic metrics were used to (a) detect the presence of dysarthria and (b) classify the dysarthria subtype.

Students in acoustic phonetics and speech science classes often do not have much technical background; an intuitive means to teach acoustic phenomena to them would, thus, be useful. Regarding speech production, physical demonstrations using vocal-tract models have been shown to be an intuitive way to teach acoustic phenomena. In particular, a series of models for different purposes has been developed by Arai over the last 20+ years, including lung models, sound sources, and vocal-tract models, e.g., see Arai [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 131(3), 2444-2454 (2012)]. Different combinations of these models

Reverberation and background noise remain persistent obstacles to achieving clear and intelligible speech in enclosed environments. Conventional data-driven or purely empirical dereverberation systems often perform well only under training conditions but lack robustness and physical interpretability when exposed to new acoustic spaces. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a physics-informed speech enhancement algorithm that integrates analytical room acoustics modeling with a descriptor-guided optimization framework. The method employs virtual field simulations based on the Helmho

Phoneme production may be affected by limited speech motor control in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), with a general instability of acoustic targets across multiple repetitions of speech stimuli. This acoustic and Ultrasound Tongue Imaging (UTI) study shows that increased variability and reduction of contrast in vowel production is found in native Italian speakers with CAS, particularly as far as the height dimension is concerned. The data suggest that vowel production should play a major role in CAS diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, this study shows that a combined acoustic and articulato

Apraxia of speech (or verbal apraxia) is a controversial disorder, considered by some to be an impairment of the motor programming of speech. Because the disorder is characterized by "higher order" errors such as metathesis and segment addition as well as by errors of apparent dyscoordination of articulation, it seems to reflect a relatively high level of damage to the nervous system. This report presents acoustic descriptions of the speech of seven persons diagnosed as having apraxia of speech but without severe aphasic impairment, especially agrammatism. The acoustic results indicate a varie

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We investigated speech acoustics and self-reported vocal symptoms in mask-wearing healthcare professionals. We hypothesized that there would be an attenuation of spectral energies and increase in vocal effort during masked speech compared to unmasked speech.
STUDY DESIGN: Within and between subject quasi-experimental design.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 21 healthcare providers (13 cisgender female, 8 cisgender male; M = 32.9 years; SD = 7.9 years) and assessed acoustics and perceptual measures with and without a face mask in place. Measurements included: 1) acous

The Americans with Disabilities Act (enacted July 26, 1990) has brought into focus the need for removing barriers and improving accessibility of all buildings and facilities. It is clear that the definition of barrier must be expanded to include not only structural features that limit physical accessibility, but also acoustical barriers that limit access to communication and information. Acoustical interference caused by inappropriate levels of background noise and reverberation presents a barrier to learning and communication in educational settings and school-sponsored extracurricular activi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a commonly used surgical technique for oropharyngeal reconstruction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This procedure can be done either through the classic or the laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (LAUP) technique. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of classic UPPP and LAUP on acoustics of voice and speech nasalance, and to compare the effect of each operation on these two domains.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 27 patients with a mean age of 46 years. All patients were diagnosed wit

Selective uvulopalatopharyngoplasty has resulted in the improved management of sleep apnea; however, the effect of the surgery on speech has not been systematically evaluated. In this study, the speaking fundamental frequency, reading rate, and first and second formants of the vowels of four patients were measured acoustically presurgically and postsurgically. The results indicate that the length of time needed to read a passage was reduced in all four patients 2 weeks following surgery compared to the presurgical duration. In addition, the second formant of nine vowels studied was lower posts

On the continuum of hyper- and hypoarticulation, speech production is adjusted based on the environment and the listener to ensure intelligibility with minimal articulatory effort. The current study examines 13 German vowels produced by 16 professional female singers in read speech, recited speech, and singing. Stimuli consisted of ten original extracts from German classical art songs. The vowels' first two formants were analyzed, comparing across the three conditions. Furthermore, Euclidean distances were calculated for all vowels. Results generally indicate more hyperarticulation in recited

Acoustic cues such as pitch and spatial location allow listeners to attend to a target speaker and ignore competing talkers, aiding speech recognition in background noise. Diminished ability to utilize acoustic cues for speech stream segregation may thus contribute to older adults' challenges hearing in noise. Adults aged 18-74 completed a speech-in-speech identification task with three conditions containing 1) only pitch cues (fundamental frequency), 2) only spatial cues (interaural time differences; ITDs), or 3) both pitch and spatial cues for segregating a target talker from competing talke

Acoustic methods have progressed to the point that an acoustic typology of the motor speech disorders can be constructed from a parameteric assessment of the speech subsystems (e.g., phonation, nasal resonance, vowel articulation, consonant articulation, intonation, and rhythm). The results of this analysis can be interpreted in respect to global functions in speech (e.g., voice quality, intelligibility, and prosody). This paper reviews studies showing that specific acoustic analyses have demonstrated or potential value toward the overall goal of constructing acoustic profiles of dysarthria an

This investigation was designed to determine if a multivariate acoustic classifier could effectively discriminate group membership for 15 tracheoesophageal, esophageal, and laryngeal speakers. Seven intensity, 10 frequency, and 13 duration measures were quantified from recorded voice samples. Using principal components analysis, a subset of the 13 least redundant acoustic and temporal measures was systematically selected from the 30 original measures and analyzed singly and jointly in terms of its ability to discriminate among the three speaker groups. Discriminant function analysis revealed p
