Improving alaryngeal speech intelligibility.

Laryngectomized patients using esophageal speech or an electronic artificial larynx have difficulty producing correct voicing contrasts between homorganic consonants. Voicing of a voiceless consonant is the most frequent listener misidentification. A therapy technique is described that emphasizes "pushing harder" on voiceless consonants to improve the intelligibility of alaryngeal speakers. Laryngectomy speech therapy programs should focus first on the production of voiceless consonants before attempting to effect voicing.

Speech intelligibility in stapedectomized individuals.

We assessed the types of speech errors made in relation to the acoustic reflex. Ten subjects with unilateral stapedectomies were presented with consonant-vowel nonsense syllables in low pass noise at 70, 95, and 110 dB SPL in each ear. Hearing sensitivity for all subjects was normal or near-normal bilaterally. In the operated ear, speech intelligibility was significantly poorer than in the unoperated ear at all intensity levels. A distinctive feature analysis supported this finding. The data suggest that word discrimination testing in quiet does not adequately reveal the success of stapedectom

Nonlinear vocal phenomena and speech intelligibility.

At some point in our evolutionary history, humans lost vocal membranes and air sacs, representing an unexpected simplification of the vocal apparatus relative to other great apes. One hypothesis is that these simplifications represent anatomical adaptations for speech because a simpler larynx provides a suitably stable and tonal vocal source with fewer nonlinear vocal phenomena (NLP). The key assumption that NLP reduce speech intelligibility is indirectly supported by studies of dysphonia, but it has not been experimentally tested. Here, we manipulate NLP in vocal stimuli ranging from single v

[Speech intelligibility in noise at presbycusis].

Evaluation of speech recognition is possible by presenting testing material in sentence form with presence of competitive noise. We developed new test of sentence intelligibility in noise in the Czech language. This article demonstrates results of the influence of the babble noise on sentence intelligibility in hearing impaired listeners with presbycusis. The time characteristics of babble noise are similar to human voice. That is the reason why this noise masking is more enhanced at the central hearing level than any other noise masking. A group of 423 persons was divided into younger group (

Speech perception and speech intelligibility in children after cochlear implantation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term speech perception and speech intelligibility of congenitally and prelingually deaf children after cochlear implantation. It was a longitudinal study following 63 congenitally or prelingually deaf children up to 5 years after implantation. They each received a nucleus multichannel cochlear implant before they were 10 years old. METHODS: Perception is evaluated using the Test for the Evaluation of Voice Perception and Production (TEPP) and concerns closed- and open-set word and sentence perception without lip-reading. The intelligibility is

Intelligibility of dysphonic speech in auralized classrooms.

Voice disorders can reduce the speech intelligibility of affected speakers. This study evaluated the effect of noise, voice disorders, and room acoustics on vowel intelligibility, listening easiness, and the listener's reaction time. Three adult females with dysphonia and three adult females with normal voice quality recorded a series of nine vowels of American English in /h/-V-/d/ format (e.g., "had"). The recordings were convolved with two oral-binaural impulse responses acquired from measurements in two classrooms with 0.4 and 3.1 s of reverberation time, respectively. The stimuli were pres

Intelligibility of clear speech: effect of instruction.

PURPOSE: The authors investigated how clear speech instructions influence sentence intelligibility. METHOD: Twelve speakers produced sentences in habitual, clear, hearing impaired, and overenunciate conditions. Stimuli were amplitude normalized and mixed with multitalker babble for orthographic transcription by 40 listeners. The main analysis investigated percentage-correct intelligibility scores as a function of the 4 conditions and speaker sex. Additional analyses included listener response variability, individual speaker trends, and an alternate intelligibility measure: proportion of conte

Speech intelligibility in severe adductor spasmodic dysphonia.

This study compared speech intelligibility in nondisabled speakers and speakers with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) before and after botulinum toxin (Botox) injection. Standard speech samples were obtained from 10 speakers diagnosed with severe ADSD prior to and 1 month following Botox injection, as well as from 10 age- and gender-matched healthy adults. This yielded 3 speaking conditions: pre-Botox injection, post-Botox injection, and normal control. Thirty phrases were extracted from the speech samples and arranged in a counterbalanced listening experiment. Thirty students, reporting li

Speech intelligibility in noise with ear protectors.

Speech perception was tested in high level noise under controlled laboratory conditions in noise-exposed workmen and normal subjects, with and without a hearing protector. The group was further divided by age and English fluency, the latter group being included because of the high proportion of non-fluent English speakers in the Canadian workforce. In normal-hearing subjects the highest discrimination scores were found without background noise, they were lower with white noise as a masker, and even lower with crowd noise as a masker; wearing of a protector had no effect on intelligibility. The cognitive architecture of degraded speech intelligibility.

Accurate speech understanding is crucial in everyday life. Yet, speech is often degraded by a variety of talker and environmental factors, which listeners must overcome. In this online experiment, we assess how degraded speech intelligibility is supported by "elemental" cognitive processes. Eighty-nine healthy adults listened to spoken sentences degraded in five ways and reported the words that they heard. In addition, they completed the Reading Span and N-back tasks to assess working memory capacity (WM), as well as a short version of Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices to assess fluid reas

Alaryngeal speech intelligibility and the older listener.

Past investigations of alaryngeal speech intelligibility have focused on comparative intelligibility as perceived by young normally hearing adults. However, the spouses and social companions of laryngectomees may have significantly different auditory capabilities compared to young listeners. This report presents a comparison of alaryngeal and laryngeal speech identification performance for a group of young normally hearing listeners and a group of older adult listeners representative of the age of the laryngectomee's social companions. The speech signals investigated included normal laryngeal

Investigating Speech Intelligibility Capabilities of Electrical Auditory Stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: In military settings, ear-worn communication systems and hearing protection have equal importance, but opposite purposes. It is crucial to provide clear communication signal free of noise that may also be hazardous to hearing. Electrical auditory stimulation is a mode of transmitting high fidelity speech information with an amplitude modulated electromagnetic signal that is sent transcutaneously through electrodes. No traditional ear-worn transducer is needed, offering various locations for receiving auditory information on the head and body. The purpose of the current study is t

Speech Intelligibility in Speakers With Adductor Laryngeal Dystonia.

PURPOSE: Adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) is a neurological voice disorder characterized by spasms in the adductory muscles of the larynx, resulting in a dysphonic voice with intermittent voice breaks. This study compared the intelligibility of individuals with AdLD to those without in noisy environments and characterized the relationship between their overall severity of dysphonia and intelligibility. METHOD: Speakers (44 with AdLD and 44 age- and sex-matched controls) each read a unique set of stimuli from the Sentence Intelligibility Test. Overall severity of dysphonia was assessed by fi

Intelligibility of pseudo-whispered speech after total laryngectomy.

This study aimed to assess the intelligibility of so-called 'pseudo-whispered speech' (pseudo-WS), as produced without voice nor pulmonic airstream by some alaryngeal patients prior to rehabilitation. Several perception tests were submitted to three experienced clinicians and three naive listeners, relying on the speech samples of 20 French native speakers: 10 alaryngeal speakers, solely using pseudo-WS when starting speech therapy up to six months after total laryngectomy, and 10 control speakers, recorded in the closest speech mode available, whispered speech (WS). Experts were asked to iden
