Sphingomonas paucimobilis is a Gram-negative bacteria identified as a rare infectious agent, more commonly seen among immune-compromised hosts. Infections include bacteremia, septicemia leading to septic shock, bone and soft-tissue infections such as septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, infection of shunts, and implantable devices. Although the organism has been reported to have low pathogenicity, infections in the immune compromised can be devastating leading to even death.

A rare case of Sphingomonas paucimobilis endophthalmitis secondary to a penetrating globe injury with a retained intraocular foreign body is presented. A 30-year-old man presented with severe pain following a penetrating left eye injury. Visual acuity (VA) was 6/120. Slit-lamp examination revealed perforation of the temporal cornea and iris, hypopyon, and a fibrinous membrane covering the pupil. Ultrasonography showed dense vitreous infiltration and an orbital CT-scan confirmed the presence of a metallic foreign body in the vitreous cavity. Topical and systemic therapy were initiated. INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial ventriculitis is a severe infection that habitually plagues neurological intensive care units. It is usually associated with external ventricular drains. Unfortunately, classic cerebral spinal fluid parameters are less specific and sensitive compared to community acquired meningitis. This is in part secondary to indolent bacteria commonly infecting external ventricular drains leading to ventriculitis.
CASE REPORT: Herein, a rare case of Sphingomonas paucimobilis ventriculitis in an immunocompetent host is reported. The patient had classic symptoms of ventriculitis, bu

More than 80% of diphenyl phthalate (DPP) at 100 mg l(-1) was degraded by Sphingomonas chungbukensis KCTC 2955 in a mineral salts medium at pH 7.0 and 30 degrees C within 48 h. The maximum specific degradation rate was 5 mg DPP l(-1 )h(-1). It was rapidly converted to monophenyl phthalate and phthalic acid which were further degraded.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis (S. paucimobilis), is a gram-negative, aerobic, non-fermentative, oxidase (+) and catalase (+) bacterium. Although S. paucimobilis is isolated very rarely, it can cause both nosocomial and community-acquired infections. A patient admitted to our clinic had a complaint of swelling in the right mandibular region and pain increasing while eating for the previous week. Bimanual palpation revealed a painful swelling of 1x1x1 cm in size inside the right Wharton's duct. Via massage over the right submandibular gland, a purulent drainage came up from the opening of the Wharto

Sphingomonas paucimobilis usually exhibits low virulence likely secondary to its lack of lipopolysaccharide A. Infections caused by S. paucimobilis more commonly afflict immunocompromised patients. Some case reports document pneumonia, osteomyelitis, pyomyoma, and septic arthritis secondary to S. paucimobilis in immunocompetent patients. S. paucimobilis bacteremia is associated with underlying conditions, including malignancy, diabetes mellitus, end-stage renal disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Bacteremia has the potential to lead to septic shock. Antimicrobial effectiveness

Batch experiments were conducted to characterize the degradation of benzo[a]pyrene, a representative high molecular weight (HMW) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), by Sphingomonas yanoikuyae JAR02. Concentrations up to the solubility limit (1.2 microg l(-1)) of benzo[a]pyrene were completely removed from solution within 20 h when the bacterium was grown on salicylate. Additional experiments with [(14)C]7-benzo[a]pyrene demonstrated 3.8% mineralization over 7 days when salicylate was present is solution, and one major radio-labeled metabolite was observed that accounted for approximately 10

Strain CCP-7T, isolated from a freshwater pond in Taiwan, was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomy approach. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and coding sequences of 92 protein clusters indicated that strain CCP-7T formed a phylogenetic lineage in the genus Sphingomonas. Strain CCP-7T was most closely related to Sphingomonas starnbergensis 382T and Sphingomonas naphthae DKC-5-1T with 96.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Strain CCP-7T showed 65.5-76.7 % average nucleotide identity and 20.2-22.5 % digital DNA-DNA hybridization identity with the strains of other re

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is a strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming Gram-negative bacillus, ubiquitous bacterium, thought to be an opportunistic pathogen and is rarely reported in clinical settings. Here in, is the first case report of Acute Sphingomonas phlebitis secondary to intravenous (IV) drug use. We present the case of a 39-year-old male who initially presented with pain in his right upper extremity, fevers and chills of three week duration. He admitted to regularly injecting heroin in his distal right upper extremity with visible erythema, tenderness and streaking along the path of vein

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is a rare cause of bacteremia. It can affect both healthy and immunocompromised individuals. Community acquired infections of this organism are more common than nosocomial ones. We report two cases of community acquired S. paucimobilis bacteremia-one in a healthy patient and other in a diabetic patient. Both presented with multiple episodes of loose stools, pain abdomen, vomiting, decreased oral intake and myalgia. They responded well to Cefipime 1g and Sulbactam 500mg combination antibiotic and were discharged satisfactorily. In the absence of standardized guidelines

Empyema secondary to foreign body aspiration is rare in adults. We present a case of empyema in a 77-year-old male patient related to a remote aspiration event during a dental procedure. A CT of the chest and bronchoscopy confirmed that a metallic foreign body was located within the right lower lobe bronchus. His pleural fluid culture revealed Sphingomonas paucimobilis which is a low-virulent opportunistic gram-negative bacilli and rarely causes infection. The patient received meropenem followed by levofloxacin and recovered uneventfully. The attempt of foreign body removal was failed due to c

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic gram-negative bacillus. The bacteria can cause infections, which can be devastating and, therefore, the patients need adequate and early antibiotic cover. We are presenting an interesting case of meningitis secondary to an unusual S. paucimobilis infection. This is the second case to our knowledge in the literature on meningitis due to S. paucimobilis. The 31-year-old previously healthy man presented with 2 months' history of weight loss and loss of appetite. He had fever and headache for 3 weeks. He was also speaking irrelevantly for 3 weeks. He had cha

Sphingomonas paucimobilis , a yellow-pigmented, aerobic, glucose nonfermenting, Gram-negative bacilli is a rare cause of human infection. It was first discovered as an infective agent in humans in 1977 and named Pseudomonas paucimobilis. It was renamed as S. paucimobilis in 1990 in accordance with phylogenetic data. S. paucimobilis is an aerobic bacterium found in soil and water; it is a rare cause of healthcare associated infections. S. paucimobilis can cause infections in healthy as well as immunocompromised individuals. At first, its colony looks like Gram-positive bacilli colony, so by mis

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) carditis is treated with steroids, which can cause changes in the cellular immune response, especially decreased CD3 (+) T cells. Nosocomial infections due to steroid use for treatment of ARF carditis or secondary to the changes in the cellular immune response have not been reported in the literature. Sphingomonas paucimobilis is a Gram-negative bacillus causing community- and hospital-acquired infections. It has been reported as causing bacteraemia/sepsis, pneumonia or peritonitis in patients with malignancies, immunosuppression or diabetes. We present a case with

Solar radiation impacts most life forms on Earth as an energy source or a regulatory signal. Still, relatively little is known about phototrophic potential and strategies of environmental bacteria beyond cyanobacteria. This study explores the phototrophy related genomic diversity of Sphingomonas faeni strains from boreal, sub-arctic and arctic regions. We analyzed the genomes of 25 plant-associated S. faeni strains isolated from Vaccinium myrtillus, Oxyria digyna, V. vitis-idaea, and Bistorta vivipara, along with a reference S. faeni genome MA-Olki. The strains showed diversity both in overall

Sphingomonas paucimobilis (S. paucimobilis) is a gram negative bacillus. It has existed in soil, drinking water and plants. It has been isolated from distilled water tanks, respirators, and hemodialysis devices at the hospital setting. Patients with chronic disorders or immune suppression may be susceptible to infections with it. This microorganism has also been reported to infect healthy persons. Both nosocomial and community-acquired infections have been reported. So far, a variety of infections have been reported, including sepsis, septic pulmonary embolism, septic arthritis, peritonitis, a

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic Gram-negative bacillus that, although rare in humans, most commonly infects immunocompromised and hospitalized patients. Among the 59 pediatric cases of S. paucimobilis infection reported in the literature, the most common diagnosis involves isolated bacteremia. These cases are related to sporadic or epidemic infections. Death related to this infection occurred in only one case. The authors report a case of an 11-year-old boy with the diagnosis of Sphingomonas paucimobilis otomastoiditis and a thorough review of the literature on this infection in pediat
