Annals of allergy, asthma & immunology : official publication of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology2011eng
OBJECTIVES: To provide a review on spice allergy and its implementation in clinical practice.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed searches were performed using spice allergy as the keyword for original and review articles. Selected references were also procured from the reviewed articles' references list.
STUDY SELECTION: Articles were selected based on their relevance to the topic.
RESULTS: Spices are available in a large variety and are widely used, often as blends. Spice allergy seems to be rare, reportedly affecting between 4 and 13 of 10,000 adults and occurring more often in women because of cosmeti

Spices in the desiccated state provide an environment that allows the survival of many foodborne pathogens. Currently, the incidence of pathogen-positive spices imported into the United States is 1.9 times higher than for any other imported food. Correspondingly, imported spices have been associated with numerous foodborne outbreaks and multiple product recalls. Despite the association with recalls and outbreaks, the actual pathogen populations in spices, when found, are frequently extremely small. In addition to pathogenic bacterial species, toxigenic molds have been frequently recovered from

9 common spices were tested epicutaneously in 338 dermatological patients, 118 of whom were allergic to balsam of Peru. Positive reactions to one or more spices were seen in 50 patients all of whom except 2 were allergic to balsam of Peru. The spices giving positive reactions most often were clove, Jamaica pepper and cinnamon (cassia). 2/3 of the patients allergic to balsam of Peru or spices were women, usually suffering from hand eczema. Peroral challenge with spices was carried out in 71 patients allergic to balsam of Peru. Pompholyx on the palms and other objective symptoms were encountered

Brodifacoum (BDF), otherwise known as superwarfarin, is a long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide (LAAR) which acts as a vitamin K antagonist. Much like warfarin, BDF's mechanism of action is to irreversibly inhibit the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase, thus reducing the recycling of vitamin K and, therefore, reducing the activation of clotting factors two, seven, nine, and 10. Although BDF is usually found in rodenticides, it has been recently used as an additive in synthetic cannabinoids. We present a case of a young male with a history of synthetic cannabinoid use who presented with hematur

Spices are widely used for flavouring food and are mostly grown in the tropics. Twenty-eight workers in a store processing cloves, pepper, nutmeg, mace and cardamom for export were studied. They were exposed to the dust of these products for short periods, in rotation. Seventy-six per cent of the workers experienced symptoms such as smarting of the nostrils and eyes, cough, sneezing and running nose while handling cloves. Similar symptoms occurred less frequently with pepper (44%). These symptoms were all temporary and lasted only during exposure. Nutmeg, mace and cardamom did not induce any u

BACKGROUND: Skin prick tests of native spices (commercial powdered spices) are common in patients with allergy to birch or mugwort pollen. Clinical symptoms from spices are infrequent but occasionally severe.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the skin prick test results with native spices and spice extracts and to determine the clinical relevance of test material.
METHODS: Skin prick tests with the native spices coriander, caraway, paprika, cayenne, mustard, and white pepper were made twice at 2-month to 2.9-year intervals in 49 patients. During the latter time, tests were also made with spice extracts

The aim of this study was to determine dietary salicylate content in selected culinary herbs and spices, using the RP-HPLC method with fluorescence detection. The highest concentrations of salicylates were found in dried basil and cumin, followed by dried oregano and cloves. Our research contributes to the global database of salicylate content in food products.

In spite of poor evidence, many patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux are advised to avoid fat and spices. We therefore measured gastro-oesophageal reflux after fatty and spicy meals. During three 24-h pH monitoring sessions, eight volunteers ate two identical, low fat and mild beef stews, or a hot and fatty Indian curry for lunch. Meals for dinner were the beef stew, the hot Indian curry or a mild curry. Day-time acid exposure was significantly longer after the hot curry (7.5 % [1.4 - 27.1]) than after the beef stews (2.3 % [0.4 - 9.8] and 2.5 % [0.7 - 15.7]). Night-time acid exposure was a

Cutaneous reactions to foods and spices occur in both the workplace and at home in those who grow, handle, prepare, or cook food. As spices are also used in cosmetics and perfumes other exposures are found. Several patterns have been described upon contact with food including irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, phototoxic contact dermatitis, and protein contact dermatitis. The purpose of this article is to review the approach to a patient suspected of having a cutaneous reaction to food or spices, as well as discuss these reactions and the allergens tha

We describe a 27-year-old subject who developed rhinitis and asthma symptoms 1 year after starting to prepare a certain kind of sausage. He was previously diagnosed as having allergy to coconut, banana, and kiwi and allergic rhinitis to horse, cat, dog, and cow. A positive immediate skin prick test (SPT) for paprika (dry powder of Capsicum annuum [Solanaceae]), coriander (Coriandrum sativum [umbelliferous]), and mace (shell of nutmeg, Myristica fragrans [Myristicaceae]) at a concentration of 10% (w/v) was obtained. SPT with other sausage ingredients, mites, pollens, and molds were negative. By

About 1000 patients were investigated at our clinic during 1991-1995 for occupational skin disease, and 5 had occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices. The patients were chefs, or kitchen, coffee room, and restaurant workers. All patients had hand (or finger) dermatitis. The causative spices were: garlic, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and clove. The same patients also had allergic patch test reactions to foods: tomato, lettuce and carrot. Paprika elicited a weak allergic patch test reaction in 2 patients. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices is relatively rare, but nee

Scratch tests with common spices were performed in 1,120 atopic and 380 non-atopic patients. Positive skin test reactions were seen almost exclusively in atopics. Curry and paprika produced reactions most frequently, and when the components of curry were tested separately, coriander, caraway, cayenne and mustard were responsible for the vast majority of the skin reactions. A high correlation between positive skin test reactions to spices, especially to curry and its components, and tree pollens, fruits and vegetables was demonstrated, suggesting that there may be a group of cross allergies. Neurodegenerative disorders (NDD), one of the major health care challenges, are exponentially increasing as the elderly segment of the population continues growing in size worldwide. Currently, the role of nutraceuticals, in general and particularly for brain health, has generated immense research interest. Ancient, traditionally used culinary spices have been recognized for their potential health benefits. Abundant evidence clearly suggests that spices do impart considerable biological activity in the central nervous system (CNS). Owing to the multi-mechanistic actions of spices/bioactives, s

Spice allergies are often under-recognized and under-researched, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Cross-reactivity with other plant allergens further complicates accurate diagnosis. This literature review seeks to systematize and analyze current data on hypersensitivity to spices, including pepper, cumin, oregano, anise, mustard, and other seasonings. The review covers research published from 2010 to 2023 in peer-reviewed journals, books, and conference proceedings, sourced from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The main pepper allergens are PR-

Introduction Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a complex but infrequently used technology that plays a crucial role for patients experiencing cardiopulmonary failure. Formal ECMO education remains inconsistent, with considerable variability in structure and availability. We aimed to implement a shared, practical, and interactive curriculum on ECMO or "SPICE" across multiple institutions. Methods Educators collaborated across four different institutions developing an ECMO curriculum that consisted of 15 educational sessions including 10 simulated ECMO emergencies. Three institutions

Spices are not only just herbs used in culinary for improving the taste of dishes, they are also sources of a numerous bioactive compounds significantly beneficial for health. They have been used since ancient times because of their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and carminative properties. Several scientific studies have suggested their protective role against chronic diseases. In fact, their active compounds may help in arthritis, neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer's, Parkinson, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc.), diabetes, sore muscles, gastrointestinal problem

Scientific evidence suggests that many herbs and spices have medicinal properties that alleviate symptoms or prevent disease. In this study, we examined the chemopreventive effects of the Apiaceae spices, anise, caraway, and celery seeds against 17β-estrogen (E2)-mediated mammary tumorigenesis in an ACI (August-Copenhagen Irish) rat model. Female ACI rats were given either control diet (AIN 93M) or diet supplemented with 7.5% (w/w) of anise, caraway, or celery seed powder. Two weeks later, one half of the animals in each group received subcutaneous silastic implants of E2. Diet intake and body

Contact and systemic contact-type dermatitis reactions to spices such as nutmeg, mace, cardamom, curry, cinnamon, and laurel may be rare but may well be overlooked. In our experience, patch testing with these spices "as is" is very useful; if there is a positive reaction, testing with dilutions is helpful. Scratch-chamber testing often leads to false-positive irritant reactions. As Hjorth and Niinimäki have pointed out, a positive test to balsam of Peru may indicate a spice allergy, but the absence of such a reaction does not rule it out. In all the cases in our experience, the careful draftin
