Thirteen patients presented primary extradural neoplasms compressing the spinal cord and/or roots in a four year period. Laminectomy and tumour excision or biopsy were carried out in twelve patients and transthoracic resection in the one remaining. Six tumours were benign; two were neurofibromata associated with von Recklinghausen's disease; two were osteochondromata; and there were single cases of cavernous haemangioma and aneurysmal bone cyst. We describe a 48-y-old male with chronic progressive myelopathy suggesting thoracic intramedullary neoplasm but in whom laboratory workup disclosed Schistosoma mansoni myelopathy. We present the clinical, myelographic, MRI, and histologic data on a 7-year-old girl with confirmed Schistosoma mansoni infection of the spinal cord. MRI of the granulomatous spinal lesion revealed extensive enlargement of the cord in the T11-12 area, with some intramedullary swelling extending to T-5 through T-7. The clinical manifestations of spinal schistosomiasis can be diverse, and there should be a high index of suspicion for all patients from endemic areas.

Intramedullary spinal cord neoplasms are rare, accounting for about 4%10% of all central nervous system tumors. An experimental model of spinal cord compression by epidural neoplasms was produced in rabbits by injecting a VX2 tumor-cell suspension anterior to the T-13 vertebral body. A new instrument for use in surgically treating intra-axial neoplasms of the spinal cord and brain stem is described. The plated bayonet allows neoplastic tissue in the spinal cord to be separated from functioning neural elements without perforating the adjacent spinal cord. In addition, the plated bayonet facilitates exposure through the very small incision necessary to remove tumors of the brain stem without damaging cranial nerves or other vital structures.

Four cases of a rare melanotic variant of malignant nerve sheath tumour (MNST) in dogs are described. All four cases presented with neurological clinical signs due to multicentric, intradural, intra- and extraparenchymal neoplasms that surrounded the spinal and cranial nerves and infiltrated the adjacent spinal cord and brain. The dogs were young (3 months to 3 years of age), all were female and four different breeds were represented. Characteristic histological features were interweaving fascicles of spindle-shaped cells, sometimes with an architecture reminiscent of Antoni A and B patterns.
