Involvement of spinal nerves in neurofibromatosis.

Spinal tumors are a frequent form of manifestation of neurofibromatosis. Out of 171 patients, who have been operated on over a ten years period on spinal tumors, 7 patients had neurofibromatosis (4.1%). A total of 9 operations were performed, removing 20 spinal tumors. Three patients had multiple neurofibromas. Half of the neurofibromas had a dumbbell configuration with a larger extraspinal extension. In three patients a family history of neurofibromatosis and typical dermatological signs were evident. Two cases will be selected and the basic concept regarding treatment and the risks involved

Patterning spinal nerves and vertebral bones.

A prominent anatomical feature of the peripheral nervous system is the segmentation of mixed (motor, sensory and autonomic) spinal nerves alongside the spinal cord. During early development their axon growth cones avoid the developing vertebral elements by traversing the anterior/cranial half of each somite-derived sclerotome, so ensuring the separation of spinal nerves from vertebral bones as axons extend towards their peripheral targets. A glycoprotein expressed on the surface of posterior half-sclerotome cells confines growth cones to the anterior half-sclerotomes by contact repulsion. A cl

Characterization of hemangioblastomas of spinal nerves.

OBJECTIVE: Hemangioblastoma is classified as a benign tumor of the central nervous system. Peripheral nervous system hemangioblastomas to date have been described only in a few case reports. Experience in treating patients with these rare lesions, which harbor diagnostic and therapeutic pitfalls, is limited. METHODS: To characterize these lesions better, we reviewed our hemangioblastoma database for patients who underwent surgery for extradural hemangioblastoma of the spinal nerve. RESULTS: Between 1983 and 2003, six patients underwent surgery for spinal nerve hemangioblastomas at our instit

Acupuncture points of the typical spinal nerves.

Typical spinal nerves have six cutaneous branches which reach to the skin of the body wall in the thorax and abdomen. Each of these six cutaneous branches correlates to an acupuncture point. This communication describes acupuncture points found in the thoracic and abdominal walls using anatomic nomenclature relating to cutaneous branches of the spinal nerves.

The glossopharyngeal, vagus and spinal accessory nerves.

The glossopharyngeal, vagus and spinal accessory nerves are closely related anatomically, and to a certain extent, functionally. We present an overview of their anatomy, highlighting the important clinical and imaging implications. The main pathologic lesions arising from these nerves are also discussed and the imaging features reviewed.

Rerouting peripheral nerves for spinal cord lesions.

To provide control of paralyzed limb muscles following spinal cord lesions, peripheral nerves containing motor axons from motoneurons located above a spinal cord lesion could potentially be rerouted to nerves containing motor axons located below the spinal cord lesion. To test this hypothesis in rats, the distal end of a cut tibial nerve, innervated by the L4-6 spinal level, was anastomosed or rerouted to the central end of the cut femoral nerve, innervated by the L3-4 spinal level. Appropriate controls were used. Recovery of lower hind limb motor function was followed at regular intervals, me

Traumatic neuropathy of second cervical spinal nerves.

The second cervical spinal nerves are unduly vulnerable to forcible approximation of the arches of the atlas and axis and to excessive rotation of the atlas on the axis. Sequelae of such injury include sensory aberrations ranging from loss of feeling to severe neuralgia and disorders of balance. Diagnosis of second cervical neuropathy may be difficult when there are multiple injuries to the cervical spine, but most cases clear up spontaneously within one to three years.

Anatomic Study of Superior Cluneal Nerves: Revisiting the Contribution of Lumbar Spinal Nerves.

OBJECTIVE: Superior cluneal nerve (SCN) entrapment neuropathy can result in low back pain and thus be confused with other pathologies (e.g., lumbar disk disease). Therefore we performed cadaveric dissection of the SCN to better understand its anatomy and segmental origin. METHODS: Twenty sides from 10 Caucasian fresh frozen cadavers (6 females and 4 males) were used in this study. The diameter of the SCN, distance between the exit point of the SCN from the thoracolumbar fascia and midline, and distance between the exit point of the SCN from the thoracolumbar fascia and the posterior superior

Bilateral meningiomatous lesions of the spinal accessory nerves.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas arising from cranial nerves with no dural attachment are exceedingly rare. The authors present a patient with bilateral meningiomatous lesions originating symmetrically from both spinal accessory nerves. CASE REPORT: A 61-year old woman presented with a one-year history of spinal ataxia and minimal left-sided motor impairment. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated two extrinsic lesions dorsolaterally of the medulla. Surgical exposure via a midline suboccipital approach with C1 laminectomy revealed the lesions arising from the spinal accessory nerves and in direct con

Intradural anastomoses between the cervical spinal nerves: Anatomical study.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral nerves can present anastomoses at different levels, with intraspinal anastomoses being relatively common, but little studied. OBJECTIVE: To study the presence and number of intradural anastomoses of the cervical spinal nerves in the Latin population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 14 adult corpses of both sexes were dissected, fixed in formaldehyde solution. Sex of the corpse, existence of anastomosis, side, height of the anastomoses and sensory/motor origin were recorded. RESULTS: of the 14 corpses, 8 were male and 6 were female. Eleven cases presented anastomoses (79%), 8

Perineural tumor spread - Interconnection between spinal and cranial nerves.

The secondary neoplastic involvement of the cervical plexus in patients with head and neck malignancies is extremely rare. MR examination of the neck revealed the diffuse neoplastic infiltration of the right C2 root, in a 57-year-old patient with several months long pain in the right ear region and a history of the tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Associated perineural tumor spread and consequent distal involvement of great auricular nerve and vagus nerve were evident. Best of our knowledge, this is the first reported involvement of the cervical plexus in patients with head and neck cancers, as

Widespread neural excitation initiated from cardiac spinal afferent nerves.

Reflex effects of cardiac sympathetic afferent nerve excitation on cardiac and renal components of sympathetic outflow have been well investigated, but the extent of these cardiac afferent influences on other sympathetic nerves or on respiratory or cortical neural systems is unknown. Therefore such influences were investigated electrophysiologically in anesthetized, vagotomized, baroreceptor-denervated cats. Stimulation of cardiac sympathetic spinal afferent neurons by the noxious substance bradykinin caused excitation of cardiac, renal, splenic, gastrohepatic, adrenal, and deep peroneal (musc

A case of multiple schwannomas of the trigeminal nerves, acoustic nerves, lower cranial nerves, brachial plexuses and spinal canal: schwannomatosis or neurofibromatosis?

In most cases, while schwannoma is sporadically manifested as a single benign neoplasm, the presence of multiple schwannomas in one patient is usually indicative of neurofibromatosis 2. However, several recent reports have suggested that schwannomatosis itself may also be a distinct clinical entity. This study examines an extremely rare case of probable schwannomatosis associated with intracranial, intraspinal and peripheral involvements. A 63-year-old woman presented with a seven-year history of palpable lumps on both sides of the supraclavicular area and hearing impairment in both ears. On p

Electrophysiology of Cranial Nerve Testing: Spinal Accessory and Hypoglossal Nerves.

Multiple techniques have been developed for the electrodiagnostic evaluation of cranial nerves XI and XII. Each of these carries both benefits and limitations, with more techniques and data being available in the literature for spinal accessory than hypoglossal nerve evaluation. Spinal accessory and hypoglossal neuropathy are relatively uncommon cranial mononeuropathies that may be evaluated in the outpatient electrodiagnostic laboratory setting. A review of available literature using PubMed was conducted regarding electrodiagnostic technique in the evaluation of spinal accessory and hypogloss

Innervation of sonic muscles in teleosts: occipital vs. spinal nerves.

The innervation of sonic muscles in teleosts has been categorized into three types: occipital nerve, spinal nerve, and a combination of occipital and spinal nerves. The innervation patterns of sonic muscles were examined (or re-examined) in seven sonic fish species (rockfish, pinecone fish, sweeper, tigerfish, piranha, dory, and pollack) that use the sonic muscles to vibrate the swimbladder. The peripheral nerves (occipital or spinal) were identified based on skeletal preparations. The sonic muscle innervation was of the occipital type in four species (rockfish, pinecone fish, sweeper, and tig
