Palaeopathology of spinal osteophytosis, vertebral ankylosis, ankylosing spondylitis, and vertebral hyperostosis.

Five hundred and sixty intact skeletons and several thousand disarticulated vertebrae have been examined with special reference to spinal fusion. In period they ranged from a 21st dynasty Egyptian mummy to a mid-19th century skeleton. Osteophytes were found in about half of the specimens, as reported previously. Fifteen skeletons with extensive blocks of spinal fusion were also identified. Sacroiliitis was present in two, but the asymmetrical spinal disease and peripheral joint changes suggested Reiter's disease or psoriatic spondylitis rather than ankylosing spondylitis. The remaining 13 had

[Correlation between osteoporosis and discarthrosis. Comparative frequency of spinal osteophytosis and thickness of intervertebral disk in 50 patients with osteoporosis confirmed by bone biopsy and in 50 controls. Study of lordosis in 50 osteoporotic patients].

Comparative radiological study of the spine in 50 osteoporotic subjects selected on double criteria, radiological and histological, and 50 control subjects of the same age and same sex, confirmed the lesser frequency and the mildness of the osteophyte formation, and the disk degeneration in osteoporotic subjects. The vertebral radiological index, which measures both the number and importance of the vertebral body surface concavity and vertebral collapse, and has no significant correlation with age. A study of the degree of lordosis and of the index of bending of the trunk was carried out in 50

Vertebral osteophytosis and vertebral deformities in an elderly population sample.

AIM OF THE STUDY: We investigated the association between vertebral osteophytosis and vertebral deformities in an elderly population sample, and the influence of some risk factors on spinal osteophytosis and deformities. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A population sample of 280 women and 263 men, all Zagreb residents older than 45 years, participated in the study. Radiographs of the thoracic and lumbar spine were evaluated for the presence of osteophyte formation and vertebral deformities. Osteophyte size was graded on a scale from 0 to 4. Vertebral deformities were determined by the semiquantitative

Vertebral osteophyte of pre-modern Korean skeletons from Joseon tombs.

Spinal osteophytic changes are known to be affected by differences in age, sex, population, and mechanical stress. We examined Joseon skeletons (n=87) to obtain vertebral osteophytosis data on a pre-modern Korean population. The mean osteophytic value (MOV) of vertebrae increased in the cervical-thoracic-lumbar order. More severe osteophytosis was found in the vertebrae (C5, T9, T10, and L4) farthest from the line of gravity, while the general pattern of vertebral osteophytosis appeared similar to those of previous reports on other skeletal series. More severe osteophytes were much more common

Patterns of vertebral ossification and pelvic abnormalities in paralysis: a study of 200 patients.

To clarify the characteristics, extent, and frequency of spinal ossification and abnormalities of the sacroiliac joint, symphysis pubis, and hip in paralysis, routine radiographs of the lumbar spine, pelvis, and abdomen were retrospectively evaluated in 95 quadriplegic, 105 paraplegic, and 100 age-matched control patients, with attention to age and race and to spinal level and duration of paralysis. The spinal radiographs were evaluated for presence of osteophytes, syndesmophytes, paravertebral ossification, and flowing hyperostosis characteristic of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (D

Relationship between spinal osteoarthritis and vertebral fractures in men older than 50 years: data from the Camargo Cohort Study.

Spinal osteoarthritis has been suggested as a risk factor for vertebral fractures. However, results are conflicting: most of the data are focused on the lumbar region, and referred to postmenopausal women, whereas data for men are scarce. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between spinal osteoarthritis and vertebral fractures in men over 50 years of age. We conducted a cross-sectional study, nested in a prospective population-based cohort, including 507 community-dwelling men, 93 of them with at least one vertebral fracture. Vertebral fractures, osteophytosis, and disc space n

The distribution, determinants, and clinical correlates of vertebral osteophytosis: a population based survey.

OBJECTIVE: Vertebral osteophytes are a characteristic feature of intervertebral disc degeneration. There are, however, few population data concerning the occurrence of and clinico-biological correlates of vertebral osteophytes in both the dorsal and lumbar spine. Our purpose was to determine the frequency and distribution of anterior osteophytes in the thoracic and lumbar spine, and their relationship with both various putative risk factors, including physical activity and obesity, and self-reported back pain. METHODS: Men and women aged 50 years and over were recruited from primary care base

The trefoil configuration of the lumbar vertebral canal. A study of South African skeletal material.

The shallow lateral recesses of the trefoil shape of the lumbar spinal canal have been implicated in the production of the spinal stenosis syndrome. In the present study, 485 skeletons of South African Blacks and Whites were examined in order to establish the incidence and possible genesis of the trefoil configuration. The overall incidence was 14 per cent, with little variation between the sexes or races. The incidence was not related to increasing age, measured stenosis of the spinal canal or osteophytosis. Of 74 trefoil-shaped vertebrae, 68 (92 per cent) were found at the fifth lumbar level

A Case of Thoracic Spondylosis Deformans and Multilevel Instrumented Spinal Fusion in an 84-Year-Old Male.

Spondylosis deformans is a type of spinal claw osteophytosis which can be found on the anterolateral vertebral bodies of any region, and which consists of protrusions of intervertebral disc tissue covered by a bony shell. We report here a case of thoracic spondylosis deformans and multilevel instrumented fusion found during routine dissection of a cadaver. Theories of the etiology of this condition are reviewed in general, and with respect to this specific case and the potential interaction of the presenting comorbidities. The clinical implications of these osteophytes, including musculoskelet

Articular manifestations of acromegaly.

Forty-five patients with acromegaly or gigantism were reviewed for musculoskeletal abnormalities. Abnormalities of peripheral joints occurred in 74% of the patients and spinal involvement in 47%, leading to significant morbidity. Joint abnormalities most frequently affected the large joints (hips, knees and shoulders) but the wrist and hand were also involved. The radiological features of acromegalic arthropathy are described, including vertical widening of the hip joint, enthesopathy and osteophytosis. A favourable response to treatment is associated with a less severe arthropathy and a good

[Bone diseases with pain. Spondylosis].

Spondylosis is a common condition but not always symptomatic. Symptoms that manifest are grouped into axial pain, radiculopathy and myelopathy. An understanding of the pathophysiology of these conditions allows us to clinically determine whether the patients' symptoms are likely a result of spinal pathology and, in many cases, will also allow us to further localize a specific level within the spine. The most part patients with axial symptoms are best treated without surgery, whereas some patients with radiculopathy or myelopathy will continue to be disabled by their pain or dismobility and may

The pathogenesis of cervical spondylosis.

Cervical spondylosis is a generalized disease process affecting all levels of the cervical spine. Cervical spondylosis encompasses a sequence of degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs, osteophytosis of the vertebral bodies, hypertrophy of the facets and laminal arches, and ligamentous and segmental instability. The natural history of cervical spondylosis is associated with the aging process. Senescent and pathologic processes are thus morphologically indistinguishable. Clinical manifestations of cervical spondylosis may arise when morphologic sequelae are superimposed on a developmen

Determinants of the rate of bone loss in normal postmenopausal women.

Despite a large number of studies assessing relationships between putative risk factors and bone density, it is not known which factors influence the rate of axial bone loss in normal postmenopausal women. We have examined the relationships between the rate of bone loss (delta BMD) and variables related to calcium metabolism, lifestyle, diet (calcium, sodium, caffeine, and protein), body composition, muscle strength, sex hormones, and spinal osteophytosis in 122 normal postmenopausal women participating in a 2-yr prospective randomized placebo-controlled trial of calcium supplementation. [Appropriateness and limitations of bone mineral measurements by DXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) in the elderly--comparison with x-ray findings].

A group of 674 (266 males and 410 females) elderly living in a rural community of Nangai Village, Akita Prefecture, were subjects of bone mineral measurements in the lumbar spine and three areas of proximal femur (femoral neck; FN, trochanter; TR and Ward's triangle; WD). Measurement was by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) set in a mobile van during mass health examination. The purpose of this study was to verify the appropriateness and imitations in the bone mineral measurements by DXA in elderly who have other aging related abnormal calcifications such as osteophytosis in the lumbar sp

Degenerative spondylolisthesis is associated with low spinal bone density: a comparative study between spinal stenosis and degenerative spondylolisthesis.

Spinal stenosis and degenerative spondylolisthesis share many symptoms and the same treatment, but their causes remain unclear. Bone mineral density has been suggested to play a role. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in spinal bone density between spinal stenosis and degenerative spondylolisthesis patients. 81 patients older than 60 years, who underwent DXA-scanning of their lumbar spine one year after a lumbar spinal fusion procedure, were included. Radiographs were assessed for disc height, vertebral wedging, and osteophytosis. Pain was assessed using the Low Back Pain Ra

A novel approach to symptomatic lumbar facet joint synovial cyst injection and rupture using iGuide navigational software: A case report and review.

Spinal synovial cysts are benign protrusions of facet joint capsules caused by degenerative spondylosis, most frequently involving the L4-5 level, and commonly lead to symptoms of back pain, radiculopathy and neurogenic claudication. Although percutaneous treatment via facet joint steroid injection with cyst rupture can provide significant symptom relief, cyst rupture is not always achievable via an indirect trans-facet approach due to limited access from severe degenerative changes. In this case, we describe a successful approach to direct cyst access using a laser-guided navigational softwar
