Spirogyra neglecta Aqueous Extract Attenuates LPS-Induced Renal Inflammation.

Spirogyra neglecta (SN), commonly named "Tao" in Thai, is a genus of filamentous green macroalgae. SN contains polyphenols such as isoquercetin, catechin, hydroquinone and kaempferol. These constituents exhibit beneficial effects including anti-oxidant, anti-gastric ulcer, anti-hyperglycaemia and anti-hyperlipidaemia in both in vitro and in vivo models. Whether SN extract (SNE) has an anti-inflammatory effect in vivo remains unclear. This study examined the effect of SNE on renal function and renal organic transport in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced renal inflammation in rats. Rats were rand

Rhizoid differentiation in Spirogyra: position sensing by terminal cells.

Some species of Spirogyra anchor themselves to the substrate by differentiating rhizoids. A rhizoid is differentiated only from the terminal cell, suggesting that this cell can recognize its terminal position in a filament. In the present study, we have analyzed the mechanism for position sensing by the terminal cell. When a filament is cut, a new cell occupies the terminal position, and three phenomena are induced: (1) the cell wall of the cut cell detaches from the new terminal cell; (2) adhesive material is secreted by the terminal cell; and (3) the terminal cell begins to differentiate a r

SOME PROPERTIES OF PROTOPLASMIC GELS : I. TENSION IN THE CHLOROPLAST OF SPIROGYRA.

The chloroplast of Spirogyra is a long, spirally coiled ribbon which may contract to form a short, nearly straight rod. This happens under natural conditions and it can also be produced by a variety of inorganic salts and by some organic substances. It also occurs when the chloroplast is freed by centrifugal force from the clear peripheral protoplasm which is in contact with the cellulose wall. It would therefore seem that the chloroplast may be passively stretched by the action of the clear protoplasm and hence it contracts as soon as it is set free. This contraction happens in dead as well a

Biosorption of Cr(III) from aqueous solution using algal biomass spirogyra spp.

In the present investigation, a fresh water green algae spirogyra spp. was used as an inexpensive and efficient biosorbent for Cr(III) removal from aqueous solution. The algal biomass was treated with 0.1M NaOH, 0.2M CaCl(2) and 5% HCHO. The biosorption efficiency was compared with untreated biomass. The effects of various physico-chemical parameters were studied, e.g. pH 3.0-6.0, initial metal ions concentration 20-150mgL(-1), algal dose 1.0-3.0gL(-1), and contact time 15-180min, respectively. Biosorption of Cr(III) is highly pH dependent. Maximum 81.02% adsorption of Cr(III) was observed wit

Preventive Effects of Spirogyra neglecta and a Polysaccharide Extract against Dextran Sodium Sulfate Induced Colitis in Mice.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) results from colonic epithelial barrier defects and impaired mucosal immune responses. In this study, we aimed to investigate the modifying effects of a Spirogyra neglecta extract (SNE), a polysaccharide extract (PE) and a chloroform fraction (CF) on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice and to determine the mechanisms. To induce colitis, ICR mice received 3% DSS in their drinking water for 7 days. Seven days preceding the DSS treatment, oral administration of SNE, PE and CF at doses of 50, 25 and 0.25 mg/kg body weight (low dose), 200, 100 and 1 mg/kg bo

Allelopathic effects of gramineous plant extracts on Spirogyra communis growth: insights from Zizania latifolia, Phragmites australis, and Digitaria sanguinalis.

The overgrowth of algae, such as Spirogyra communis (S. communis), has emerged as a significant ecological issue, exacerbated by the increasing problem of eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. S. communis overgrowth can result in the deterioration of water quality and a decline in biodiversity. To mitigate the proliferation of S. communis under conditions of water eutrophication, the inhibitory effects of ethanol extracts from gramineous plants, Zizania latifolia (Z. latifolia), Phragmites australis (P. australis), and Digitaria sanguinalis (D. sanguinalis) on the growth of S. communis were in

Species Composition and Biomass Dynamics of Filamentous Algae and Their Environmental Drivers in Eriocheir sinensis Aquaculture Ponds.

Filamentous opportunistic algae, which behave as opportunistic species, are frequently observed in Eriocheir sinensis aquaculture ponds. These algae can entangle Eriocheir sinensis and release harmful substances during decomposition, thereby negatively impacting farming performance. At present, their management largely depends on non-selective herbicides, while fundamental research on species composition and biomass dynamics remains limited. In this study, 19 aquaculture ponds across five E. sinensis farms in Shanghai were monitored over a two-year period. Filamentous algae species were identi

Comparison of UVB effects on growth and induction of UVB screening compounds in isolates of metaphytic algae from temperate zone streams and ponds.

Filaments in the surface layers of metaphytic mats are exposed to high photon flux densities of PAR and UVBR. We investigated the effect of UVBR exposure on growth of eight isolates of common metaphytic algae (Cladophora, Mougeotia, Oedogonium, Pithophora, Spirogyra, and Zygnema) acclimated to either high or low PAR levels prior to UVBR exposure. All isolates acclimated to low PAR exhibited significant reductions in growth rate caused by the UVBR exposure (P < 0.05). Acclimation to high PAR resulted in seven of the isolates being more tolerant of the UVB exposure. The two Zygnema isolates exhi

Freshwater macrophyte type (macroalgae versus phanerogams) mainly determines detritus-derived greenhouse gases production: A microcosm experiment.

Freshwater ecosystems are crucial in the global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as CH4. Macrophytes are the main organic matter (i.e., detritus) supplier to the sediment of these systems, thus controlling CH4 production. However, species-specific differences (structure and composition) may determine contrasting patterns of detritus transformation into CH4. Furthermore, eutrophication can affect the degradation and, consequently, CH4 production. We performed a 64-day microcosm experiment with anoxic incubations of detritus from seven phylogenetically different macrophytes (two charoph
