Redescription of Onchocerca lupi (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) with histopathological observations.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerca lupi is a dog parasite of increasing zoonotic concern, with new human cases diagnosed in Turkey, Tunisia, Iran, and the United States. Information about the morphology of this nematode is scant and a detailed re-description of this species is overdue. In addition, histopathological data of potential usefulness for the identification of O. lupi infections are provided. METHODS: Male and female nematodes, collected from the connective tissue of a dog, were examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and an histological evaluation was performed

Equine stomach worm, Drashia megastoma (Spirurida: Habronematidae): first SEM report.

Drashia megastoma (Spirurida: Habronematidae) occurs in nodules in the stomach wall and rarely free in the stomach of the horse, mule and zebra throughout the world. D. megastoma develops in the housefly Musca domestica and causes gastric haemorrhage or even perforation of the stomach. Larvae of this nematode may be found in the lung, skin and eye of the host. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface ultrastructure of adult worms of this nematode. In both sexes, the head end was separated from the rest of the body by a constriction. The stoma was infundibuliform with a

Human ocular onchocerciasis caused by Onchocerca lupi (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) in Iran.

Cases of canine onchocerciasis caused by Onchocerca lupi are increasingly reported from Europe and the western United States of America. The zoonotic role of this parasite had already been suspected in Europe as the clinical signs and histopathology seen in two ocular cases from Albania and the Crimean region were very similar to those of canine ocular onchocerciasis. In the most recent reports of human onchocerciasis, O. lupi has been morphologically and molecularly identified as the causative agent of ocular infestation in two patients from Turkey, and one patient from Tunisia. Here, we repo

[Gnathostoma binucleatum (Spirurida: Gnathostomatidae) from the freshwater fish in Tabasco, Mexico].

Human gnathostomiasis is a food-born parasitic disease of relative importance in many countries in Southeast Asia. It is caused by several species of nematodes of the genus Gnathostoma. In Mexico is an emerging public health problem since 1970, when first cases were reported. Until today, larval morphometric characters that have been proposed to differentiate between the three species of Gnathostoma present in this country, are not satisfactory. Recently, the presence of advanced third-stage larvae AdvL3 (infective form for humans) in freshwater fishes from Pantanos de Centla, Tabasco. was rec

Unusual localization of Dirofilaria repens (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) infection in the testicle of a dog.

This report describes an uncommon localization of Dirofilaria repens in the testicle of a nine-year-old dog from southern Italy. The dog underwent neutring and three adult nematodes were found in the tunica vaginalis. At gross anatomy, no pathological changes were observed on the tunica, in the testicle or epididymis. The parasites, one female and two males, were morphologically and molecularly identified as D. repens. This is the first report of D. repens in the canine testicle in Italy. This case report highlights the asymptomatic nature of D. repens infection, suggesting that dogs living in

Eyeworms of wild birds and new record of Thelazia (Thelaziella) aquilina (Nematoda: Spirurida).

The eyeworms of the subgenus Thelaziella infect orbital cavities, conjunctival sacs and lachrymal ducts of many wild birds, being able to cause conjunctivitis. In Brazil, at least 10 species of Thelaziella have been described. Here we present a brief review of cases of Thelazia (Thelaziella) aquilina and describe the infection of this parasite in Harpia harpyja, as a new host record. Two nematodes were collected from the surface of the cornea of an adult female H. harpyja in the Amazon region (Brazil) and were morphologically identified as two males of T. (T.) aquilina. This data demonstrated

Pathological and parasitological traits in experimentally infected cats with Gnathostoma binucleatum (Spirurida: Gnathostomatidae).

This study aims to describe some of the unknown pathological and parasitological traits of experimental feline gnathostomosis. Thirteen female cats were orally inoculated with 30 advanced third-stage Gnathostoma binucleatum larvae and were euthanized at various post-infection (p.i.) periods. Clinically, the cats presented with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and other nonspecific signs. None of the cats shed eggs in their fecal matter. One cat, euthanized at 6 months p.i., developed a fibrous vascular nodule 2-3 cm in diameter within its gastric wall. The nodule contained caverns filled with

Chromosomes of Onchocerca volvulus (Spirurida: Onchocercidae): a comparative study between Nigeria and Guatemala.

Chromosomes of Nigerian Onchocerca volvulus were compared with those of Guatemalan O. volvulus. Both parasites had basically the same chromosomal construct (2n = 8, XY type). Autosomes consisted of a pair of large and two smaller pairs. Sex chromosomes were made up of medium sized X chromosome and very small Y chromosome. It was not possible to infer the position of the centromeres.

Filarial nematode (order: Spirurida) surveillance in urban habitats, in the city of Pécs (Hungary).

As part of the seasonal mosquito control activities in the city of Pécs (Baranya County, Hungary), a total of 1123 adult female mosquitoes belonging to 18 species (including the invasive species Aedes koreicus) were collected from human-inhabited areas, using CO2-baited traps, during two consecutive years. To survey the presence and prevalence of filarial parasites in these mosquitoes, we performed a molecular survey for filarial DNA, attempted by PCR using generic primers (COI), and followed by DNA sequencing. Filaroid nematode DNA was detected in 4% of investigated mosquito pools. Out of 410

Dirofilaria asiatica sp. nov. (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) - Defined using a combined morphological-molecular approach.

Parasitic nematodes of the family Onchocercidae (superfamily Filarioidea) have evolved alongside vertebrate hosts for millions of years. While morphological methods have played a central role in identifying species, many taxa remain cryptic and are challenging to differentiate, complicating diagnosis and the understanding of their epidemiology. Among the clinically relevant genera are Onchocerca and Dirofilaria, the latter being responsible for illnesses such as heartworm disease in canines and rare zoonotic infections in humans. Despite advances in our knowledge of the canine heartworm (Dirof

Ultrastructural characterization of male and female Physaloptera rara (Spirurida: Physalopteridae): feline stomach worms.

Physaloptera rara (Spirurida: Physalopteridae) has been found in dogs, coyotes, raccoons, wolves, foxes, cats, and bobcats in North America. The parasites' developmental cycles involve insects, including beetles, cockroaches, and crickets, as intermediate hosts. The nematodes firmly attach to the wall of the stomach and duodenum, where they feed on the mucosa and suck blood. Frequent movement of these nematodes results in erosions and ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract. The present study reports the morphological features of adult P. rara using scanning electron microscopy. Adult worms were

Case report: First evidence of human zoonotic infection by Onchocerca lupi (Spirurida, Onchocercidae).

In the past decades, cases of canine ocular onchocercosis have been reported worldwide, particularly in the United States and Europe. Onchocerca lupi, originally described from a wolf, has been implicated in some of these cases, and its zoonotic role has been hypothesized on the basis of the reexamination of two cases of human ocular onchocerciasis. In the present study, we describe, for the first time, the occurrence of O. lupi in the subconjunctival region of the human eye in a patient from Turkey. The nematode was identified as O. lupi based on its morphology and molecular phylogenetic anal

Susceptibility of mansonia indiana (Diptera: Culicidae) to nocturnally subperiodic Brugia malayi (Spirurida: Filariodea).

Mosquitoes, Mansonia indiana Edwards, 1930, were collected from non-endemic area of human lymphatic filariasis and tested for their susceptibility of infection using nocturnally subperiodic Brugia malayai Buckley & Edeson, 1956. Three cats naturally infected with B. malayi were used in the experiment for mosquitoes feeding. The data revealed that the susceptibility of mosquito infection ranged from 30 to 70%. The results also revealed that the susceptibility rates were not linearly correlated to the microfilarial densities in the cat at the time of feeding. The microfilarial density in cats ra
