Case of acute ileus caused by a spirurina larva.

A growing body of clinical cases suggests that a kind of nematode larva, type X larva of the suborder Spirurina that inhabits firefly squids (Watasenia scintillans, or 'Hotaru-ika' in Japanese), can cause acute ileus in humans. However, the larva itself has rarely been found in the wall of the obstructed intestine. We describe here a case of acute ileus, in which a type X spirurina larva was found histologically. A 60-year-old Japanese man suffered from acute abdomen, and an emergency laparotomy revealed a marked stenosis of the ileum. Histological study of the surgically resected ileum showed

Morphological and molecular characterization of a novel Spirurina species (Nematoda: Spirurida) from Brachyplatystoma platynema (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) in the southern Peruvian Amazon.

Larval nematodes are frequently overlooked in parasitological surveys of Neotropical freshwater fishes due to their limited morphological differentiation and the scarcity of molecular references. As a result, their diversity and life cycles remain poorly understood. In this study, we provide the first record and integrative characterization of a spirurine nematode larva infecting the slobbering catfish Brachyplatystoma platynema Boulenger, 1898 (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from the southern Peruvian Amazon. A total of 135 larvae were recovered. Molecular analyses based on the 18S ribosomal RNA

[Clinical study of ten cases with acute abdomen after eating raw firefly squid (Watasenia scintillans, Hotaruika), which are probably due to type X larvae of the suborder spirurina].

We studied ten cases with abdominal pain after eating raw firefly squid, Watasenia scintillans, Hotaruika. Characteristic clinical features were abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, creeping eruption and ileus with ascites. In ten patients, there were all cases with abdominal pain, nine with nausea and vomiting, four with diarrhea, one with creeping eruption, six with ileus. Laboratory examination revealed eosinophilia on peripheral blood in ten cases and high serum IgE value in nine cases. The infection rate of type X lavae of the suborder spirurina in Watasenia scintillans is almost 3

First record of the nematode Echinocephalus pseudouncinatus (Gnathostomatidae, Spirurida) in an edible, commercial host, the pen shell Atrina maura (Bivalvia: Pinnidae).

We describe a nematode infestation of the Atrina maura, the most valuable pen shell fished in Mexico, for the first time. Observations by Mexican authorities indicated that parasites were found encysted in pen shell gonads. The aims of this study included: (i) to identify the parasite morphologically; (ii) to quantify the infestation in different tissues of the pen shell; and (iii) to establish the seasonal variation in gonadal development. During 2015, 10 to 40 pen shells were randomly collected each month from the same commercial bed, and gonads were preserved and processed histologically to

RICTULARIA JIYEONI N. SP. (NEMATODA: RICTULARIIDAE) FROM THE STRIPED FIELD MOUSE, APODEMUS AGRARIUS, IN KOREA.

Rictularia jiyeoni n. sp. from the small intestine of the striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius, in Korea, is described and illustrated. Specimens were studied using light and scanning electron microscopies. This rictulariid nematode is closest to the Rictularia species that have a reduced number of combs and spines. However, the new species can be differentiated from the other species of Rictularia by having 36-58 perioral denticles, a buccal capsule with a single esophageal tooth, and 37-44 pairs of combs and spines of which 32-37 are prevulvar and 5-11 are postvulvar.

Morphological and Molecular Identification of Physaloptera praeputialis Infection and Description of Associated Gastric Lesions in the European Wildcat (Felis silvestris).

Physaloptera praeputialis is a common gastric spirurine of domestic and wild felids worldwide, but its pathological importance in European felids and the molecular characterisation of European isolates remain poorly documented. This study identifies P. praeputialis in European wildcats (Felis silvestris) from central Spain using morphological and molecular approaches and describes the associated gastric lesions. Thirty free-ranging wildcats were examined by necropsy, coproscopical analysis, and post-mortem inspection. Adult Physaloptera specimens were recovered from 11/30 (36.7%) wildcats, and

Differential detection of Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum eggs in intestinal and caecal excreta of floor-housed laying hens: a longitudinal study.

Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum, the most prevalent nematodes of chickens, inhabit the small intestine and caeca, respectively, and often co-occur. Current excreta egg count (EEC) methods do not differentiate between their eggs, and although chickens produce two distinct excreta types - intestinal excreta (IE) and caecal excreta (CE) - the distribution of eggs of these species across them remains poorly understood. Forty Hy-Line Brown laying hens (40 weeks, mean body weight (BW) 2·07 ± 0·02 kg), cleared of prior nematode infection and artificially infected with A. galli (n = 20) or H.

Central nervous signs, blindness and cerebral vermicosis in free-ranging peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) associated with aberrant larval migrations.

Four free-ranging peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) were submitted with a history of unilateral or bilateral blindness and central nervous signs to a veterinary clinic in Germany. There were no indications of trauma or ocular disease. Likewise, other differential diagnoses for CNS signs were ruled out within the diagnostic process. The clinical diagnostic panel in live falcons included general examination, radiography, endoscopy, hematology, ophthalmoscopy and parasitological examination of the feces, blood gas analysis and blood chemistry as well as computed tomography, and magnetic resona

Description and Molecular Differentiation of a New Falcaustra (Nematode: Kathlaniidae) from the Indochinese Water Dragon, Physignathus cocincinus (Squamata: Agamidae) in North-central Vietnam.

PURPOSE: Although ophthalmic viscosurgical devices are quite important for safe cataract surgery, currently, postoperative residual ophthalmic viscosurgical devices can cause various complications. Previously, we developed a method to visualize residual ophthalmic viscosurgical devices after irrigation/aspiration in vitro and found that the amount of residual ophthalmic viscosurgical device on a single-piece intraocular lens was greater than that on a three-piece intraocular lens. In the present study, we compared the amounts of residual ophthalmic viscosurgical device among various foldable i

Co-expulsion of Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum by chickens.

Worm expulsion is known to occur in mammalian hosts exposed to mono-species helminth infections, whilst this phenomenon is poorly described in avian hosts. Mono-species infections, however, are rather rare under natural circumstances. Therefore, we quantified the extent and duration of worm expulsion by chickens experimentally infected with both Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum, and investigated the accompanying humoral and cell-mediated host immune responses in association with population dynamics of the worms. Results demonstrated the strong co-expulsion of the two ascarid species in
