Both Spodoptera frugiperda and Spodoptera litura are highly invasive pest species that can attack agricultural crops in new areas, causing high economic damage. The survival of invasive species is highly affected by their ability to adapt to new environments as well as climate change. Rapid cold hardening (RCH) and rapid heat hardening (RHH) play important roles in ecological adaptation and survival under fluctuating temperature conditions. To compare the rates of survival, development, and reproduction between S. frugiperda and S. litura, the effects of RCH (5°C for 12 h followed by -10°C for

Lepidopteran-infecting baculoviruses represent one of the most promising alternatives for pest biocontrol. In particular, Spodoptera frugiperda granulovirus (SfGV) infects the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, an increasingly important pest for maize and other crops around the world. SfGV has been investigated due to its capacity to enhance other baculovirus infectivity and as a biopesticide itself. Although the proteome of SfGV occlusion bodies (OB) is fundamental for their infectivity properties, we still lack a detailed understanding of its protein components and how they compare with ot

Natalisin (NTL) is a conserved neuropeptide, only present in insects, that has been reported to regulate their sexual activity. In this study, we investigated the involvement of NTL in the reproductive behaviors of a major invasive pest, Spodoptera frugiperda. We identified NTL precursor-encoded transcripts, and evaluated their transcript levels in different stages and tissues of S. frugiperda. The results showed that the NTL transcript level was expressed in both male and female pupae and both male and female adults in the later stage. It was highly expressed in male pupae, 3-day-old male and

Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a serious invasive pest, which has attracted concern regarding the effectiveness of environmental bioinsecticide as a substitution for synthetic insecticide in controlling its damage to numerous agricultural crops in recent years. Hence, laboratory and field experiments have investigated insecticidal toxicity in S. frugiperda by 5 insecticides and have determined the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and detoxifying enzymes, namely mixed function oxidase (MFO), carboxylesterase (CarE), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) on 3rd instar lar

The homeotic gene Antennapedia (Antp) has been identified as playing a pivotal role in the morphogenesis of the thorax and wings across various insect species. Leveraging insights from previous studies, the functional characterization of Antp in S. frugiperda was undertaken using RT-qPCR and the CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing system. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that Antp shares a high degree of sequence homology among Lepidoptera species. The expression profile of SfAntp was detected by RT-qPCR. The results showed that SfAntp was expressed in the whole growth cycle of S. frugiperda, the express

Rice, Oryza sativa, is the most important staple food for a significant portion of the world's population. Despite the importance of rice, however, induced resistance to insects has not been thoroughly studied in rice; in fact, to our knowledge, direct induced resistance after injury by chewing insects has not been shown in rice. We conducted a series of experiments designed to characterize direct induced resistance in rice after feeding by larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith) and application of jasmonic acid. Weight gains and relative growth rates of fall armyworm l

Plant sterols constitute the sole source of sterol nutrition for insect herbivores, yet the sterol content of plants is complex and variable, and insect sterol nutrient regulation remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated cholesterol regulation inSpodoptera frugiperda using a geometric framework for nutrition. In the choice experiment, we provided larvae with eight food pairings. The insects did not adjust their feeding on the pair of complementary diets to achieve a specific cholesterol intake target. In the no-choice experiment, seven foods with different cholesterol concentra

Polydnaviruses (PDVs) are obligatory symbionts found in thousands of endoparasitoid species and essential for successful parasitism. The two genera of PDVs, ichnovirus (IV) and bracovirus (BV), use different sets of virulence factors to ensure successful parasitization of the host. Previous studies have shown that PDVs target apoptosis, one of the innate antiviral responses in many host organisms. However, IV and BV have been shown to have opposite effects on this process. BV induces apoptosis in host cells, whereas some IV proteins have been shown to have anti-apoptotic activity. The differen

Dopa decarboxylase (DDC) is a crucial enzyme that regulates melanin synthesis and plays an essential role in cuticular pigmentation and insect development. However, the function of DDC in the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is not yet well understood. In this study, we knocked out the DDC gene and found that mosaic mutants displayed an albino phenotype across all life stages, including larval, pupal, and adult stages. Notably, homozygous DDC mutants showed complete larval albinism, exhibited developmental delays, and frequently failed to pupate, ultimately leading to death. Histological

Invertebrate iridescent viruses (IIVs, family Iridoviridae) are icosahedral double-stranded DNA viruses that infect a wide range of invertebrates, particularly in humid and aquatic environments. During field trials in Chiapas, southern Mexico, larvae of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), displayed an unexpected lavender iridescence, leading to the discovery of novel IIV isolates from this major agricultural pest. Restriction endonuclease analysis revealed evident diversity among isolates from individual infected larvae. Although one field experiment yielded inco

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a global pest of multiple economically important row crops and the development of resistance to commercially available insecticidal classes has inhibited FAW control. Thus, there is a need to identify chemical scaffolds that can provide inspiration for the development of novel insecticides for FAW management. This study aimed to assess the sensitivity of central neurons and susceptibility of FAW to chloride channel modulators to establish a platform for repurposing existing insecticides or designing new chemicals capable of controlling FAW. Plants have developed various resistance mechanisms against herbivorous insects through prolonged coevolution. Plant defence responses can be triggered by specific compounds present in insect saliva. Apyrase, a known enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP) into adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and inorganic phosphorus, has recently been identified in some herbivorous insects. However, whether insect salivary apyrase induces or inhibits plant responses remains poorly understood. In this study, we identified an apyrase-like protein in the

Neuropeptides control many physiological and behavioral processes, and so they are functionally important classes of cell-to-cell signaling molecules. Nowadays, the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is one of the most destructive agricultural pests in the world. In this study, we mined the publicly accessible genome assembly data for S. frugiperda, and the transcriptomic and proteomic data of the larval central nervous system (CNS) for putative neuropeptide-encoding, and subsequently we used these to anticipate a peptidome for this species. In essence, we could identify 57 orthologs of ins

Early instar larvae of the tobacco cutworm Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and the beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are recognized hosts of the parasitic wasp Microplitis prodeniae Rao and Kurian (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), although M. prodeniae has previously been regarded as monophagous. In this study, we found the immature period and longevity of M. prodeniae developing in S. exigua was similar to that in S. litura. It was shown that the development time of M. prodeniae in S. exigua was 15.1 ± 0.3 d, not significantly different from 15.0 ± 0.2 d in S. litur

Spodoptera frugiperda, known as the fall armyworm, is a highly destructive pest that greatly impacts worldwide agriculture, particularly maize and other key crops. Its rapid expansion and resistance to standard insecticides pose a significant threat to food security. As a result, effective and long-term pest management solutions are required. In this context, microbial biocontrol agents, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, offer an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. This study investigates S. cerevisiae's efficiency as a biocontrol agent against S. frugiperda. The S. ce

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a highly polyphagous agricultural pest that is widely distributed around the world and causes severe crop yield loss. Carvacrol showed adverse effects on many pests, such as larval death and growth inhibition. While the effects of carvacrol on S. frugiperda larvae are not yet known. In this study, the effects of carvacrol on S. frugiperda, including larval growth inhibition and mortality induction, were observed. The detoxification and digestive enzyme activities of larvae with 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg carvacrol treatments were analyzed. Carvacrol boosted t

Integrin members are cell adhesion receptors that bind to extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins to regulate cell-cell adhesion and cell-ECM adhesion. This process is essential for tissue development and organogenesis. The fusion of two testes is a physiological phenomenon that is required for sperm production and effective reproduction in many Lepidoptera. However, the molecular mechanism of testicular fusion is unclear. In Spodoptera litura, two separated testes fuse into a single testis during the larva-to-pupa transformation. We identified five α and five β integrin subunits that were closely

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, causes substantial annual agricultural production losses worldwide due to its resistance to many insecticides. Therefore, new insecticides are urgently needed to more effectively control FAW. Cyclosporin A (CsA) is a secondary metabolite of fungi; little is known about its insecticidal activity, especially for the control of FAW. In this study, we demonstrate that CsA shows excellent insecticidal activity (LC50 = 9.69 μg/g) against FAW through significant suppression of calcineurin (CaN) activity, which is a new target for pest control. We here review and discuss management options that growers in Europe could take in response to the expected invasion of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The focus is put on maize but the information provided is also relevant for other crops potentially affected. A sound forecasting system for fall armyworm both on a regional as well as at local scale should be established to alert growers as early as possible. Whilst a number of cultural control methods are adopted by maize growers in different regions globally to fight fall armyworm, many of them may either n

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) hydrolyses phospholipids at sn-2 position to release free fatty acids and lysophospholipids. Secretory type of PLA2 (sPLA2) has been found in many different animals including insects. Insect sPLA2s have been divided into venomous and nonvenomous PLA2s. A non-venomous sPLA2 (Se-sPLA2) has been identified in beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua. Its high enzyme activity is detected in hemolymph of naïve larvae. However, the physiological role of high sPLA2 activity in hemolymph remains unclear. To determine the physiological role of sPLA2 in hemolymph, a recombinant Se-sPLA2
