[Are Fungal Spores Relevant Outdoor Allergens?].

Alternaria alternata spores are important allergens causing "hayfever". Outdoor fungal exposure is primarily associated with increased asthma symptoms and increased risk of asthma exacerbations. In our outpatient-clinic, we investigated patients who presented with symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis and respiratory symptoms in the summertime. We found a sensitisation to Alternaria alternata in about 6 % of the investigated patients. Especially in children and teenagers, the sensitisation is clinically important. The spores of Alternaria alternata are responsible for the development and persist

Nutritional benefit of fungal spores for honey bee workers.

The collection of fungal spores by honey bees, Apis mellifera, can be classified as active or passive, the latter when spores are associated with pollen, nectar or honey dew. While low quality and shortage of pollen have been raised as hypotheses for fungal spore collection, the nutritional value of fungal spores for honey bees is poorly understood. Here we investigated the effect of consumption of fungal spores on survival, ovarian activation and the development of the hypopharyngeal glands (HPGs) in honey bee workers. Two pollen diets (Eucalyptus sp. pollen and a multifloral pollen) suppleme

Outdoor fungal spores and acute respiratory effects in vulnerable individuals.

BACKGROUND: Many outdoor fungal spores are ubiquitous, respirable and possibly allergenic. They may contribute to asthma symptoms; however, little is known about their effects on respiratory function. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if outdoor fungal spore levels were associated with lung function or airway inflammation, and whether fungal sensitization or current asthma modified any associations. METHODS: Cross-sectional associations between same day (Lag0) and cumulative 3-day lagged (Lag0-3) counts of 12 outdoor fungal spore taxa and pre-bronchodilator spirometry (FEV1, FVC, FEF25%-75%), bronch

New caloporoside derivatives and their inhibition of fungal spore germination.

In our ongoing screening culture fluid extracts of Gloeoporus (Caloporus) dichrous strain 83065 inhibited the germination of Magnaporthe grisea and Fusarium graminearum spores. While isolating the active metabolites two new caloporosides, caloporoside G and caloporoside H, in addition to the known caloporoside derivatives F-16438G, caloporoside A, and 2-hydroxy-6-(16-hydroxyheptadecyl)benzoic acid were obtained.

Estimating Lung Deposition of Fungal Spores Using Actual Airborne Spore Concentrations and Physiological Data.

Exposure to bioaerosols has been implicated in adverse respiratory symptoms, infectious diseases, and bioterrorism. Although these particles have been measured within residential and occupational settings in multiple studies, the deposition of bioaerosol particles within the human respiratory system has been only minimally explored. This paper uses real-world environmental measurement data of total fungal spores using Air-o-Cell cassettes in 16 different apartments and residents' physiological data in those apartments to predict respiratory deposition of the spores. The airborne spore concentr

UV-Raman Spectroscopic Identification of Fungal Spores Important for Respiratory Diseases.

Fungal spores are one of several environmental factors responsible for causing respiratory diseases like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and aspergillosis. These spores also are able to trigger exacerbations during chronic forms of disease. Different fungal spores may contain different allergens and mycotoxins, therefore the health hazards are varying between the species. Thus, it is highly important quickly to identify the composition of fungal spores in the air. In this study, UV-Raman spectroscopy with an excitation wavelength of 244 nm was applied to investigate eight

The role of airborne fungal spores from garbage dumps in respiratory diseases.

In recent years, there has been a growing global, regional and local concern about the potential health hazards associated with air pollution. Great attention has so far been paid to pollution associated with oxides of sulphur, CO, nitrogen oxides, O(3), trace organics, selected trace metals like lead, and miscelleneous suspended particulate matter. But, apart from these much talked about pollutants, urban air pollution associated with fungal spores from garbage pose a major environmental human health problem in most urban centres in Africa. Garbage probably accounts for most of the fungal spo

Inhibitors of spore germination act against diverse human fungal pathogens.

Current antifungal drugs often cause severe side effects due to the conservation of molecular targets between fungal and mammalian cells. One way to avoid host toxicity in future antifungals is to leverage molecules with targets involved in processes unique to fungi, such as spore germination. Germination is conserved in several of the most critical fungal pathogens but absent in mammalian cells. In this work we evaluated 191 small molecule inhibitors of Cryptococcus germination for their abilities to inhibit germination of another fungal pathogen, Aspergillus fumigatus , as well as yeast grow

Airborne and allergenic fungal spores of the Karachi environment and their correlation with meteorological factors.

Airborne fungal spores are well known to cause respiratory allergic diseases particularly bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, rhino-conjunctivitis and allergic broncho-pulmonary aspergillosis in both adults and children. In order to monitor and analyze airborne fungal flora of the Karachi environment, an aeromycological study was conducted using a Burkard 7-Day Recording Volumetric Spore Trap from January to December 2010. The data recorded from the Spore Trap was further analyzed for percent catch determination, total spores concentration, seasonal periodicities and diurnal variations. Clado

Inactivation of fungal spores in water using ozone: Kinetics, influencing factors and mechanisms.

Fungal contamination of drinking water sources is increasingly threatening the environment and human health. In this study, the inactivation of three genera of dominant fungi in drinking water sources using ozone was first reported. The inactivation of the fungal spores by ozone could be divided into two distinct stages: first a rapid reduction in survival, and then the inactivation at a slower rate. The secondary stage inactivation fitted the Chick-Watson model well, and there was no significant difference in the second-order inactivation rate constants of the three fungal spores (0.199-0.209

Fungal air-borne spores as health risk factors among workers in alimentary industries.

A survey to evaluate the occurrence of air-borne fungal spores in two different food industries, dairies and bakeries, was conducted. Our data revealed considerable fungal pollution in the environments of both industries, as well as some differences in the distribution of the genera of fungi recovered. Noteworthy was the frequent finding of numerous fungi frequently responsible for allergic rhinitis, asthma and other diseases, or well-known for their production of mycotoxins in foods or characterized by their degradative activity against various substances. Aspergillus, Candida, Fusarium, Geot

Advances in automatic airborne fungal spore monitoring: detection-efficiency test of the BAA500.

Fungal spores are a major component of ambient bioaerosols, contributing to environmental pollution relevant for human health, agriculture, and ecosystem management. Timely monitoring is critical, as spores can rapidly induce infections or allergic responses. Conventional Hirst-type samplers rely on time-consuming microscopic analysis, limiting near real-time reporting. Automated measurement systems offer an alternative, although their counting efficiency across fungal spore sizes and morphologies remains unclear. This study evaluates the performance of the BAA500 and Hirst-type sampler for fi
