Equestrian Sports Safety: An Update on Safety Equipment and Event Medical Coverage.

Equestrian sports are associated with high rates of major injury compared to collision and powered two-wheel sports. Advancements in rider and horse safety equipment and the implementation of comprehensive emergency action planning standards may help mitigate injuries, particularly in regard to the Olympic disciplines of dressage, show jumping, and three-day eventing covered in this review. Personal safety equipment to consider includes helmets, safety and air vests, and horse tack including safety stirrups, acoustic dampeners, and breakaway reins. Equestrian event medical coverage requires em

A Model of Collaboration Can Expand the Opportunities in Adaptive Sports Equipment.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation requires teamwork and innovation to help patients reach their goals and to optimize their quality of life, and one way is through participation in sports ( Sports Med Arthrosc Rev . 2019;27:73-82; PM R . 2015;7(10):1081-8; PM R . 2012;4(11):851-6; Phys Med Rehabil Clin N Am . 2019;30(1):289-99). Unfortunately, people with disabilities participate in sports ~20% less than their peers, and reasons for this disparity include equipment cost and availability ( Sports Med Arthrosc Rev . 2019;27:73-82; PM R . 2015;7(10):1081-8; Pediatrics . 2008;121(5):1057-61; Re

The effect of equipment scaling on children's sport performance: the case for tennis.

The influence of scaling court-size and net height on children's tennis performance was examined. Sixteen boys (9.7 ± 0.5 years) had to perform a 30-min match in four different conditions, where court-size and/or net height were scaled by using a scaling ratio based on the differences in temporal demands between the children and the adult game. These 30-min matches were analysed using Tennis Analyst (FairPlay Ltd., Jindalee, QLD, Australia) software to determine typical tennis match performance characteristics. Children hit more winners, more forced errors, played more volleys, struck more sho

A Review of Head Injury Metrics Used in Automotive Safety and Sports Protective Equipment.

Despite advances in the understanding of human tolerances to brain injury, injury metrics used in automotive safety and protective equipment standards have changed little since they were first implemented nearly a half-century ago. Although numerous metrics have been proposed as improvements over the ones currently used, evaluating the predictive capability of these metrics is challenging. The purpose of this review is to summarize existing head injury metrics that have been proposed for both severe head injuries, such as skull fractures and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and mild traumatic b

From expert opinion to data driven selection of sports equipment: Boot selection in alpine ski racers.

To compete successfully in alpine ski racing, not only physical, mental, and skiing technique preparation are important, but also wisely chosen and properly tuned skiing equipment. While equipment related safety aspects are mostly ensured by official rules (e.g., competition rules provided by the International Skiing Federation), the performance optimization and customization of equipment is mostly reliant on coaches and experts in the skiing industry. Therefore, knowledge often is dependent on individual person's experience and not publicly available. This aspect can also hinder companies or

Measuring the risk of sustaining injury in sport a novel approach to aid the re-design of personal protective equipment.

Despite the possibilities offered by new approaches in design and advances in materials and manufacturing methods, few items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used in sport have seen significant change for many decades. A major reason for this is the tradition and conservative attitudes associated with many sports, although the absence of appropriate tools and techniques to assist the design and development process has also played a large part. The aim of this study was to develop the first stage of a method of identifying specific regions of the human anatomy that are at the greatest ris

A 2-Year Follow-Up Study of Changes in Handgrip Strength in Young Athletes Playing With and Without Gripping Sports Equipment.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared changes in handgrip strength (HGS) over 2 years in young athletes participating in two sports: kendo, which involves gripping equipment during play, and soccer, which does not. METHODS: One hundred eleven young athletes (54 kendo boys [mean age at baseline: 10.1 ± 1.7 years] and 57 soccer boys [mean age at baseline: 10.3 ± 1.8 years]) underwent three HGS measurements, spaced 1 year apart (Test 1, Test 2, and Test 3). The Q-Q plot indicated some violations of normality; therefore, we used a robust repeated measures ANOVA function in R. RESULTS: We found evidenc

[Nerve entrapment syndromes in athletes].

Sports-related injuries most commonly involve the musculoskeletal system. However, physicians are less familiar with damage to the peripheral nerves attributable to particular sports activities. Nerve entrapment syndromes associated with physical activity may affect all nerves for which entrapment syndromes are known. Peripheral nerve lesions are serious and may delay or preclude the athletes' return to sports, especially in cases with a delayed diagnosis. The aim of the paper is to give an overview of chronic sports-related nerve lesions. Acute nerve injuries are not the focus of this review.

Sports Bra Preferences by Age and Impact of Breast Size on Physical Activity among American Females.

For many females, sports bras are an essential piece of equipment for participation in sports and physical activity. Breast pain or discomfort from lack of support may be a contributing factor to the noted gender disparity in physical activity of females compared to males. Our objective was to evaluate sports bra usage and characterize sports bra preferences of an active female cohort. This multicenter cross-sectional survey study was conducted at five geographically distinct academic centers. Our measure was administered during outpatient sports medicine clinic visits to females aged 11-64 ye

Sports participation for young athletes with medical conditions: Seizure disorder, infections and single organs.

Organized and recreational sports have been shown to be an important part of growth and development in children, adolescents and young adults. In addition to the health benefits of increased physical activity, sports also provide social benefits. Pediatricians play an important role in determining if young athletescan participate in various sports and the proper equipment or precautions that are necessary. This review provides information on sports participation for athletes with specific health considerations, such as: febrile illnesses, solitary organs, seizures, and skin infections.

Sports medicine for the internist.

Because of increasing participation in leisure sports and exercise rehabilitation programs, many patients are developing nonsurgical, soft tissue overuse syndromes. Many of these musculoskeletal problems arise because of underlying biomechanical difficulties, training errors, or improper use of equipment. Epidemiologic observations reveal that these individuals frequently visit a general medical practitioner before seeking the advice of an orthopedic specialist. Prompt diagnosis simply requires an appreciation of anatomy and an analytic understanding of sports biomechanics. Although compulsive
