Athletes competing in ultra-endurance sports should manage nutritional issues, especially with regards to energy and fluid balance. An ultra-endurance race, considered a duration of at least 6 h, might induce the energy balance (i.e., energy deficit) in levels that could reach up to ~7000 kcal per day. Such a negative energy balance is a major health and performance concern as it leads to a decrease of both fat and skeletal muscle mass in events such as 24-h swimming, 6-day cycling or 17-day running. Sport anemia caused by heavy exercise and gastrointestinal discomfort, under hot or cold envir

Physical activity and nutrition are inextricably linked in maintaining muscle and overall health, enhancing metabolic resilience, and preventing age-related muscle loss. Exercise acts as a powerful physiological stressor, inducing acute metabolic, endocrine, and immunological responses, while long-term training elicits structural and functional adaptations at the muscular, cardiovascular, and systemic levels. Proper nutritional strategies, aligned with the type, intensity, and duration of physical activity, provide the necessary substrates to fuel exercise, optimize recovery, and support muscl

Modern professional sports activities are characterized by high training and competitive loads, which are a factor affecting bone metabolism and leading to an increase in injuries, including due to osteoporotic disorders. Nutrition can be classified as a modifiable factor that determines the development and maintenance of bone mass and quality. Correction of athlete's nutrition is an important mechanism aimed at preventing disorders of bone metabolism in elite sports in order to reduce the risk of injuries of the musculoskeletal system. The aim of the research was to analyze modern scientific

Athletes are characterized by special nutritional needs. Meeting their dietary needs associated with intensive exercise is a prerequisite for effective training and success in sports competitions. Hence, it is important to supply key performance nutrients, such as macronutrients, antioxidants, calcium, vitamin D, or iron, in adequate quantities. The increased need for these nutrients makes it necessary to look for food products on the market that more fully cover these needs. Such products may include organic foods. According to research, they have unique properties and are richer in selected

Position Statement: The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) bases the following position stand on an analysis of the literature regarding the effects of β-Hydroxy-β-Methylbutyrate (HMB). The following 12 points have been approved by the Research Committee of the Society: 1. HMB is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine that is naturally produced in both humans and other animals. Two forms of HMB have been studied: Calcium HMB (HMB-Ca) and a free acid form of HMB (HMB-FA). HMB-FA appears to lead to increased appearance of HMB in the bloodstream when compared to HMB-Ca, though recen

Following a comprehensive review, the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) has developed an official position on the role of dietary antioxidants in exercise and sport. Antioxidants play a complex, context-dependent role in vivo; they can facilitate recovery from exercise but may also hinder training adaptations when consumed at supraphysiological doses. While endogenous antioxidant systems can effectively maintain redox balance, dietary sources, particularly whole foods, can help mitigate excessive oxidative stress following intense/heavy training or inadequate recovery. The influ

As a group, cyclists tend to have lower bone mass compared with other athletes, and nonathlete controls which may have negative consequences for fracture risk and longer term bone health. There are several cycling-specific factors that may contribute to this finding. These include, the low-impact, repetitive load nature of cycling which provides limited stimulus for bone metabolism; metabolic perturbations that occur following prolonged cycling that may lead to a transient increase in the rate of bone resorption; and nutritional factors, including low energy availability or nutrient inadequacy

As the biologically active component of glucose tolerance factor (GTF), the essential trace mineral chromium is now being marked to athletes. GTF potentiates insulin activity and is responsible for normal insulin function. Thus, insulin's effects on carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism are dependent upon the maintenance of adequate chromium stores. Due to excessive chromium loss and marginal chromium intake, athletes may have an increased requirement for chromium. Therefore, in some circumstances the dietary supplementation of a chromium compound may be efficacious. The restoration and ma

Unintentional doping, often caused by contaminated supplements or misinterpreted therapeutic prescriptions, poses significant health, ethical, and regulatory challenges in competitive sports. Understanding the cardiovascular risks associated with performance-enhancing substances (PESs) and the preventive role of nutrition requires integrated analysis. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Searches of comprehensive bibliographic databases yielded studies published between 2015 and November 2025. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed research on doping pr

CrossFit® has grown significantly in popularity among professional and recreational athletes in recent years, combining a variety of movements in what are known as "workout of the day" (WOD). Given the nature and demands of sport, proper nutrition is essential for optimizing athletes' health and performance. CrossFit® athletes often have a high body mass index (BMI), particularly men, due to greater muscle mass, whilst their body fat percentage is usually within a healthy range. However, a significant proportion of these individuals do not meet their energy requirements, particularly women, in

The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) has developed an official position on diets for body weight reduction. This critical analysis of the literature is intended to provide a scientific foundation for practitioners, coaches, and trainees regarding the effects of the major diet types in adults who are generally healthy, physically active, and/or athletic, while drawing from clinical research in those with overweight/obesity, when relevant. This position stand does not address acute dehydration-based weight cutting, pharmacotherapy (i.e. GLP-1RAs), or bariatric surgery. The follow

The effects of carbohydrate (CHO) intake on substrate metabolism, exercise capacity, and exercise performance have been studied for >100 y. From a metabolic perspective, the ergogenic effect of CHO intake is likely mediated by liver (and potentially muscle) glycogen sparing, maintenance of plasma glucose concentrations, and whole-body CHO oxidation rates, such that the required exercise intensity can be sustained for a longer duration thereby delaying fatigue. Accordingly, the 2016 sport nutrition guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine recommend CHO intakes ≤90 g/h (from multi

Optimal nutrition in athletes can contribute to training adaptations, recovery, performance, and injury prevention in addition to supporting their overall health and well-being. Macronutrient intake and the link to role in athletic performance has been investigated by several studies, while micronutrient intake in athletes appears to be understudied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess caloric and selected micronutrient intakes in female collegiate student-athletes across several sports. The participants from seven sports were instructed to complete 3-day food records; dietary i

Creatine monohydrate supplementation (CrM) is a safe and effective intervention for improving certain aspects of sport, exercise performance, and health across the lifespan. Despite its evidence-based pedigree, several questions and misconceptions about CrM remain. To initially address some of these concerns, our group published a narrative review in 2021 discussing the scientific evidence as to whether CrM leads to water retention and fat accumulation, is a steroid, causes hair loss, dehydration or muscle cramping, adversely affects renal and liver function, and if CrM is safe and/or effectiv

Implementing a high-quality approach to the methodological classification and control of the ovarian hormone status of female participants in research is challenging and complex. These complexities have likely hindered the formulation of robust conclusions regarding the effects of the ovarian hormones (estrogen and progesterone) on sport science outcomes. We have therefore developed practical study design tools and resources to aid researchers in the pursuit of high-quality research in women. Specifically, this paper presents a tiered framework outlining varying levels of methodological classi

Background: Vitamins are micronutrients involved in multiple physiological processes critical for athletic performance. Because athletes are often exposed to increased oxidative stress, higher metabolic turnover, and greater nutritional demands, which can potentially lead to deficiencies in vitamins, understanding vitamin supplementation as a function of sport discipline is of fundamental importance. Methods: This narrative review synthesizes research findings from the past decade, supplemented with earlier studies where necessary, focusing on vitamins A, C, D, E, and the B-complex vitamins. P

This review outlines recent advances in race nutrition support for professional road cycling, emphasizing individualized, context-specific strategies over generic recommendations. Within the past couple of decades, there have been several changes in nutritional demands and practices within road cycling including (1) a change in the distribution of intensity across a stage or 1-day race; (2) an increase in "on-bike" carbohydrate intake coinciding with integrated "training the gut" practices; and (3) better maintenance of neutral energy balance across stage races. Specifically, race tactics now,

Maintaining adequate energy availability is a key concern for many cyclists, many of whom must balance the need to support their very high training and competition energy expenditure while simultaneously adopting nutritional strategies that will allow them to maintain the body mass deemed most conducive to optimal performance. Available evidence indicates that cyclists tend to be a weight-conscious group that frequently reports engaging in restrictive eating behaviors. Together, the dual demands of supporting the energetic cost of their training alongside restricting energy intake to maintain
