Demographic changes in US trampoline-related injuries from 1998 to 2017: cause for alarm.

BACKGROUND: Recreational sports facilities with trampolines have become increasingly popular, and trampoline-related injuries incurred have been increasing. The goal of this study was to determine impact of recreational sports facilities on trampoline-associated injuries. METHODS: An epidemiological study was performed using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). All patients in the NEISS database coded for trampoline injury were included. Statistical analyses were performed comparing home trampoline injuries (HTIs) and recreational sports facilities-related tra

Policies to promote the community use of schools: a review of state recreational user statutes.

CONTEXT: Concern over liability is a barrier to allowing community use of school property for the purpose of engaging in active sport and recreational activities. Recreational user statutes have the potential to limit liability for public schools when use occurs outside of regular school hours, reduce the fear of liability among school administrators, and increase opportunities for access to school facilities for recreation and physical activity by community members. The purpose of this study was to examine the applicability of recreational user statutes to public schools when the use of schoo

Sports facilities as substitutes for exercise-induced well-being: Evidence from four-wave CFPS panel data.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between sports participation and psychological well-being is well-documented, yet empirical evidence regarding the moderating role of community sports facilities remains inconclusive. This study tests whether facilities amplify or attenuate the well-being returns to exercise, using four-wave panel data from China (CFPS 2014, 2018, 2020, 2022). METHODS: Linear regression models with individual fixed effects were constructed using China Family Panel Studies data (CFPS 2014, 2018, 2020, and 2022; the 2016 wave was excluded because its happiness item reached only 2.5%

Recreational Physical Activity Experiences Among Guatemalan Families With Children With Visual Impairments.

BACKGROUND: Nationwide research indicates that children with visual impairment have limited participation in recreational and sport activities than their peers. This is due in part to the lack of recreational opportunities and facilities, as well as a lack of awareness by parents of how and where their children can participate. The purpose of the current study was to explore the experiences of Latino families of children with visual impairments living in Guatemala regarding physical recreation. Participants were Latino parents (N = 13) who have children with visual impairments recruited from a

Neighborhood Hostility is Associated With the Relationship Between Park Proximity and Physical Activity Among Youth: National Evidence From Chile.

PURPOSE: Physical inactivity among youth is highly prevalent worldwide. Although proximity to parks and recreational facilities is generally associated with higher physical activity (PA), unsafe or hostile neighborhood environments may limit their use. This study examined whether neighborhood hostility moderates the association between access to recreational facilities and adherence to World Health Organization PA guidelines among Chilean youth. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2024 National Physical Activity and Sport Survey of Chile, including 3,477 urban participa

Characterization of the Patient Population in a Sports Medicine Facility.

In brief: This article presents a statistical portrait of the injuries seen over a five-year period at a large sports medicine facility that serves primarily recreational athletes. About half of the 10,271 injuries treated were caused by overuse. Overuse problems exceeded acute injuries in running, tennis, figure skating, and aerobic dance, while acute injuries were more common in skiing, basketball, football, and soccer. The knee was the anatomic area most often injured in all of the major sports. The prevalence of overuse injuries indicates the importance of instructing patients in preventio

[CLAVICLE FRACTURES IN CHILDREN--CIRCUMSTANCES AND CAUSES OF INJURY].

Clavicle fractures in children occur twice as often as in adults. During a child's growth period they account for 10-15% of all fractures sustained. The questions which should be asked are how these fractures are sustained and under which circumstances are the children injured. In the study 256 children with clavicle fractures treated during the period 2008-2013 were analyzed. The underlying cause and place of injuries were classified using the ICD-10 classification system, using environmental causes of injury. The circumstances were in each case accidental injury. Environmental causes were tr

Seasonal and spatial variation in Toxoplasma gondii contamination in soil in urban public spaces in California, United States.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite that can have severe implications for human health. Acutely infected cats shed environmentally resistant T. gondii oocysts in their faeces that contaminate soil, and soil can serve as a reservoir of infection for humans. Free-roaming domestic cats are thought to play an important role in environmental contamination with T. gondii, but few studies have directly measured the direct contribution of free-roaming cats to T. gondii in soil. METHODS: Our goals were to determine whether T. gondii soil contamination occurs in public areas with free-

Weighing up the risks and benefits of community gambling venues as recreational spaces for people with lifelong disability.

BACKGROUND: Community gambling venues (pubs and clubs) are commonly associated with leisure and recreational options in Australian communities. While these venues offer a range of activities and facilities, including social opportunities, sporting facilities, live entertainment, they also contain gambling products that are known to cause significant harm to individuals, their families and communities. Although researchers have explored how adults and children engage with these venues, there is limited understanding about the potential risks and benefits of these venues for people with lifelong

Access to recreational physical activities by car and bus: an assessment of socio-spatial inequalities in mainland Scotland.

Obesity and other chronic conditions linked with low levels of physical activity (PA) are associated with deprivation. One reason for this could be that it is more difficult for low-income groups to access recreational PA facilities such as swimming pools and sports centres than high-income groups. In this paper, we explore the distribution of access to PA facilities by car and bus across mainland Scotland by income deprivation at datazone level. GIS car and bus networks were created to determine the number of PA facilities accessible within travel times of 10, 20 and 30 minutes. Multilevel ne

Pattern recognition and spatial differentiation of built environment around urban sports facilities from perspective of facility hierarchy: a case study of Changsha city.

Under the context of healthy city development and the construction of 15-min life circles, the relationship between the built environment and residents' physical activity and health has attracted increasing attention. However, most existing studies adopt a residential-centered perspective, neglect the heterogeneity of service ranges across different levels of sports facilities, and insufficiently integrate objective built-environment characteristics with residents' facility-use behaviors and subjective perceptions. Taking Changsha city as a case study, this paper develops a hierarchical sports

Longitudinal Analysis of Shared Use of School Physical Activity Facilities in 4 Low-Income Cities in New Jersey From 2010 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: US physical activity (PA) guidelines promote community-level initiatives like shared use of recreational facilities to support PA. "Shared use" occurs when entities, like schools, allow community access to their facilities. Despite its benefits, comprehensive data tracking prevalence of these initiatives over time is lacking. This study examines the trends of shared use of PA facilities in public schools in 4 New Jersey cities between 2010 and 2020 and the school-level factors associated with it. METHODS: Data on community access to school indoor and outdoor PA facilities were col
