Women Managing Heart Disease: Involvement of Spouse and Non-Spouse Care Partners.

Purpose: Heart health is integral to promoting women's overall health and healthcare. Following a cardiac event, engagement in recommended health-related activities (e.g., maintaining a healthy diet) speeds recovery and improves health. We investigate women's perception of care partners who are involved in helping manage their heart disease. Methods: Data were drawn from two pilot studies (N = 54); interviews with women from hospital-based outpatient cardiac rehabilitation centers (study one), and online surveys completed by women with heart disease (study two). We compared women's reports of

Military Spouses' Physical Activity and Flourishing.

INTRODUCTION: Military spouses' health and well-being are pivotal to a healthy and strong United States military force; therefore, elucidating factors that contribute to spouses' health and well-being is important. Prior research has suggested that military spouses may engage in adequate physical activity for physical health; however, it is unknown how spouses' physical activity may benefit their lives in other ways, especially in light of the military context. Flourishing is a condition in which all parts of life are going well, indicating a more overall assessment of health and well-being. T

Spouses as adjuncts in fluency therapy.

Couples with one partner who stutters completed questionnaires about the fluent partners' awareness of their spouses' stuttering; their general knowledge about stuttering; how fluent spouses had helped their partners; and the nature and benefits of spousal participation in therapy. Findings strongly suggested that spouses may be helpful in therapy. Considerations and suggestions for involving spouses are made on the basis of these findings and those of surveys completed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who include spouses in fluency therapy.

Adult T-cell leukemia in spouses.

A married couple who developed adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is described. The husband presented with acute ATL and died soon after admission in spite of aggressive chemotherapy, and his wife, who is diagnosed as smoldering ATL, has been followed in the out-patient clinic. The couple had serum antibodies against human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) and the monoclonal integration of HTLV-I proviral DNA in their lymphocytes. The patients described represent the first reported example of ATL in a married couple.

[Specific features of spouse alcoholism].

The paper aims at specifying the update topology of spouse alcoholism. The results of the study, including 85 alcohol addict couples (both husband and wife), show that spouse alcoholism can be divided into the following types in relation to the initial time of alcohol abuse: the early type when both mates had already developed alcohol drinking behavior before the marriage and genuine late type, when alcohol addiction was formed after the marriage. The genuine spouse alcoholism can be further subdivided into depressive, neurotic and codependent types. It can be noted that prognosis of spouse al

The spouse as a donor in renal transplants.

TMost renal transplants performed in India are from live related donors. The mother is the most frequent donor. In India, the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, which was passed in 1994, allowed organ procurement from "near relatives" live donors. In the period between 1999 and 2003 we performed in our center 41 spouse to spouse transplants, and 356 transplants among the live genetically related. The two groups showed comparable mean creatinine at one (136 +/- 38 mumol/L vs. 151 +/- 53 mumol/L) and three years (136 +/- 41 mumol/L vs. 154 +/- 53 mumol/L). The spouse allograft recipients had 2

Spouse-aided therapy with agoraphobics.

Sixty agoraphobics were treated by behavioural therapy (self-exposure in vivo) either with their partner involved in all aspects of treatment or without their partner. The two treatment formats were about equally effective. Behavioural treatment directed at the agoraphobia resulted in improvement irrespective of marital quality and partner involvement in the therapy. The effects of treatment led neither to a deterioration of the marriage nor to adjustment problems in the partner. Avoidance behaviour, intropunitivity and overprotection were found to predict treatment response. The partners of a

Spouses Speak Up: The Impact of Mesh Sling Complications on the Patient's Spouse-A Qualitative Analysis Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the perspectives, attitudes, and beliefs of the spouses of women with complications of mesh midurethral sling (MUS) surgery with the goal of increasing our understanding of the multidimensional nature of MUS surgery complications. METHODS: After IRB approval, the spouses of patients who underwent surgery for MUS complications at a single tertiary care institution participated in qualitative interviews. Using an interview guide with standardized prompts, semistructured interviews were conducted. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and reviewed line-by-line by two researc

Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration Among Military Spouses.

Military spouses are an understudied population with respect to intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. Due to the unique demands of service members' jobs, military couples are documented to experience particular individual, couple, and family-level risk factors that may lead to IPV perpetration. Using the frustration-aggression hypothesis and considering the possibility of mutual violence, we examined (a) the direct effects of stressful events, marital discord, and work-family conflict on IPV perpetration among military spouses and (b) the indirect effect of anger arousal between stress

Group therapy for spouses of aphasic patients.

The setting, course, and results of a counseling and a therapeutic group for relatives of chronic aphasic patients are reviewed. Generally, providing and discussing information on the illness, its consequences, and medical and social services are greatly appreciated by group members. Counseling and group psychotherapy, as conducted by us, did not result in measurable improvements of relatives' perceptions of personal, social, and familial burdens. We assume, however, that group therapy does lead to more realistic attitudes toward burdensome and severely straining situations and may help with c

Can spouses provide knowledge of each other's communication patterns? A study of self-reports, spouses' reports, and observational coding.

The purposes of this study were (1) to assess individuals' self-reports of communication and their reports about their spouses' communication in order to examine the congruence of spousal views and (2) to investigate whether each report provided unique information about observed marital interactions. These associations were evaluated in a sample of 119 longtime married couples. The Verbal Aggression and Cooperation subscales from the Conflicts and Problem-Solving Scales were used as measures of negative and positive aspects of communication. The findings indicated that self-reports of both ver

[A man's role in recurrent miscarriage in a spouse].

In a review article based on the published literature and their own research, the authors examine the role of a man in recurrent miscarriage and reproductive losses in a spouse. Detailed description is presented of the negative impact of elevated levels of sperm DNA fragmentation on the course of pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, on the occurrence of recurrent miscarriage or missed abortion, on the effectiveness of assisted reproductive technology (ART) programs. The etiology and pathogenesis of damage to sperm DNA are described. Outlined are positive effects of correcting adve

The case for treating depression in military spouses.

The increased operational tempo associated with current deployments to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) is placing considerable strain on military families. Among other sequelae of OIF and OEF deployment, findings from recent studies suggest high rates of depression in spouses of service members. This review presents a rationale for targeting depression among military spouses. It examines how stressors relating to the deployment cycle may contribute to depression in spouses and outlines the effects of spousal depression on the mental health of service members

The spouse as a kidney donor: ethically sound?

A shortage of cadaver donor organs requires transplant units to examine all possible alternatives. Transplantation from living donors accounts for only approximately 10% of kidney transplants in the UK. Recent studies have shown that the results of kidney transplantation between spouses are at least as good as those of well-matched cadaver organs, but very few transplants of this type have been performed in this country so far. As part of the assessment process, the proposed donor and recipient are required to provide written statements about the issues. We reproduce here the personal statemen

Huntington's chorea. Its impact on the spouse.

Huntington's chorea imposes a direct imprint on the life of the spouse of the affected patient. Interviews with 15 wives of patients with Huntington's chorea revealed that none of them knew prior to marriage of the presence of a heritable disease within the husband's family. When informed of the diagnosis, the wife reacted with disbelief and denial. As she became aware of the steady progression of the disease and the threat of transmission to her children, her response changed to resentment and hostility. The disease permeated the entire life of the unaffected spouse: her life style, family re
