Journal of nursing staff development : JNSD1991eng
This program evaluation assessed whether nursing staff who took a mandatory physical assessment course were using the information in their daily practice. A questionnaire designed to assess clinical usage of 17 physical assessment skills was sent to the nurses who completed the first four classes of the assessment course. The results showed that the majority of the nurses used only nine of the 17 skills on a daily basis. Skills used most frequently were mental status and skin system assessments. The skills reported as least used were assessments for extraocular movements, cranial nerves, and j

Safewards is a nursing model of care designed for acute mental health inpatient units. Since inception, the model has gained popularity in many countries and has been implemented in settings other than mental health. A version for bed-based mental health units within prisons has also been developed to assist nurses working in this complex setting called Safewards Secure-Custodial Mental Health. A previous study identified that modifiers (things staff can do to prevent conflict and containment) were needed for custodial staff to finalise the prison model. The aim of this study was to develop cu

For patients with indwelling catheters, even with current standards of care and evidence-based practice, urinary tract infections continue to be a problem. Data were gathered on urinary catheter usage in a large, rural acute care hospital, and outcomes profiles were developed (including mortality, morbidity, length of stay, and costs). An innovative poster and video approach focusing on alternatives to urinary catheterization, early discontinuance of catheters, and proper insertion and care techniques were used to educate nursing staff and improve outcomes.

One approach to minimizing the negative consequences of excessive gambling is staff training to reduce the rate of the development of new cases of harm or disorder within their customers. The primary goal of the present study was to assess suitable benchmark criteria for the training of gambling employees at casinos and lottery retailers. The study utilised the Delphi Method, a survey with one qualitative and two quantitative phases. A total of 21 invited international experts in the responsible gambling field participated in all three phases. A total of 75 performance indicators were outlined

We suggest that the most fundamental change in staff development that must occur is recognition of the need for a professional belief system as the basis for any pharmaceutical care activity. Values derived from fundamental moral ideals and professional beliefs foster the development of attitudes and behaviors. It would be wrong to suggest or imply that such a change need only occur in postbaccalaureate training. The development of personal and professional value systems in existing primary professional training programs is inadequate--we do not yet do enough to develop people before they ente

BACKGROUND: Evaluating healthcare interventions in clinical trials requires a skilled workforce. However, the demands of developing and running clinical trials make recruiting and retaining staff challenging. Flourishing, which focuses on positive aspects of well-being, may help staff manage these demands. This study introduces the Flourishing As Clinical Trial Staff (FACTS) guidance, offering practical strategies to support staff working in UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) Clinical Trials Units (CTUs), to thrive at work.
METHODS: Building upon findings from a national survey of sta

The COVID-19 pandemic created an urgent need for staff development. However, COVID-19 has created many challenges, including the inability to meet in-person, travel restrictions to conferences, overwhelming clinical demands on already overextended faculty members and the increased need to focus on personal health and safety. Although current challenges were immediately met with solutions borne out of an emergency, questions remain on how to identify and sustain best practices and further evolve staff development beyond the immediate crisis. Reviewing the Medical Adaptations series revealed sev

The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the Russian healthcare in terms of the pace and quality of digitalization lags behind the healthcare systems of other developed and developing countries. The low level of digital literacy of medical staff does not allow them to develop the proper level of competencies for working with high-tech equipment, software applications and various telemedicine services. This, in turn, reduces both the quality and efficiency of medical care for the population. The purpose of the article is to develop a profile of digital competence of medical staff. The

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, the number of SARS-CoV-2 infections is increasing. Serological immunoglobulin tests may help to better understand the development of immune mechanisms against SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19 cases and exposed but asymptomatic individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate exposure to SARS-CoV-2, symptoms, and antibody responses in a large sample of healthcare workers following a COVID-19 outbreak.
METHODS: A COVID-19 outbreak among staff members of a major German children's and women's hospital was followed by massive RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 tests and provided the opportunity t

INTRODUCTION: Emergency department overcrowding contributes to prolonged wait times, increased mortality, and staff burnout. The vertical flow model was developed to improve patient flow and has demonstrated reductions in length of stay, door-to-provider time, and rates of patients who leave without being seen. Although it is adaptable to different emergency department settings, implementation has primarily occurred in large, urban hospitals. This project aimed to develop a staff-led policy for a modified vertical flow model tailored to a small, rural emergency department.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adaptations of a playground, and subsequently staff development, on the participation of a 3-year-old boy with congenital blindness. A single-subject design with three conditions (baseline, adaptations of the playground, and staff development) was used. The playground adaptation involved adding musical stations in strategic locations on the playground and connecting them with a "path" that provided auditory feedback. The staff training involved the music therapist providing individualized instruction to the staff who supervised the child. The child

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to develop a comprehensive system of hand hygiene (HH) indicators for environmental services (EVS) staff in medical institutions, thereby providing clear guidelines on the appropriate moments for EVS staff to perform HH, offering monitoring and feedback metrics for their HH practices, and utilizing the collected monitoring data to evaluate the effectiveness of these practices and serve as a basis for implementing improvement measures.
METHODS: We conducted non-participant observations to document the workflows of EVS staff across 38 clinical departments within a single

Background: Oncology and palliative care staff frequently encounter death yet often lack structured opportunities for reflection following these experiences. Objectives: This study asked: How can we develop and implement a reflective practice program for oncology and palliative care staff to support them with patient death? Reflective practice is recognized as a valuable tool to support staff well-being; however, there is limited literature describing how such interventions are implemented in the hospital setting. Methods: A participatory insider-action research approach was undertaken to codeve

BACKGROUND: Contractures are a debilitating problem for individuals living in long-term care settings. However, there is a lack of education and training among the care staff regarding the identification of risk factors related to contractures and the preventive strategies that can decrease their development or progression. Addressing this knowledge gap has the potential to improve the quality of care provided to residents in care homes. The objective of this quality improvement (QI) project was to investigate the impact of a newly developed educational video on the awareness, knowledge and und

The aims of this study were: (I) to identify all adults with learning disabilities living in residential homes or attending day services in the Cambridge Health District in contact with the criminal justice system during 1992; (2) to evaluate the responses of services involved; and (3) to investigate the attitudes of staff and the policies of the services to 'offending behaviour'. Details of offences committed and the response of the police, health and social services, and other agencies were obtained by direct interview with the senior staff and through examination of case records. The cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) is a highly specialized procedural environment that requires an effective orientation process for nurses and radiology technologists. Leaders at a health care network identified the need for a standardized CCL orientation program when high turnover rates and staff shortages created a need to hire nurses and radiology technologists with no CCL work history. A group of CCL leaders and perioperative educators collaborated to create and implement a network-wide CCL orientation program. The program is an instructor-led course conducted over three eight-h
